    People are letting their opinions of one show affect a completely different show because they didn't like the ending. This is downright stupid, even if the ending of GOT was bad the first few seasons are incredible. Why should this show be called bad out of association with another even if it's the same director? 3 Body Problem is fine, and it laid the foundation for what could be an incredible sci-fi series.

      I think it's interesting the guys who couldn't keep up with the high standards of the early Game of Thrones seasons when they ran out of books have chosen to adapt a book series where they have no choice but to repeat the same process as the later Game of Thrones seasons. The Earth's Past books are 90% science exposition. What few characters there are exist almost entirely to deliver that exposition.
      I think they've done an okay job westernizing the book's Chinese setting and establishing some of the characters who'll pop up again in later seasons, but they took the cheapest, fastest route to that setup by making them all friends, none of who are well written enough to be cared about as much as will be needed to ground the later books' sci-fi concepts, and as I present across copious interview clips they seem just as giddy to dump a bunch of money on superficial spectacles as they were with Game of Thrones.
      You're right, 3 Body Problem is fine; just fine. The last Game of Thrones seasons were just fine as well (except season 8, which was just shit) only, unlike 3 Body, they had the detriment of ruining a bunch of the better stuff that came before it, and ultimately, under D&D's show running, Game of Thrones ended after being just fine for longer than it was more just fine.
      Why shouldn't peoples opinions of the quality of one show influence their expectations and scepticism for the quality of a new one? D&D haven't exchanged their brains in the last 5 years.

    I have recently just watched the show , I have not read the books but can only form my opinons on the show in isolation.I felt that, while it has potential, there were notable pacing issues. It slogged on in places (Will’s scenes for example). The narrative could have been more tightly woven, possibly fitting into a four-episode arc with extended premiere and finale episodes.
    Character development was attempted and again it wasn't bad , but the execution fell short in certain instances, particularly with Auggie, whose portrayal I found unconvincing and unlikeable.This is not a sitcom where arseholes have friends, I am surprised she had friends at all because she was mean to all of them and everyone else. This made it challenging to stay invested in her arc, especially past the fourth episode, where I found myself disliking this protagonist to the point of indifference about her fate.
    The series’ writing quality was inconsistent, reminiscent of the decline observed in ‘Game of Thrones’ post its early seasons, and this show reinforces D n D middling competency at best. The show’s presentation often resembled that of a SyFy or CW production, lacking that gravitas expected of a major television event like early GoT. Severance is example of well crafted story that looked and felt like a prestige TV event from start to finish.
    Despite these criticisms, I’m open to watching the second season, hoping for an improvement as the series progresses. We are currently devoid of high concept SciFi and this show does have the potential to deliver.

    What I can't grasp ignoring the plot which had so many elements that made no sense as a non-book reader of the series with how they were presented, is how each episode had a 20 million budget yet looked like it had significantly less. Reminds be of that dumpster fire of a show apples invasion which has an even more insane budget. These shows seem like a money laundering scam. Then you have foundation from apple which had less than 5mil per episode budget and it looks significantly better in every regard.

    Ah yes, the infamous Dumb and Dumber. I still haven't forgotten them ruining GOT, even if in my opinion the show started going downhill way before season 8. I'm amazed at how the ending of GOT exceeded the already low expectations I had. At least I can take solace in the fact that the reason for them bum-rushing the ending was pulled out from under them by disney cancelling their deal.
    I had heard of this show from the ads I saw on tv, I must say it didn't really interest me all that much and now that I know who's behind it my interest to watch it is pretty much non-existent. From what you've shown in this vid it's a good thing I missed it.
    Maybe I might pick up the book(s) as that is always a better experience and story.
    The so called best scientists not coming across as scientists is something a lot of modern sci fi shows have a problem with nowadays.
    I might point out the horrible show, Another Life which also has the 'best scientists' Earth has to offer. They have to, if I remember correctly, find a new colony for Earth, or they have to make contact with the Alien race that is threatening Earth.
    In any case the show has these so called 'scientists' devolve into a bunch of teenagers with the angst that comes with that.
    Earth is under threat so you'd think that would make them work together properly but noooo, it's much more important that bland scientist number one has a crush on bland scientist number two, which makes bland scientist number three jealous because he also has a crush on bland scientist number two. Just to name one example of a horrible side plot.
    In any case an excellent video as usual, you have a habit of producing interesting stuff! Eager to find out what's next!

      If it wasn't so annoying how freely such writers as D&D manage to 'fail upwards', I would have been amused listening to them talk about 3 Body Problem and (perhaps more cautiously) making the same mistakes they were compelled to do with Game of Thrones, because of the equally large spectacles and budgets they get to play around with and cling desperately to awards with.
      I don't think they're talentless, but with Game of Thrones turning out as it did, their poor pre-GoT work, and how arrogantly they brush off genuine criticism, I can't help but view them as grifters using their very expensive and high profile medium of choice to stroke some kind of superficial artistic ego.

  • @voiceover2191
    @voiceover2191 Před 4 měsíci +1

    The Chinese adaptation is far superior because it moves at a much slower pace and gives its characters, while already much closer to the books, time to develop and actually make you care about them.
    Aside from Will, who I thought was very well crafted, even though the character he is based on doesn't exist in the first book, was done well and made you care.
    The other four were just terrible to watch, such annoying stereotypes, especially the Augie character, such a waste, especially if you compare her to the male Chinese counterpart in that adaptation Wang Miao.
    I mean, just look at these characters:
    Both women are obviously geniuses, all the men utter failures in their own way, it's just become farcical at this point.
    I guess they thought making Saul character female as well made it too obvious, so the gender had to remain, ah, yes, we can still alter the race of the character.
    This Netflix adaptation already has all the flaws that made us hate the last two seasons of Game of Thrones.
    The Chinese adaptation was made in its entirety of 30 episodes for as much as one episode for the Netflix one and still looked better, sounded better, actually tried to do a faithful adaptation and understood that making an audience care about a story actually involves creating characters you care about, warts and all.
    This is not an easy task as Liu indeed is a writer not exactly good in creating characters that draw you into the story, they are merely plot devices that are needed to keep the narrative going. This made me appreciate the Chinese adaptation even more because with what little material they received from the book in that respect, they actually improved it considerably in that area.

    Both the books and the show are incredibly juvenile, and blatantly incurious about the very concepts they explore. And as the critic has stated, this is a bit of "baby's first scifi" material.

  • @andrewlim9345
    @andrewlim9345 Před 4 měsíci

    Have a mixed view of the Netflix adaptation. While it is beautiful and captivating, it is a loose adaption of Cixin Liu's trilogy. They changed several of the characters and the locations from China to make it more global. The series feels rushed compared to the original novel. The attack of Judgement Day reminded me of the gore of the Red Wedding.

  • @EbonySeraphim
    @EbonySeraphim Před 4 měsíci +3

    I don't like Dave Benioff saying that the Judgement Day sequence had to be "done right" on screen when their adaptation is done almost exactly like the Tencet version but higher budget.The big thing I can credit their adaptation for doing is changing the nature of who was on the Judgement Day to include people born and raised to welcome the Trisolarians. Entire families with children reacting to the horror of what was happening on the ship definitely upped the ante of the scene but otherwise the scene was done exactly the same.
    But this overall critique of 3 Body Problem is pretty shallow when you consider this is to appeal to new audiences not sci-fi hardcore. Your comparisons to how they failed the latter parts of Game of Thrones aren't accurate at all -- to be sure, they uttery failed the later seasons, but their adaptation ability is strong for material that is there. I've watched the Tencet version of 3 Body and honestly I appreciate their condensing of the "science" material. That series put way too much time repeating conversations and applying the same concept over and over on many layers in ways that just doesn't unfold well for a TV show. There's a reason why that show takes about 30, 1 hour episodes, and only gets as far as Netflix's 5 episodes. It introduces far less characters at the same time, and the pacing is simply too slow -- like 5x slower than Game of Thrones was in seasons 1 and 2 (I thought those were perfect). Also, 3 Body Problem isn't actually science and engineering, it's fiction written by someone who probably isn't nearly as credentialed as the characters he's writing about. In broad strokes it deals with the subject matter, but you literally won't learn anything from the books. Science is the backdrop for the space philosophical, anthropological, and socio-political intrigue (not sure if that was the right word) in the story.
    Again, D&D utterly bungled later parts of GoT, but so far so good with 3 Body Problem. I don't expect them to cover all aspects of the book, and nor do I want them to. All of the scientists are also intentionally made to seem like normal (attractive) people, who speak like filthy casuals for the screen. I'm not even a highly credentialed software engineer but I certainly know real conversations in my field are not consumable to those who don't understand the subject. Sure, you can clip them reminding us through dialog that these are the "smartest people in the world" and point out "would all of these leading people really come from the same social group?" To be fair, it isn't entirely unlikely as academics on that level are a smaller group, find themselves in the same room, and probably need a higher level of intellectual stimulation than others.

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I heard the Tencent version was 30 episodes and thought that was mental enough to put me off watching it for comparison. Even skimming through the books I quickly grew tired of the never-ending barrage of fake science.
      My view of D&D is this: the first GoT seasons prove their showrunning is capable of producing good television, so long as they're adapting from something with substantial translatable material and they let better filmmakers take the reigns on their respective episodes. The failed GoT pilot and the increasingly bland directing of each season past the Red Wedding (despite the simultaneously increasing budgets) are evident they bit off more than they could chew from the start. They've done it again with 3 Body, but nobody is holding on to any kind of love for the book characters or narratives that exist merely to platform exposition.
      However, when faced with no material (like the later GoT seasons), or material for which they must invent a disproportionate amount of new stuff to make it work on tv (like 3 Body), and when their arrogance gets the better of them, we end up with the wasted potential of such mediocrity as I view 3 Body Problem to be. They bite off more than they can chew because of the dollar signs that light up in their eyes when they read stories with such spectacles as Asoiaf and Earth's Past. They had to work for The Red Wedding, but plenty more they could just throw money at groups of CGI artists, set designers, etc
      This 1st season of 3 Body Problem isn't bad, but the dial of the simplification of the science was turned a few notches too far away from the concept-showcasing of the book, the characters they're using as the linchpin's of their newly superficial-ised spectacles of science just aren't up to scratch, and neither is the filmmaking. The generic filmmaking seems to be a wider issue with Netflix, but compare the mundanity of the tension surrounding the aliens in 3 Body with the tension surrounding the aliens in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival - a film with a reported budget of less than $50 million.
      I'm painfully aware my standards are higher than most; there already exists enough good stuff out there to last a life time. I'd just like the massive piles of money to get thrown at people more, I dunno... artistically sincere? Talented? The opposite happens enough to be mildly annoying.
