  • My first attempt at air brushing using intrinsic color dyes and Jo Sonja iridescent paints. Techniques gained from Martin Sabian-smith and Stewart Ferini - thanks guys. Outer surface of the bowl painted using draw string technique.

Is there a reason you didn't use Acrylic paint primer first, or black acrylic paint as a base, instead of Lacquer? I have used clear lacquer on my small boxwood project 6 inches in height -but only as a top coat and to seal the iridescent acrylic paints I airbrushed. I experimented with GESSO( like painters use on canvas) it worked great, this was my primer, then airbrushed-- black acrylic paint, the airbrushed the iridescent colors, these were also Acrylic! -- THEN the LACQUER - 4 light coats with -- the 2nd coat wet sanded then apply the other coats!-- my lacquer was last-- thats the part I don't understand.
I don't think I understand the way you use "lacquer", as the base - I only know lacquer as a sealer and to get a very hard high gloss, beautiful finish.
What am I missing? Any info to learn more would be greatly appreciated

I guess it’s a simple as what I had on hand at the time. It worked out at least for my own satisfaction. I’ve experimented since then and even tried an acrylic white instead which didn’t turn out well. Thanks for your input was very good feedback. Cheers!
