    Also, about black tax. I made sure I never held back when my mother needed anything and I’m glad I did because she suddenly got sick and the exorbitant medical aid fees I paid carried her through without a single billing issue. The dignity and comfort that meagre fee afforded her until she died is incomparable. If you are a miser and your entire family disappears, all the money in your bank account will not revive them. If you can afford to help your family, do it. If someone needs school? Jump in. If a roof needs fixing, raise your hand cheerfully. I bought a sheep for my family for Christmas every year even though I wouldn’t be there. Money is meant to be shared and enjoyed. It’s the uncles with endless business schemes you can safely ignore

    1. Setting expectations at home is VERY important! I've seen a few friends who are Medical Drs who fumble their finances from the onset because they try to live up to the expectations at home, even ending up taking hundreds of thousands of Rands in Debt in their FIRST YEAR as an intern! (I have a few friends who have done this - it sounds insane).

    • @MrYongama
      @MrYongama Před 2 lety +1

      2. The BMW or Merc one is a classic - I just think it's as a result of poor financial literacy but if managed properly, it actually wouldn't be an issue. If you earn around R40k - R45k net as an intern, then R15k a month for car expenses shouldn't leave you broke if you budget properly especially since you essentially don't pay rent and assuming you don't have any major family responsibilities.

    • @MrYongama

      3. Rule of thumb : Runaway from anyone who thinks you have money 😂

    • @DrAnn_Healthhub
      @DrAnn_Healthhub  Před 2 lety +3

      Point number 2 is True. The issue comes with job security. So many post comeserves are unemployed. Personally that whole 15k would go a long way should you be unemployed for a year or longer. Locums can only sustain one for only so long. Once a permanent employee, by all means it makes sense 💯🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾😂👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

    Awesome content, As a medical professional and im fourth generation indian South African and I can related to "black tax" except my family screwed me over with taking loans on behalf of them and failed to repay. In essense i was too trusting. I still drove nice cars but i refused to pay their debts. Family caused more problems lsot my job was unemployed for short period but post unemployment i refuse to pay anything. Gave my BMW back and bought a hyuandai atos. I earn alot and my biggest expensive is rent. Ill buy a house soon once i get them to repay mmth debt cos its not like they cant. They greedy ppl n lazy.

    This is all sound well-considered advice but I would encourage younger doctors to just be happy. Blow your money. During internship besides the not so modest car I got, I went out twice or three times a week and I spent two weeks in Egypt and another ten days in Turkey. Bought every freaking thing I ever wanted and I’m glad I did. I’m a neurosurgery registrar now and I regret nothing. Now I have a kid, a mortgage. Life is decided for you, can’t just go to Cape Town is you want. The responsible way to live is not the best in this case.

    • @DrAnn_Healthhub
      @DrAnn_Healthhub  Před rokem +6

      Good advice with all things considered. You have to however note that things have changed. It's not like in the past where placements were guaranteed especially post comserve. It is rough. To date there's post Comserves who are still at home with no jobs. That's something to consider not to say one can't have fun etc.
