  • Replacing your boat steering wheel but it's stuck & won't budge? We had to replace our boat steering wheel with a new one because the original wheel was falling apart after 20 years on our 2002 410 Sea Ray Sundancer boat... it was SO stuck and almost impossible to remove! Captain Brian shows how we tried 2 different ways to remove the steering wheel - pulling from behind while hitting it and using a gear puller tool (which was technique that worked for us). After removing it we were able to easily replace it with a new boat steering wheel with a cool control knob.

Another trick is to use a plastic fallers wedge. I just took my Teleflex steering wheel off a 1987 Crestliner. Sprayed the bolt with PB Blaster, tapped the wedge in between the collar and the steering wheel so it was good and tight that gave the bolt (put the nut on flush with the top of the bolt to protect the threads) a couple raps with the hammer and off she popped.

Great thanks for sharing! Sounds like it has a similar effect as the puller.

Gear puller from Harbor Freight for $24.95 - my 1998 Sea Ray Steering Wheel wasn’t coming off and this was only thing that worked

yep, right tool for the right job! the one we used & linked below was about same price - even if only used once, if it works its worth it!

I should have watched this before doing mine. I did get mine off and violence was the answer! Lol

Ha!! Yeah there were a few choice words uttered before we finally got our wheel off too!

But……….we (most who clicked on this vid) already tried the puller too…thought this was a saving grace to avoid taking the boat to the shop where it’ll sit for a month or more and accrue massive charges to take the steering wheel off thus missing great fall fishing….😒… oh well…thanks anyway…😏

Maybe try again with a different grip on it? Our wheel was SUPER stuck and had to figure out right grip of the puller to finally get it off. The hammer technique some swear by in other videos didn’t work for us. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, the puller does not work well with plastic.

We had a difficult time getting a good grip at first too, maybe some tape on it or something could help?

    seems to be mechanically challenged

Well the steering wheel was challenging but otherwise we’re good with all our mechanical work 😊
