Jim Underwood If we start allowing officers to defend their lives from animals intent on murder, then law abiding citizens will think they can defend their lives too. This could seriously deplete the number of Democrat voters if laws were enforced stopping the dead from voting. Its simple intolerable.

What planet are you on? Have you ever tried to shoot someone with the intention of just injuring them? I didn’t think so.
Even when injured someone high on drugs can still run and be a potential threat. Just ask any soldier that was in a firefight with the taliban in Afghanistan. A fair few were high on heroin and would keep going after being shot with high powered rifles.
Aiming and hitting someone in the arm or legs is almost impossible when under stress. Both the target and shooter were moving at the time.
The risk of missing is a lot higher therefore the risk of injuring or killing an innocent passer by is far greater.
All police and military are taught to aim for the largest area of the body which is the torso. There is more chance of hitting it than anywhere else on the body.
The only exception that I know of is in the case of someone wearing a suicide vest. Then you aim for the head (at least it was the case when I was serving). This is one of the only ways to try and make sure the vest isn’t detonated.
If someone was running at me with a knife I would absolutely aim to kill and if he died I would t regret it for one second.

Before making uniformed judgements you should know the training police officers receive have been studied by experts over decades in order to protect the public AND the officers. Although officers also receive training in dealing with mentally disturbed individuals, there was nothing else this officer could or should have done.

Funny. I lived in Lancaster County (including the city) for 27 years. I always pronounced it Lank-is-ter. I was an intern at the York City police department when I was is college. York was always worse than Lancaster City as far as crime went.
