Four Days in October: 2004 ALCS Boston Red Sox New York Yankees Highlights

  • On Wednesday, October 20, 2004, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 10-3 in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS to became the first and still only team to comeback down 3-0 in MLB History. Without Dave Robert’s clutch steal in the bottom of the ninth in Game 4 off of Mariano Rivera. Without Bill Mueller’s RBI single. Without David Ortíz’s walk off homer in the 12th. Without the late game heroics in Game 5. Without Ortíz’s huge walk off single in the 14th sending Damon dashing to the plate and to New York. Without Curt Schilling pitching 7 dominate innings in Game 6 with a torn right-ankle tendon. Without Johnny Damon blasting two homers and six RBI - a grand slam in the second and a two run homer in the fourth - than none of that becomes a reality, especially, the Red Sox breaking the Curse of the Bambino by winning the 100th World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Thank you Braves Fan. That level of arrogance in the Bronx was well known enough to bring us Manny Ramirez.
Why did Ramirez come to Boston? Because he was tired of seeing the Yankees win, and by joining the Sox he knew that he could break the Yankees string of success. Plus Manny picked himself up A Couple of World Series Rings, along with a World Series MVP for his efforts.

    • @aj42k
      @aj42k Před 2 lety

Braves Fan here. I was enjoying this as well.
The ONE TIME I can agree with Mets Fans. After 1996 and 1999, SUCK IT YANKEES!!!
When this happened the Braves were no longer the laughing stock of baseball. Who's the Champion now? ME! Choptober is now Champtober!
More in depth with the 2021 playoffs the Yankees were the first team eliminated in the playoffs. Cardinals were the second the next day. 2021 was the jackpot redemption for the Atlanta Braves. Out of 10 teams in the playoffs the 8th favorite to Win It All. 90% of the "expects" didn't have the moving on to the NLCS let alone winning the World Series. When Devin Smith did something stupid and Ryan Braun retired I knew we had a chance to beat the Brewers. The Dodgers scared me the most. Even more than the ASStros and the Brewers. The Brewers didn't scare me at all. The ASStros scared me more but not as much the Dodgers. The Dodgers scared me and if you think the Dodgers scared me, the Giants were the most feared team in the MLB. Unfortunately bad call by the ump and the rest is history.
"If we eliminate Dodgers, we will win the World Series."
Game 5 Braves vs. Dodgers. 3-1 lead? Oh Shit! Here We Go Again.
Before WS Game 5 started, Braves yet again with a 3-1 lead. "DAMMIT. NOT THIS CRAP AGAIN!"
1 hour Before WS Game 6 started. Back to Houston!
"If the Braves don't win the World Series, they will never win it all ever again. Even if they do, it won't be for a very long time."
Just remember how long it took the Braves to win it all before they won it all in 1995.
After 30 Years TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT! Wish Granted!
26 YEARS LATER...THEY DID IT AGAIN!
In Conclusion: Lockout or No Lockout. Season, Shortened Season, or No Season, Braves will not repeat. Yes, I am a Braves fan saying this.
Everyone was saying repeat even during the Braves parade. I wasn't. Why? Think about it. 12 players on our roster are in free agency. 5 players other than Freeman aren't coming back Soler, D'Arnuld, Rosario, and Swanson will be gone. That doesn't count Will Smith either. If Freeman doesn't get signed we will be lucky if we even make it to the second round yet again and then a new First Round Curse will start for the Braves.
As for the Mets, as much as I hate the Mets I see them on the rise. I am not kidding you and I hate the Mets just as much as I hate the Yankees.
Do I see the Mets winning it all in 2022? No. Will they make the playoffs? Yes...but they won't last long.
Good Luck this upcoming season---oh wait never mind.

Every time i watch stuff on the 2004 ALCS it blows me away seeing the amount of times when the entire series hinged on one thing going down. The first two boston wins coming in extra innings.... one dude screws up and the rest of this never happens. I miss watching every single pitch in a game with baited breath.

To think, just last season(In 2020), the Houston Astros were one win away from accomplishing this feat after they fell behind 0-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. But in Game 7 the Rays put on their Hitting Shoes and wrap things up quick by scoring 3 of their 4 runs in the first two innings in winning Game 7, 4-2.
So for now, the Yankees still hold the mark of being The Only Team in Baseball History to choke away a Pennant after going up 3-0 in a Series.

Joe Torre totally blew this series in 2 aspects. #1 He should have brought in Rivera to start the 8th inning in game 5 but he waited until it was already blown by Gordon before doing so.. No way Rivera blows 2 saves back to back nights especially a 2 run lead.. with 6 outs to go..
2nd was starting Kevin Brown in game 7 and then bringing in Vazquez with the bases loaded to face Damon.. totally awful managing decisions.. with those it cost the Yankees the series..

I think of the 03 and 04 Red Sox Yankees rivalry as one long story where the good guy(for anyone but yankee fans…and at this point maybe even some yankee fans) defies the most unlikely odds imaginable to win at the end. Down 0-3 facing the team who has owned you for almost a full century, to the point where you are the butt end of a joke, against most dominant closer of all time…it couldn’t have been written any better.

Yankees Fans: Hideki Matsui is ALCS MVP.
Fox Sports: This is over. Red Sox are done.
Dave Roberts: NOT IN MY HOUSE! NOT TODAY! NOT EVER! You can thank me later!
Johnny Damon: Thanks Dave! I'm the ALCS MVP. You saved us and I thank you for this as well.
Bill Mueller: Hold it! If it weren't for my hit we would have been eliminated in game 4. You should all be thanking me.
Curt Schilling: Oh Really? Did you all forget that I pitched on an injured leg. to save all of your asscracks? Did I mention my leg was bleeding as well? I guess I'm forgotten.
David Ortiz: Shut up everyone! I saved us all not once, but twice with two walk off hits in two consecutive games! Think about that!
Kevin Millar: Wait? I don't get credit for this? You should all be kissing my badonkadonk. I was the only one that had faith all this time unlike each and every one of you, including of all coaches, our manager, the media, the fans and everyone else.
Terry Francona: Alright kids settle down. You should not be arguing. We made history. We should be celebrating. We are having a Fiesta Tonight. All of you deserve respect even the other players as well. Let's Celebrate!
