    Personally, I much prefer TXR2 over Zero which I initially thought were just the same game. It is considerably harder because of the sticky walls, which further encourage clean driving and learning how to drive properly. The cars are a tad more balanced and many cars are a lot more viable to use, for example you can beat the game in an FC RX-7 (a class B car) which is nigh impossible to do in Zero; the AWD are as strong as ever but the rear wheel drive cars are more competent and is closer the AWDs in terms of performance compared to the later games.
    The cityscape in TXR2 is also darker, along with TXR3/SB01, both immaculately present an atmosphere fitting of midnight legends; of street racers venturing into the night to make a name of themselves, to enjoy the thrill of racing, to experience fated encounters.
    The home menu presentation is, in my disgustingly humble opinion, is the best the series has ever had, with your car dashing through the highway and lights reflects off of it revealing the curves and contours of the car. It just adds to the atmosphere in comparison to the usual void garages that most racing game use.
    Gameplay wise the handling is a bit more precise, it feels like you have more control over the vehicle (the Dreamcast's controllers having triggers definitely helps). The gears doesn't go crazy shifting all over the place in auto, and the crisper less muted engine sounds helps with shift timing when you use manual. You can drive to Shinkanjou straight from the beginning in case you got bored of looping C1 too many times, it helps break the monotony. You also don't need to beat all Wanderers to go into new game plus, and there are "secret" team members in the regular teams to encourage multiple playthroughs which no other game in the series even attempts to emulate. The secret green HUD also got one of the nicest looking tachometer, with high visibility and clarity which the TXR Zero HUD lacks.
    All in all, love the video and wish you luck. I hope I convinced some people to try TXR2 since it has been written off as an "inferior" TXR Zero in the eyes of many.

      Reading your comment you might have at least convinced me to try it, though after working on this video I'll need a break from all things Tokyo Xtreme Racer related, I also pinned this comment for everyone to read, since overall it is a good read and might make people consider TXR 2 too, especially since I was of the belief that TXR Zero is just an improved and expanded TXR 2.

    It's a shame that this series didn't get truly appreciated until the past few years when people started making content on it. I remember picking this up back in 2014 and absolutely loving it.
    I'm happy that it's enjoying its time in the limelight now. Thank you for putting together this great essay.

    I remember finding a copy of this game at the thrift store for only five bucks. No manual was in the case, but I just said “Eh, fuck it, I’ll learn” and coughed em up.
    To say that this game changed everything about how I perceive cars, and car culture as a whole, would be a great understatement. I’m happy you made a video essay about this game, man, I really am :)

    • @TheDaeNIEL
      @TheDaeNIEL  Před 8 měsíci +2

      That's interesting, I never really considered that Zero as more than just an expanded PS2 port of 2, but upon doing some basic research it is interesting to see Jintei/SpeedKing missing only to have his potential place taken by Purple Meteor, since according to Fandom wiki Meteor is in the same category of bosses as White Charisma, which adds more depth to his bio, as he's not just some good racer, but he's one of the best 2 racers on the Shutokou BEFORE Jintei arrives.

    • @shingosshojiopoulos6608
      @shingosshojiopoulos6608 Před 8 měsíci +8

      @@TheDaeNIEL in street supremacy it is said that purple meteor returned just so he can teach Jintei a lesson. Which is why you can only recruit him if you beat him with Jintei's car. If I remember correctly he was one of the final bosses of TXR 2
      Also, I don't think that ??? is supposed to be a ghost or an illusion like the final boss of TXR3.

    The biggest pleasnt suprise in my history of gaming. I bought it 2 years ago, expecting just shitty quirky title to add to my ps2 collection. Ended up loving it to death. The living proof for a concept of something more than the sum of it's parts. Taken apart the game should be mediocre at best. But it's just incredible. Magical. By far my favourite "arcade" racer, even surpassing NFS Underground 2. It's an experience not a racing game.

    A actually decent video over TXR in general and it's focused more or less than the less clickbait ones. I will commend you on that one. Though you got some stuff wrong in the gameplay section mostly relating to Aerodynamic tuning at 33:01. They can reduce weight, but there are DragCoefs that add onto the default drag coefs the car has by default, the more drag the less speed / cornering grip. The same tricks sorta work with TXR2 in this front as both games internally handle aero the same with minor differences. So it's really a visual thing as it is a performance thing.
    Other than that great video about the game and it's truly concise. I wish more videos about this series actually went in depth just as much as this video did.

    Pretty decent video essay, although I'd recommend a tad more editing at parts. And maybe a bit of restructuring might help, since I feel like stuff about the gameplay should be talked about first before delving into the rest of the game. Also, defeat Speed King and White Charisma on the Wangan you pansy. Nah, I kid, I challenged both on the C1 Loop as well. Always glad that there's more people talking about this game, it and the series in general has a place in my heart.

    • @TheDaeNIEL

      I guess I could experiment with the structure a bit, and as for challenging the bosses on the wangan, I sort of did that in my original playthrough where I was driving a Skyline, but I challenged them on the Yokohane, and would only win because they crashed into something, which whilst more fair, sort of would kill the entertainment factor a bit
