This is one of my favorite songs from Avril. And Ginger you're right. This song came out like 20 years ago! Avril does write/cowrite her music, and actually has written for other artists as well. For example, the song "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson (if you know it), was written by Avril.

My 7yr-old just discovered Avril Lavigne and plays ‘Sk8er Boi’ and ‘Girlfriend’ over and over and over 😂 Truth is though, I really don’t mind. They’re perfect, pop-punk, energetic, fun songs!
