- This is my 1983 Jeep CJ7. I installed a Mercedes OM617 diesel engine with a tuned Dieselmeken injection pump and a larger Holset HX30 turbo. The engine is inter-cooled and runs about 22psi of boost, making about 200 hp. The engine block is a non turbo version with a turbo head, oil filter housing, and turbo added. There are many more modifications I did that are shown in the video.

Honestly this is one of the cleanest conversions I’ve ever seen. I’m not even a jeep guy (came here for the Mercedes’ diesel). The factory couldn’t have done this better. Well done!
Thanks! I don’t like a lot of clutter so I tried to keep this build as clean as possible.
@@themellowmechanic heck even my wife who isn’t a car girl was commenting at what an amazing build this is.
That glow plug ➡️ brake light circuit is really super clever!
That’s a much better idea to marry the engine and transmission I hope to replicate it.
Superb piece of engineering
I did an 83 cj7 with the Chevy 350, and I started on 85 with the OM617. Got my pump from the dieselpumpuk- similar to dieselmeken (they were upset with each other a while back), I didn’t get it completed, but sold the project to my friend. I’m going to be helping him out as much as possible. Love your work with the glow plugs. These old 617s are like tractor engines - very durable.
Bravo, thanks for the great video. Really appreciate all of your out of the box solutions. We are halfway through a Mercedes 300sd full drivetrain swap into a ‘68 Dodge a108. The pump and turbo upgrade that you did, is exactly what we planned also...your driving swap is a great inspiration 💪
Awesome jeep! I put 617 in my cj8 a couple years ago. I really like your glow plug setup! Looks like I'm going to be making some wiring changes soon lol 👍🏼 Great video!
I like the focus on simplicity and reliability. You receiver tubes on front and back are really useful, to be sure.
Beautiful build! Hope I can find something like this for sale someday. Lots of fabricating and custom stuff to build my own. Cool video too!
Very, very cool swap. There is a lot of potential in using the Mercedes diesel engines for more common swap situations.
i did a 93 yj with an om617 and aw4 transmission. i used a on off on momentary switch for the glow and shutoff but i really like the air cylinder idea so ill probably be playing with that here soon.
Nice Jeep! I'm putting a OM617 in my 4runner now, glad to see the driving and acceleration parts of your video, looks like it moves at a nice clip!
I have one with trans if u want it
I really love what you did with your jeep. I have a 1992 YJ and an OM617 that’s waiting in a storage container to be married to it. I really like your center console. 👍🇺🇸✌️
I have an om617 and the turbo and pump ready to install. I wish you lived next door.
Good stuff i did a 83 cj7 the same, i still need to do engine mods
Great video! Love the torque from the diesel!!
Very nice. Wisely chosen components 👍🏻
I have the engine and holset turbo for my swap just need to get the adapter plate and time to drop it in. Love the footage showing the acceleration and the sound, would love to see more driving videos.
Elser2utube, have you had the injection pump modified? That and the turbo was well worth the money to do it. It’s like a totally different motor!
@@themellowmechanic I am going to send the pump out to Benzforce in about a month or so. I have a HY35 and a HE300VG that I would rather to use if I can build a support bracket so it is not just hanging from the exhaust manifold. Keep the videos coming, theh are inspirational for sure 😀
That was a very well pit together video! Love it!
Thank you for sharing. I would certainly watch more 🤘
Awesome video! Lots of good info!
Very impressive!
Amazing conversion! Wow, how did you get that all in there! Great that you have an electrical fan because the one on the engine sticks out a lot.
Ur sharp! Im good myself!! Thats a nice unit(art)
I just got a 73 cj 5 inline 6 love your built
Thanks!
To cool like everything you have done
Thanks!
Fuck yeah what an awesome build
A video explaining the adapter build… even if it just of the pictures would be awesome!
more vids nice car
very nice! im about to build a 71 cj6 and im trying to fit an early chevy nv4500 in it but advance adapters are WAY behind on bell housings and keep exending me back further and further. its frusterating. i was going to put a buick 350 in since it came with the buick v6, but i will more than likely put this setup in it. i dig it! with 115:1, itll have plent of pep for crawling and hiway cruisin.
watched again. i like the non turbo intake idea. ill prolly do that myself. he221w, 30 lbs of boost. should be great. i like yours
for winter use I'll recommend installing a Cummins intake heater.
no need..... there is a block heater that installs easy.
Great build, along with some great ideas -- I am getting ready to do my 1984 Cj7 with a 4inch lift. I have my donor Om617 - Did you have to do any of the oil pan mods ? Great video !
Thanks for watching! I did not do any mods to the oil pan. If I was to do it over again I would modify the pan for axle clearance. I lowered my bump stops, which worked fine for on road but sucked off road.
nice Jeep swap , i have 3 300 sd engines want to do this to a jeep either cj or Comanche , anyway how i awoke up my 300sd without any mods and no money? made a water bubbler from a closed can welded a 1/4 inch cooper line into the exhaust pipe through the top of the can into the bottom , a half inch pipe to the top of the can with a T and a hose hooked to the T into the air filter box the 1/2 inch pipe has a screw on top end , now the secret fluid that i use in the bubbler makes the car so much power the mountain near where i live i used to climb at 50 barely 60 now i can climb at 80mph or more , have to back off because the speed limit is 55 , it also gets better mileage because i don't have to step on the pedal so much , it's freaking amazing , oh almost forgot the car makes almost no smoke when accelerating
I'm surprised the T4 hasn't come apart on it yet. They aren't exactly Robust
Great job!!! Do you know your compression readings? I’m always curious to what other people have while running the dieselmeken pumps
I measured the compression a while a go and got 300 psi in each cylinder.
Love that turbo sound. What you think would hx30 be too laggy for R5 2.5 tdi?
yes you can turbo any engine , as matter of fact i turbo charged VW 1.5 and 1.6 diesels i have seen om116 240d with a turbo , hell i even took a gas block 1.6 VW and changed the internals and head made it run on diesel ahahaha
Cool clean build. I did the same thing as you on the kill and throttle. I don't have a intercooler at the moment because I have been stretching my head on the best way to do it. What size is your intercooler? Fitment is perfect. And moving the grill forward is the best idea I have seen. Turbo wise i went with a vgt turbo from a sprinter. Your build is one of the best I have seen.
Thanks! The intercooler I got from Summit Racing part number FBR-FB602. They don’t appear to still be available, but they might have one the same size.
@@themellowmechanic thank you so much for the part number. I can reference it for size.
Where can I get a air cylinder like that for the shutoff?? That’s brilliant
I got it at automation direct. It's a standard double acting pneumatic air cylinder. 4" stroke .75" bore
@@themellowmechanicwould you happen to have a part number ?
The barb on the top of the oil pan next to the turbo oil drain…did you just plug that off and move on? I see the pcv goes to oil catch with vacuum being generated thru the air intake. Was going to do the same thing. I’ve got an 85 Toyota with a 617 in it but I’m trying to wake it up. Got a small holset for it just trying to troubleshoot the last few things
Yes, I needed a larger oil drain for the bigger turbo. The oil catch can is a must because these are oily motors and it kept drenching the air filter in oil. I turned up the stock turbo to about 15 psi and it woke it up a little. The biggest change was the injection pump mod. That turned it into a different motor!
Any idea what kind of output the motor makes with the upgraded pump?
I believe about 200hp
what if you stall on a steep hill and you have to hit the brakes? The glow plugs will glow needlessly.
Yes, they will glow needlessly. However, the OM617 is a hard motor to stall. I have let the clutch out on a hill without giving it any throttle and it pulled me up. I have only stalled it once, and I am not the best with the clutch!
What did you set the timing at? The recommend 24* BTDC or something else?
It’s been a while since I timed it but I believe I set it at 24*.
Do you have any advice for a 617 to a yj ax15 transmission
Doomsday Diesel sells an adapter kit to mate the two together. It’s rather expensive but the engineering is done.
What transmission did your jeep have?
A T4 four speed
i am putting my on617 together right now. any idea where to get injector shims?
I got mine at Napa auto parts. I was surprised they had them.
@@themellowmechanic really? they can get them? did you ask for something specific for them to know what you need?
I might be confusing parts, I got the injector heat shields at Napa, I had my injectors rebuilt at a diesel pump calibration place. They had the needed shims. Sorry for the confusion.
@@themellowmechanic ok thanks. i will try to find shims and rebuild them myself. the engine i have looks like it has no visible wear inside
Engine....
