Tom Selleck on "Blue Bloods" and his memoir, "You Never Know"

- The hit CBS drama "Blue Bloods" is set to end this year, but there's been pushback on that, most notably from star Tom Selleck, who over 14 seasons has played the head of the NYPD (and the head of a very headstrong family). He talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about his desire to continue "Blue Bloods"; about his pioneering '80s crime show "Magnum, P.I.," which put him on the map (and which kept him from playing Indiana Jones); and how he got Frank Sinatra his last acting gig.

CBS would be crazy to cancel Blue Bloods. It’s one of the best shows on the air if not THE best!
I totally agree, Tom Selleck, the best show on CBS Blue Bloods should not end. Stand your ground and know fans are with you!❤
too catholic.
Needs to keep going
@@TheresaPowersexactly what does their religion have to do with the show , nothing
Agreed. The best show on TV and now, after all this time, like family! LOL
Agreed. Needs to keep going. One of the BEST shows on TV hands down. A gentleman and class act all around. TV royalty with him.
And we'd love to see you keep working Tom Selleck.
He is a first class professional and a damn fine individual. While I do not know him personally he is one of those individuals whose character and integrity come thru no matter what part he is playing. Rare breed.
I couldn't have said it any better myself . I absolutely love the guy
He looks great, but he is feeble as seen here when walking.....loved MPI.....
Except for supporting a reverse mortgage scam targeting the elderly.
79 😮 wow he's still so good looking.
Please don’t end this show!!!! Best on TV plus I have always been the biggest Tom Selleck fan ever!!!!
Mr. Selleck will always be the gorgeous, loveable Thomas Magnum to my (then) teenage heart.......
Selleck is a class act in a business where that is very rare.
Jesse Stone is my go to series of movies when Im in a crap mood and need a friend. Love Tom Selleck❤ Thanks Chief
Mine, too. Love those movies. I know of 2 of them. Were there more?
@@janliljegren9524 I think there is 9 all together. I have them all. 🤎
Yes there are NINE of them. 💞
@@valerienorman6051 Wow, Im going to have to go hunting. Thanks for your response
I watched all of them. Wish they had made more. He was kind of brooding but I liked him.
He's been blessed with 2 good shows with great storylines --Magnum PI & Blue Bloods. Lucky man!
Don’t forget Jesse Stone.
@@isobellickes8543 My Mom who passed 2 years ago loved BB..........I would never watch it with her due to being a real cop for 24 years....I feel a little guilty about that, but not too much...whenever I was with her I would always watch other shows with her in the evening, just not BB due to it being another bogus police show.....Love You Mom...
@@isobellickes8543 and Quigley Down Under 🙂
Loved him as Jesse Stone. Still watch those episodes today.
Tom Selleck is a national treasure, and Blue Bloods is the only show left on tv worth watching. You do this, CBS, and we are going to make sure you feel the pain of such a cowardly decision.
Network tV is terrible, they take the quality shows off the air and leave the crap. Let's hope CBS has some sense.
National treasure? For what? Reverse mortgages.
@@flyingthesails6801Seleck brings 60 years of experience to a network owning Friday night’s ratings
@@talkingrock7011 If Tom Seleck "owning Friday night's" impresses you, so be it. You still cannot deny the fact that hundreds of elderly people signed away their homes because they believed in and trusted him.
Fans of the post-apocalyptic CBS drama Jericho bombarded CBS headquarters with shipments of peanuts until the network agreed to make a second season. (One of the final lines of the season one finale was "Nuts!")
I hope "Blue Bloods" will go on! It's one of the best shows on TV.
Blue Bloods is probably the only show I watch regularly
The fans want the show to be renewed!!!!
Save Blue Bloods
Tom is great in the Jesse Stone series. My husband and I have watched Blue Bloods from day one.
Same for my wife and I also
I hate that they didn't do more of those. A very good series.
Love the Jesse Stone movies. They should definitely do more. Blue Bloods is tops!
@@MSDOGS1976 How many were there? I only know of 2
He was great in the Las Vegas series, too.
My favorite Tom Selleck movie is Quigley Down Under ... I am just in awe and a huge fan of Selleck!!
For me it's a toss-up between Quigley Down Under and The Sacketts.
Our Family watches and loves Blue Bloods. We hope CBS changes their mind.
Blue bloods is so good why cancel a great show. He's 79 and still has a strong work ethic how great. Do you hear that our lazy younger generation?
That's telling them. If it was up to the suits they would say" Dude you are too old retire".
"Lazy younger generation" - derogatory term used by old cranks to describe the young since the beginning of time.
But alas, we live in modern times with modern social safety nets. You might want to remember who goes to work to fund your Social Security payments before you call them "lazy".
On of my 80’s crushes 😊
Became a fan when he first stared in Magnum PI.been one ever since. great actor, level headed and humble. like everyone else on this pageI hope CBS wakes up and keeps Blue Bloods going . been a fan of that since its start still the one program we look forward to each week and watch the re-runs Ad- nauseum! WAKE UP CBS!! YOU'RE SCREWING IT UP!!ECF
Im 55 and Blue bloods is the only network show that I watch. I love to watch these characters act and their not making anymore Tom Shelleck's so enjoy season 14.
My 9th grade social studies teacher on Oahu was one of his stuntmen on Magnum. What a trip.
Damn, Magnum PI is almost 80 years old. Jeez, Im getting up there as well! Ugh. I was a big fan of the Magnum back in the early 1980's. All of us baby boomers are in the fourth quarter of our lives. Where did the time go?!
I dont want Blue Bloods to end......it is my very favorite show and would truly break my heart. I love the whole cast they are like family to me😢😢😢
As a "Blue Bloods" fan since the beginning, I'd like it to keep going!
DO NOT CANCEL BLUE BLOODS! THE best written and superbly-acted American TV series ever. As for Tom Selleck, he is beyond wonderful, humble and gracious. Feet on terra firma. We’re with you, Tom. CBS needs to stay with Blue Bloods!
My mother and I are huge fans of Blue Bloods.
Tom Selleck, you are an amazing actor and man who is well loved by me and so many. I've been watching you since Magnum P.I. when I was little, and I have watched Blue Bloods since the beginning. I stand with you. CBS needs to let Blue Bloods continue!
79? Wow he still is a handsome guy
I can't believe he is 79! He has aged very well.
Looks great but is feeble when walking.....Love him....his face looks better then many people I know in their 50 s
Nice interview. Love Blue Bloods and all the actors. Hope it stays on tv.
And he’s still incredibly handsome.
80 next year.
Remarkable.
My wife meant him years ago during his Magnum PI days. She always says “ He was so nice.” and smiles.😂
People really seem to love Blue Bloods, when what we’re really talking about, is the iconic Tom Selleck, and how he has been in his business for so long, and what he has felt, in his years, as an actor.
79! I can still remember watching him as Magnum way back...
🤩 His shows and many others provide jobs for the crew, writers, etc....good paying jobs! His name is QUALITY! Thank you Tom!
I worked in Wardrobe on a tv movie in 1978 titled "The Gypsy Warriors", with Tom and James Whitmore Jr. Tom was a delight to be around. I remember he and several cast and crew members talking and laughing about that new comic they saw on tv recently named Steve Martin. Just as Tom did I hear Steve Martin went on to have a successful career too! 😂
If Grey’s Anatomy can be renewed for its 21st season, Blue Bloods can go on!
I am a “late bloomer “ my friend told me about it and …OMG, I’m now hooked on “Blue Bloods” I watch the reruns on ION TV every Wednesday..I absolutely luv that show!
Well written, phenomenal actors playing exceptional characters!
I enjoy having Sunday dinner with the Reagans (on Wednesdays) every week. I grew up having Sunday dinners at 1-2 in the afternoon. My parents still do.
“If you put pineapple on pizza, you’re dead to me!”

I agree with you, Detective!🕵️♂️😊
"OMG"... seriously. Over a TV show. You should really go out and get some fresh air.
Love him. He is still very handsome.
He has aged very, very well. 😊
Oh, Mr. Selleck, you are definitely **enough.** What ISN'T "enough" is Blue Bloods!!! Listen up, CBS - ** WE NEED MORE BLUE BLOODS!!!** That is, and has been for 14 years, my favorite show. The wholesome goodness of a family of civil service workers against the violence they all see everyday... there's just no "replacement" for Blue Bloods.
Magnum Pi is my favorite show, I could binge watch it weeks on end.
I’m still mad that the Robins Nest estate got torn down!!! It was a historic property even b4 magnum Pi was filmed on it. Thanks alot Ex President Obama
These tv executives think they know what the viewers want to watch , but they don't know crap. This is the best show on television .
I was one of the many (millions) of drooling women who took one look at the dimples, smile & mustache & was smitten, I’m still one of the millions who appreciate “the work” he’s done over many years. Can’t imagine why CBS wants to shoot themselves in the foot by cancelling, because it’s the rare show that has beloved characters, wonderful & topical writing & a talent crew that pulls it off!
Remember he had the best legs in a pair of shorts
It was those legs…❤
Great story, Tom Selleck´s humility and dedication truly inspirational.
Hey CBS, don't end something that's bringing in money to your network! Blue Bloods is the best show on TV...keep it going! Been a fan since it all began! Mr. Selleck, you are absolutely spot on! We would like for you to keep doing it too! Are you listening CBS? 🤔
Love Tom Selleck❤❤ Loved Magnum P.I. I had a huge crush on him when I was little. Those blue eyes and Especially the DIMPLES. Blue Bloods needs to stay.❤
Thank you, CBS, for showcasing this gentleman and his fine work.
Yes! More Blue 💙 Bloods!
Tom Selleck and the whole cast are wonderful and Blue Bloods if it’s coming to the end, I will miss it. I always watch the old episodes all the time I enjoy it and all the other new episodes every Friday night is always nice to watch it all the time.
Long live Tom and Blue Bloods, one of the best and beloved actors and TV shows ever! Just got his book today - I want to help him keep his ranch! ❤❤
I love his Jesse Stone series. Those are excellent.
I met Tom in 1984 at a Beach Volleyball Tournament on Oahu, Hawaii. Best time of my life!
Quigley Down under was his greatest piece of work!
ALAN RICKMAN TOO

1980 to present.
I loved Tom in Magnum and the whole cast. He chose a full time gig and it was filmed in Hawaii! He chose wisely! Blue Bloods is a great show too...
The only and best Magnum PI..."Did You See The Sunrise " was one of the best and poignant magnum episodes
Please, please - keep blue bloods on CBS - love the show - watched every episode - it shows the "good side" of police. . . . I stand with Tom Selleck - keep in on!!!!
Tom is a legend. He’s had a long and amazing career. Even at 79, he looks great and looks to be in good health.
Great segment! Enjoyed the clips from days gone by. The Frank Sinatra guest appearance in Magnum, PI had been long forgotten, but amazing. Hope that CBS Programming wakes up!
I’m a big Tom Selleck fan, I want to get his book. Don’t forget his character on the Rockford Files, Lance White, “Don’t worry Jim, it’s just a flesh wound.”
Lance White (who a reincarnation of sorts of Waco Williams from Maverick) is my all-time favorite PI. Everybody knows a Lance White or two. Not a clue about how the world works, but good things keep dropping in their lap. It would be easy to overplay a character like that, but Selleck really nailed it.
Good call. 'The Saga of Waco Williams' was one of my favorite Maverick episodes. Very similar character to Lance White on Rockford.
James Garner was probably my favorite actor on television. Selleck a close runner-up.
Same here im a huge Rockford Files fan Lance White in the big red cadillac

No way CBS lets this show go. Still a top rated show, wins its time slot and all the stars still want to do it. It will be back!!
Such an honorable man.
Enjoyed him in most of his movies/TV shows... especially 'Blue Bloods''

The work ethic is strong in our older population. Love that Tom is still among those pushing ahead. But a bit disheartening that he feels after his long work history, if he wants to continue living on his ranch he must continue to work.
He's so humble and honest. Cannot wait to read his book!
Except supporting a reverse mortgage that target the elderly.
I think guest star Blue Bloods is Carol Burnett put Tom Selleck together like remember again would great. 😊😊😊😊
Now that us an episode I would watch.
Selleck is one of few the Hollywood actors that knows to keep his mouth shut regarding social issues. He may be the most liberal guy in town, or he may be ultra conservative. Either way, because he doesn't run off at the mouth, his popularity has spanned a very long and interesting career. Love watching him "at work". Always makes me believe the character is real.
If you have a platform, use it.
Brings back good memories, Magnum P.I.!! Amazing how much time passes. Good memories!
Born in Michigan, longtime TS fan. Age is NO factor. TY Tom for years of enjoyment.
You are the best Tom. Can someone please give this man the Medal of Freedom?
Need Blue Bloods Season 15 and more!! 💙 It's one of the best stories on television. Love Blue Bloods 💙
I was a huge Magnum PI fan as a kid & even joined the Tom Selleck fan club for a time. Love Blue Bloods and hope it continues. Got his book for my birthday Tuesday & look forward to reading it. He’s a great actor & looking forward to whatever he does.
Tom is one of the Best... and Blue Bloods is Proof
“I am enough” is probably the most powerful words you can ever say to yourself.
The first time I saw Tom Selleck on film was 1978 in the movie Coma...
Another Jesse Stone movie, Please!
I second that absolutely 💯
Tom Selleck is a tv icon.
In 1986.87 I’d come home from work and watch his show I was 16 and working at kfc
The "Jesse Stone" Series was his best !!!!
I couldn’t help but think that maybe a reverse mortgage could help keep Tom on his huge ranch if he becomes unemployed. No disrespect intended.
Exactly right
I'm a little surprised you didn't mention his recurrent role as the fallible Jesse Stone. He brought a lot of vulnerability to that role, especially when contrasted with his totally convincing portrayal of General Dwight D. Eisenhower
I, too, hope that BLUE BLOODS comes back for a fifteenth season. Have loved that show from day one, and even have them all on DVD.
Bluebloods is my favorite show. i hope it continues 💙
One of the best ever 👊 .. Ahhh Magnum is quintessential 80s, definitely one of my favorites growing up ✌️

"Blue Bloods" always reminded me of my family growing up and the conversations we had together at the dinner table. That segment of the show always felt like HOME to me. One of the best lines I recall from several seasons ago was when Commissioner Reagan was speaking to a mobster in the hospital. The mobster wasn't at all liking or respecting Mr. Selleck's character and gruffly said something like, "I don't have anything more to say to you, Reagan!" And the response was, "Oh, come on; call me by my first name - Commissioner!" I laughed so much I missed the next couple lines of conversation. The stories, the characters, the HEART of the show is always appreciated.
Tom looks wonderful . Amazing.
I love ❤️ watching Blue bloods.
