  • In today's video I show you how to change a steering wheel on a boat and convert your 3/4" tapered shaft to a 5 or 6 bolt steering wheel. It's very common for steering wheels and steering wheel hubs to get stuck on the tapered shaft, so I'll show you my handy little trick for unsticking the wheel and how you can replace your boat wheel with any version you want! The best part is, the entire install takes a whole 5 minutes and it's an easy to way to give your boat a facelift. You can find steering wheels for all kinds of different budgets, there's no need to spend a fortune.
    My 2006 Princecraft boat had an old Teleflex style steering wheel and I've wanted to change it out for a couple of years now. I think the new version looks AMAZING with the blue lights and carpet of the hope, hope you like it too!
    For this install, I used the following 2 key pieces:
    ✅ 6 Bolt Blue and Black Steering Wheel: amzn.to/3ujp7kL
    ✅ Forever Sharp Boat Steering Wheel Hub Adapter in (3/4" tapered to 5 or 6 Bolt): amzn.to/3btjjwm
    ✅ Hub Adapter Chrome version: amzn.to/3kal8m3
    ✅ Steering Wheel still stuck? You might need a wheel puller: amzn.to/2NMU5B7
    I really hope this how-to video is super helpful to anyone looking to change out their boat steering wheel or want to convert from a 3/4" tapered shaft to a 5 or 6 bolt wheel, and of course post your feedback or questions in the comments below and I'll respond as soon as I can. If you found this video valuable, please be sure to like and subscribe :)

    A little bit of bling bling never hurt right? Hope you guys like the steering wheel swap, it's super easy to do! A big thank you to Trevor Jordan who commented to let me know the "key thingy" that goes in the tapered shaft to lock the steering wheel when turning is called a Woodruff Key. One of the best things about doing these how-to videos is that I also get to learn from my audience and that's just awesome to me :) Thanks everyone for your support and comments!

    My first bass boat, I had to change the cable and everything. Well, I didn't test it in the driveway. When my buddy and I took it out, we soon realised that I had put the steering box in backwards. It was an amusing day of fishing. And so much fun loading it on the trailer at the end of the day...lol

    Important tip, screw the nut off further so that it stick up higher than the shaft. That way when you hit it with a hammer, you don't damage the threads on the shaft. That's the main reason to leave the nut on at all.

    That is a nice steering wheel and the blue goes with the lights that you installed!! Nice!! Yea those woodruff keys and be fun sometimes, I have done my work on off road MX bikes and they can be tricky to keep in place because of the flywheel magnet that likes to unseat these. Great choice for the color of the steering wheel adapter, chrome is nice but it is a pain to keep clean! Thanks for sharing and hope to see you out on the water catching some nice fish soon! :)

      Thaks so much Eric, really appreciate the kind words! I'm happy I went with black as well, I don't really have any chrome on the boat minus the two rear cleats so I figured the back would match better. Next video is a fishing video, I promise! :)

    Thanks for the video! I will be doing this to my boat as well. Quick question do you have any videos and/or know where to get the parts to replace a sun damaged gauge cluster/dash specifically on a 2012 Bayliner 185BR?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  Před 2 lety

      You're very welcome and yeah, it's a great little upgrade that looks so good! Unfortunately I do not know where to find those parts, you're honestly going to have to google search and dig around on eBay and stuff like that and try and find boat part recycling places. It's really tough to find parts for older boats I've noticed although yours is only 10 years old. I've tried a couple of times to find parts for my 2006 and it's been impossible. Good luck to you!

    Tip back the nut off until it is flush with the top of the threaded shaft. This will prevent damage to the threads of both the shaft and nut. Usually wood will absorb too much of the shock to be very effective.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  Před 2 lety

      Great tip Charles thanks! Yeah I think wood will just bite in too much and absorb the shock as you said.

      @@HodoukenYT if you have the same kind of tapered shaft that I have on my boat you have no choice but to buy the adapter. There's nothing on the steering wheel for that tapered shaft to grab onto so it would be useless. You also don't want to take any shortcuts when it comes to your steering system. A steering failure at a high rate of speed can result in a serious or even fatal accident.

  • @Backtanner
    @Backtanner Před 2 lety

    Back the center nut off and hit that not the shaft. You'll damage the threads on the shaft if you hammer it.
