Comparison Review: 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman S vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC

The smallest crossover SUV vs the biggest crossover SUV in their respective brands. The 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman S and 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC have recently been updated but how do they stack up against each other?
The Mini Cooper Countryman can be equipped with a base 3-cylinder engine, a 2.0L 4-cylinder (as equipped) or a plug-in hybrid variant. This Cooper S has the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque (141 kW & 280 Nm). This Cooper S Countryman can get off the line and to 100 km/h in around 7.3 seconds.
The GLA 250 is available with only a 2.0L turbocharged engine but thankfully it’s not the least powerful variant in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. That honor goes to the Mercedes A220. This GLA 250 produces 221 hp & 258 lb-ft of torque (165 kW & 350 Nm) that is good enough for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 6.7 seconds. Like many turbocharged engines, the peak torque figure is reached at low rpms - 1,800 in this case - and is sustained until 4,000 rpms.
In Canada, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 2021 starts at $42,400 CAD ($38,230 USD) but if you’re reading this in the United States, you can get without the 4MATIC AWD system which lowers the starting price to $36,230 USD.
The Mini Cooper S Countryman 2021 starts at a very reasonable $35,990 CAD ($33,900 USD). However, on Mini’s website you have to equip it with either the Premier or Premier+ packages (Signature & Iconic in USA). They cost $5,700 CAD & $8,500 CAD respectively ($3,600 & $8,500 USD).

Just stumbled upon this review. Well done. I wouldn't have thought to compare these two cars but they are similar somehow. I mostly appreciate the specs in both Canadian and U.S figures. I also would prefer the Countryman for ride enjoyment. Get rid of the run-flat tires and I'm sure the ride quality over rough roads would improve on the MINI.
