How To Improve your Turnout / En Dehors | Lazy Dancer Tips

  • In this video I'll show you an effective series of exercises to drastically improve your Turnout or En Dehors. Turn out is the outward rotation of the leg from the hip joint. This is what makes ballet different from any other dance discipline.
Obviously every body is different, you find people with a spectacular and easy rotation and those, like me, who have to work and sweat to achieve a decent turn out and hold it that way.
Either ways we have to work the right muscles, whether for strengthening or for image improvement. We all work with what we've got and 180 degrees turn out is not necessary to be a beautiful artist.
    Have Fun!

Even tho I am whatching this in 2018. These exercises made my turnout go from 120° to 160° after constantly doing the exercises everyday and going to ballet class 5 days a week. It took me 4 weeks to improve my turnout🙂😊❤️❤️

Hello Alessia! This video has been very helpful for working on my turnout. I don't have a very good natural turnout, but your video has really helped. After doing this video every day for 3 days (maybe), I was already seeing a vast improvement. Now, after doing it every day for around 10 days, I see outstanding improvement. Thank you for making this video to help people like me achieve a decent turnout.

Running against time here to try a career in ballet and not sure if all the effort will work, but I will keep trying until the very last moment (I'm 18 and have done ballet my whole life, some things happend and I could only start ballet again seriously at 16). Oh Good on you!! 18 is still a very good time to get into the ballet world, I tell you it won't be easy as you have to work extra hard to catch up but, on the other hand, you have a more mature head and you will understand things much quicker! So everything is in your favour ;) Let me know if there is anything in particular I can help with or any questions! I'll be more than happy to help out and give you suggestions! Thank you for your wonderful exercises. I wish I found you out when I was younger. Never had that great of technical training. I was taught early to really squeeze my butte which became a bad habit and I was not finding my center due to all the stress I placed on doing that. Your exercise when you put your feet up on the chair and raise your hips up and rotate the inner thighs in and out has really helped me find my center. I concentrate on feeling my spine….not squeezing. It's building up my back muscles properly ( core ) and my turnout is really improving properly. TOO BAD I MISSED THE BOAT !

This may sound silly but I had the hardest time as a young dancer how to turn out from the hips! Not that I didn't "know" how but from standing up in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th position I couldn't do it for the life of me, even "tucking under the butt" lol was useless! Finally at about 16 I finally was able to turn out from the hip with my feet on the floor. I had the strength the whole time and had the best flexibility in the school but still I could never get my hips, knees (bent) and ankles flat on the floor when laying on my stomach. The teacher used that as a gauge for our turnouts. At least I looked as if I had a good turnout but as the most Gumbi one in the class that was my "Arch Nemesis" during tech warm up. I could have used this exercise instead of butterflies. Just found your channel. Love it and enjoying old memories while getting in a workout!

    • @lazydancertips
      @lazydancertips  Před 8 lety +5

+Erin S. I'm really glad you enjoyed this, remember it's never too late to go back to what you like and enjoy in life.
By the way Turning out's never been easy for me either, my body doesn't know what it means and still have to work for it and concentrate. It's hard to hear "you don't have a ballerina body" when you perfectly know that dancing it's your vocation... I had to proof everyone wrong! And so I became a ballerina!
The good thing is that When you get older you understand your body and mind much better. Also some teachers are not good for certain students and vice versa, it doesn't necessarily means they are bad, just not good at understanding each other. Some things might work for some people but not for everyone. That's why it's good to work with different people ( not only in dance) to achieve your goal.
I really hope you had a satisfying workout and glad your good old memories came back! Once a dancer, always a dancer ! All my love Alessia

EPIC! I tore my left ankle over a year ago, and am still trying to recover, though it is mostly healed as this workout progressed it became more and more angry/sore - I have been trying to strengthen now for over 6 months with limited success. This workout was d'BOMB; I didn't realize how some of these muscles really need attention - surprisingly obliques and outer thigh muscles complained the most during this workout. I am so glad to have found your feed, and look forward to using them to improve my form, having danced in my younger years, and now do Pilates, yoga, and now barre whenever I can, I love how my body feels with the yoga and barre - thank you again!!! (PS, do you have, or could you do a 30-45 min full-body barre video with cool-down at some point? your instruction style is awesome!)

Hi Nona! Welcome to the Lazy Family ! I'm so happy these exercises helped, I understand what you mean about your ankle getting angry, sometime the position on the chair can be an unhappy one for it. I had an ankle injury myself, funny enough left one too, which was kind of sorted with cortisone injection. I hate needles! Have you tried the ankle/feet exercises video in the list? it would be very good for you czcams.com/video/QMrEz0xssLo/video.html this will keep you busy for a bit, especially in finding the coordination.
I have a couple of Barres out at the moment a mini barre czcams.com/video/9Dsxy2xOtT4/video.html and a full one czcams.com/video/lHg5bxHnvwo/video.html . Let me know how you get on with these, i'll be more than happy to help you out with anything in particular you might need and if you have any questions please ask! Keep going with the great work, yoga and Pilates are great cool downs after barre too! Thank you lots again for your lovely message! keep me updated ! Lots of love Ciao Alessia :)

Nona'sArk myofascial release is the best. It's got me through rotator cuff, calf and ankle pain in many occasion. All you need is deep tissue massage with a tennis ball, "the stick" and a textured foam roller or you can massage along the ankles and sides of legs with the knuckle of your finger and take hydrolysed collagen with hyaluronic Acid to heal quickly. It hurts to do myofascial release initially, but breaks up scar tissue.

Hey! I'm not Alessia, but I study ballet professionally XD
The tip our teacher gives to us while doing this routine, is to really go down vértebra by vértebra. Like really touching the floor with every point of the spine while descending. It's almost like curving the lower back when going down.
Those muscles are working, so they're gonna still feel tired, but that way you are going to feel the work much more in you glutes and hamstrings.
      Hope it helps!

I'd like to add to this by saying icve always been intimidated but bar work because I never had strength, stamina, a nice point, and turn out. Bar was just down right horrible for me. Trying again now at 31, I feel like I absolute absolutely need a series of workouts before I get to bar work otherwise it's just sadness... have you developed those videos yets?

Wow Nicole, a golf mom! good on you! Never say you're chubby otherwise you will end up looking in the mirror and never be happy about yourself, it's just untoned muscles as you have been, up till now, a very active person! And now together we'll make sure all those muscles will be super toned!

Hi Alessia!!! Thank you so much for your tips. I am trying to do one of your classes every other day. It really helps.
My turnout is really bad. something like 90 degrees :-(. Is there any chance to improve it dramatically? I am 31.... does it make chances smaller? How frequent do you reccomend me to do this class? Thank you again!! Love you and your cats!! Kisses :-* Naama.

Naama, don't worry if you have a flat turnout, it will improve with time. I don't have a flat turnout either !!😘 Love Alessia

if your bum, abs and back of the legs are on fire you are doing it right. If you feel your knees and ankles twisting then it's definitely not right :) Kissy

Is it normal to feel this also in my ankles and calf muscles? I'm a beginner dancer so maybe these parts of my body aren't as strong as your yet or perhaps I'm not doing it correctly
