This is my favourite rendition of this piece ever. I love the entire interpretation of the piece and the incredible colours of sound in the organists registration. Definitely a bucket list piece for me to hear this played by the same organist at Ulm Cathedral!!

"Vincent, why do I have goosebumps listening to that?" I explained why to her. She said please play it again. At the end of the second listen thru she still had goosebumps.
what a wonderful interpretation of this work. This fine organ and organist are fitting for Durufle's "vision". As a builder in the USA I'm always envious of the environs that European builders have to work in.
This piece is a favorite of mine and I haven't played it in many years. The grandeur of this Walcker organ is certainly well matched to the rapturous acoustics of this magnificent stone nave. The instrument reminds me of the Beckerath organ located in St. Joseph's in Montreal CA with the 3 sets of Chamade reeds. It was a joy to play that instrument a few years back.
I have noticed several comments complimenting the sound of the opening statement (0:11-1:04) which sounds like full organ with reeds. Monsieur Durufle's registration calls only for coupled foundations and mixtures because it is following a decrescendo after the fortissimo climax that concludes the preceding Adagio. If the full organ was used at the beginning of the Chorale Variations in the context of the entire piece, then it would be incredibly disproportionate. However, treating the Chorale Variations as a stand alone piece, I also compliment Herr Froschle here for his innovative registration of beginning with full organ. Voila!/Achtung!
Thanks Friedrich Fröschle I stopped working when hearing this just to listen, you caught my attention totally and yet I have heard many versions. Durufle has not to be always so soft as he uses to be played and your interpretation is very clear - I rediscovered the piece.
A most exciting rendition, indeed!! I actually liked the reeds incorporated in the opening choral, which is really a plain chant, turned choral. Normaly, it is registered full to mixtures. Beautifully crafted performance!!
Amazing ! Wonderfully impressive. The fine musical work from Monsieur Duruflé. I heard him play live at an organ recital in Marmor Kirken (Copenhagen), many years ago; it is a recital that I will never forget.

Burkhard Terhart Das Ausnahme-Instrument in der Basilika zu Kevelaer kann die Pedalkraft zum Glück exzellent mitteilen. Ob das in Ulm so geht (steht der 32´nicht im Turm ?), ist mir nicht erinnerlich. Es zählt zu den nicht ganz erklärlichen Phänomenen im Orgelbau, daß 32´-Register, obgleich gut intoniert, in manchen Räumen nur schwach wahrzunehmen sind, was dann Enttäuschung auslösen kann. Die Große Orgel in Ulm ist aber in vielerlei Hinsicht ein ganz bemerkenswerter Wurf und ihre Gestaltung geht mit dem gotischen Raum eine ausgesprochen gelungene Synthese ein. Wieviele Orgeln sind ohne jeden Bezug zum Raum ? Im Ulmer Münster an der Chororgel pars pro toto nachzuvollziehen.....
Dieses Phänomen habe ich bei uns in Bocholt in St. Georg gerade kennengelernt. Da wurde die Orgel um einen Bordun 16´im SW erweitert, den man mittels Quintschaltung auch im Pedal als akustischen 32´ nutzen kann. An der Orgel selbst klingt das ok bis dünn. Wenn man sich aber hinten ins Schiff stellt, kann man das Register nicht nur hören sondern auch fühlen. Die Orgel dort empfehle ich übrigens ausdrücklich mal zum Probespielen. Herrn Hilse von Fleiter ist da ein wirkliches Meisterstückchen gelungen.
+Burkhard Terhart Diesen Klang kann man ,aber Orgel nennen ich spiele selbst auf einer großen Orgel muss immer wieder feststellen es fehlt was auch wenn man 5000 Pfeifen zur Verfügung hat.Nun spielt aber auch die Beschaffenheit des Kirchenschiff eine große Rolle .Was ich in Johannesstift in Berlin vermisse ist das natürliche . Wo die Musik vernichtet wird nur weil der Raum trocken klingt ,der Organist kann sich glücklich schätzen in ein Dom zu spielen ,weil dort der natürliche Raumklang gegeben ist .
It's my understanding that this is not a cathedral, not being the seat of a bishop Rather it is a Minster, or an important church. Also, this is not a Walker. It is a Walcker organ.

yes he did. choral Evensong is broadcast every Wednesday on BBC 3 at 3.30 p.m. and I heard this done from Worcester Cathedral a few years ago. It was magical!
try subscribing to the polish(?) choir chor cum sanctis here on you tube. they do the choral verses interspersed with the organ variations as you describe.
Not just envisage, but on the recording of his own organ works originally released in the USA by the Musical Heritage Society, he performed it with sung plainchant. As you can may well imagine, his recording was the definitive interpretation of this masterpiece.
