Adjacent to the pool house is a beautiful attached pavilion for those great summer night parties. The problem is what happens when the pavilion is subjected to those high wind storms that are commonplace along the coast of New England. Having the enclosed roof with sloping ceiling joists just sitting on 6 columns in a 120 mile per hour wind zone poses a few challenges to the design team. Couple those design constraints with a site that has ledge, water, and some fill, and you have the need for some slightly out of the ordinary solutions. Follow along with Steve as he outlines the problems involved and how he and the design team provided the right solutions, and got this beautiful Pavilion built. Enjoy the Video…….Long Live Our Buildings.

Even with the moment connections at the pier base, There still is tremendous bending moments at the pier flange.
There isn't a shear wall. I'm wondering if those piers can resist the lateral load from the roof diaphragm?

Funny how "light and airy design" is so hard to pull off.

Two questions. You mentioned your structural engineer prefers to anchor to bedrock at all points or no points but doesn’t like to have a mixture of the two. However this design seems to have a mixture of the two.
Next question is was there a geological survey done prior to the design that informed you that you would need two different ways of anchoring this roof? Or was this some massive change order they gave the homeowner a heart attack lol
