- Fall is in full swing in northern Maine. The leaves are vibrant with color and temperatures are rapidly dropping. But even with a lot of miles left to cover, we find opportunities to explore the beauty all around us - like climbing an old fire tower and taking in the grandeur of Allagash Falls. The big lakes that have been characterizing much of the waterway to this point begin to narrow into Allagash River proper. Even as our course merges with the St. John River to reach our take-out at Fort Kent, our expectations are exceeded by the diversity and beauty that defines Northern Maine.

In 1970, there was a cabin on Round Pond. I think it was owned by the Jalbert family. The Wilderness Waterway Act required all private property to be turned over to the park when the owner was deceased. Some of the properties were deeded to grandchildren to extend the ownership. It looks like the cabin is gone.
In 1970, I was canoeing on the St John from Baker Lake to Ft Kent. We were just getting ready to descend Big Rapids located upstream from Allagash - when we were notified by a Ranger that a boy had drowned at Allagash Falls. He was with a different group that was part of our camp. Some of the boys were horsing around below the falls and the boy got a cramp and disappeared in the currents at the base of the falls. A real sad moment
We also ran the Allagash that summer. The weather was really hot and we were camped upstream from the town of Allagash. We hadn’t caught any trout. An old man motored his canoe up from Allagash. He anchored offshore from no more than 10 ft away. A small spring was seeping into the river. He cast almost to our feet with a worm on the end of a fly rod. He promptly pulled out several large Brook trout. They were enjoying the cool spring water. Later he regaled us with tales of the last logging runs on the Allagash.
One time we were camping on the upper St John’s on a sand bar. There was a big storm and the branch of the river coming in from Quebec flooded. We almost lost our canoes that night. After that I never camped on a sandbar.

It’s really fun for me to hear your stories! Thanks for sharing. That is a sad story about the boy. It’s quite a powerful waterfall. The history of the area is really interesting to me. I’m sure it was cool hearing stories from others who knew the area during some of the logging days as well!
Wow, I can completely see how those sandbars could be a dangerous place to camp! I guess even if you had a lot of rain further up stream it might hit you in the middle of the night without you knowing. I’ll keep that in mind for future too. Glad you didn’t lose the canoes!

I have done this trip twice ( in company of the amazing Allagash Canoe Trips, Chip and Lani Cochrane) and this video brought me back, so grateful! Like seeing an old friend...I am from MA and have explored pretty much most of ME and plan to retire there in a few years. I would encourage anyone who loves canoe trips to do this one. Thanks for watching along! I use the Snow & Nealley Hudson Bay Axe. I think it’s great. I’ve had it for over a year now and it’s been the perfect tripping axe. Lightweight and does the job really well! Usually I can comfortably split logs with a 4-5” diameter. But I’m not really targeting anything bigger than that for fires anyways. I’d definitely recommend!
@@Beyond_The_Treeline I appreciate the feedback. I use the Fisker although I'm not confident with how the head is attached, excellent blade profile and holds a sharp edge. Main reason was the price. Have land near Jackman, paradise for bushwhacking.
@@duanerichards9868 of course! Yea I haven’t had any issues with the head. That was a big thing I was researching with axes. That does sound like a great place for some bushwhacking!
The videography is nice. The piano background music makes it boring and slightly annoying, honestly. Cool trip though. Thanks for sharing
