Phillip K Dick Sci Fi Audiobook Full Length
Today on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… The first of two back-to-back episodes written by Philip K. Dick. The theme of “the man who played God” has been used many ways in many stories, but never with more tense and chilling effect than in this tight little yarn by the very able Mr. Dick. You’ll like it, we’re sure. Small Town by Philip K. Dick, that’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.
Small Town is one of 16 short stories in a collection from legendary author Philip K. Dick which appeared in science fiction magazines from 1952 to 1955. The Philip K. Dick Collection is on sale now on many audiobook websites, but you can get this 10 hour 11 minute audiobook for only $7.97 when you use the promo code, sale, that’s, sale, lowercase letters only on lostscifi.com.
Small Town first appeared in Amazing Stories magazine in May 1954. You’ll find our story on page 6. Small Town by Philip K. Dick…
Verne Haskel crept miserably up the front steps of his house, his overcoat dragging behind him. He was tired. Tired and discouraged. And his feet ached.
"My God," Madge exclaimed, as he closed the door and peeled off his coat and hat. "You home already?"
Haskel dumped his briefcase and began untying his shoes. His body sagged. His face was drawn and gray.
    "Say something!"
    "Dinner ready?"
"No, dinner isn't ready. What's wrong this time? Another fight with Larson?"
Haskel stumped into the kitchen and filled a glass with warm water and soda. "Let's move," he said.
    "Move?"
"Away from Woodland. To San Francisco. Anywhere." Haskel drank his soda, his middle-aged flabby body supported by the gleaming sink. "I feel lousy. Maybe I ought to see Doc Barnes again. I wish this was Friday and tomorrow was Saturday."
"What do you want for dinner?"
"Nothing. I don't know."... Small Town by Philip K. Dick
Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… The second of two back-to-back episodes written by Philip K. Dick. The hardest part of the "preordained" thesis to grasp is that the thesis itself is part of what must and shall be. Will time travel cause the end of the human race? Or will it allow them to fix the future? Meddler by Philip K. Dick next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.
That’s next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

This story seems like a Twilight Zone episode. In fact, there is an episode called Miniature starring Robert Duvall which is somewhat similar.

@Bill Farley thanks for mentioning that Twilight Zone episode. I found a shortened version of it here on CZcams czcams.com/video/13tSCEc0Pi0/video.html. Very entertaining and I agree with you, it is somewhat similar. Wish I could find the entire episode.

A marvellous story from PKD and brilliantly read! It occurred to me that the protagonist is displaying symptoms of autism or Asperger's Syndrome.

That's wild. I wonder if when this was written, if the model train hobby was already popular. Someone doing this today wouldn't cause any notice.
In all honesty, some years ago I went through some difficult job tasks and other things. I started building models in my spare time just to take my mind off things.
Didn't plan it that way but it was great. After a while I lost interest but things had worked themselves out by then.

@jamesrice6096 great question. At the time the story was written model trains were the most popular toy for boys in the US. Thank you for your comment and for listening!!

I absolutely love PKD, but I have to admit, I really don't get this story. It almost reads like a cathartic release for Mr Dick, but I can't really quite put my finger on what point he was trying to drive home here.
