- 00:00 Borneo, the fourth largest island globally, has emerged as a poignant symbol of an imbalanced struggle against powerful corporations exploiting its resources, disregarding the well-being of its people, biodiversity, and ecosystems.
03:08 Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei collectively inhabit this remarkable island.
04:50 Armed, every resident of Borneo stands prepared.
10:42 Ancient beliefs dictate that spirits dwell within each tree.
13:10 Once renowned for headhunting, the island's inhabitants now live harmoniously.
13:59 Ali sustains himself by selling birds in the market.
19:48 Borneo faces an imminent ecological catastrophe, having lost a staggering 85% of its primary forests.
21:05 The timber derived from these forests is renowned as the world's most resilient.
24:24 Battling the downpour, he maneuvers through a treacherous muddy road.
28:11 In the Derawan archipelago, locals fervently pray that oil exploration will spare their idyllic home from destruction.
32:37 The inhabitants of this archipelago are affectionately known as sea gypsies.
35:30 As he traverses with a load of timber, the road grows increasingly perilous.
41:00 Logs are transported by floating them on waterways.
44:55 However, occasionally, the forest reclaims the land, erasing all traces of human presence.
god bless that man who is planting trees
Omg this series is so addictive. How is this not a series on The Discovery Channel. So much better than the majority of their current content!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Did anyone felt frustrated as hell? We cannot blame them, they are doing it for a living
I need to plant trees in my locality now on. Will start from 10 saplings per month
God must have spent more time creating the east. Awesome beauty
But men have done destruction to God's creation, and God shall punish men with natural disaster as reminder to mankind
No, God did it before your very eyes

terima kasih telah videokan wilayah kalimantan indonesia.harpen channel youtube.
I love these documentaries but I hate the fact that they exploit the animals and torture the birds.
Agreed! I'm glad he didn't catch any, but it's sad there are none to catch.
This is wat humans do best take from mother nature and don't give back 😢
👍🏻
9:07 Precision work. CRUNCH!
These videos always induce strong emotions for me. I feel for the local people struggling to make a living. Yet the devastation on the ecosystems and wildlife makes me sick to my stomach. The orangutans will be extinct by the time humans have stopped the country bare. 😪
.....that's the evil that arises from making business out of poverty stricken class. Make them do the ecological damage exploitation by promising them fair wages when they fulfil the company's requirements on time. It's a vicious cycle that has actually no foreseeable solution.
There is 7.8 billion people and ALWAYS GROWING on earth (compared to 4.3 billion in 1980).
More people use MORE and they use alot of wood no forest will be safe in 20 years when we hit 10 billion people.
3rd world forests are the first to go with no laws ,quotas or management.
Because their government never cares about it.

Agreed
instead of planting new Trees. mother earth will get a pig head.🤮
Kuria John Karina, I read somewhere that oil has been discovered in northern Kenya. I hope the environment will not be polluted like it continues to happen in the oil-producing region of Nigeria

Watching from Lady Gaga City, NY, USA
I was born in Borneo, when I was a kid, I loved seeing orang-utans at the back of the house. But right now I'm 20 yrs.. never to see them play behind the back of the house. .. :"(

as a north borneon it breaks my heart to see such a beautiful land be destroyed for timber and other resources. this needs to change
Sedih x rasanya liat hutan d tebangi
Interesting its similar to my hometown back in the days
Once they start getting that oil kiss that island and that beautiful water goodbye! Its a shame greed destroys everything
facts
Poverty x exploitation from the west = what you see here.
People no longer care about preserving the world & its resources, its all about living for the moment
Yeah, but it's old information you got.
We didnt continue the Shell, Petronas and other west company their period time since we will take it back.
Reforestation started in 2013 and we've planted 4,5 Million trees.
@@hannn4063 replanting trees wont help couse when u cutting old tree (all 100 years old CO2 emissions from that tree released. First what we nead to do is stopp cut the old trees and find genetically modified solution like fast growing trees

Excuse me, since that deforestation we've planted 4,5 Million trees in 5 years

Nice place, Abha, but not many hardwood trees IIRC.

Hard to watch, makes me furious and sad, Docu should be renamed in "how we destroy our planet"
I agree with your conclusion. However, I would amend it to "how we rape and destroy our planet."
You can plant trees according to your convenience , complaining won't help
And THAT is "Building Off The Grid"!
Now i love this channel more than Discovery and NGC
In borneo there is 3 state. Kalimantan is indonesia. Sabah and sarawak is part of malaysia. Not to forget brunei is another country
😂😂🌐
Big deal
@Meri See Yes, Sabah is a part of the Philippines. They must know the history behind it. Truth hurts but it's true.
@@unicornvideocollections8328 what history? Do you think sabah there have no sultan? Let me tell you, the whole borneo is under sultan of Brunei long time ago, where you get the stupid idea sabah is part of Philippines? Don't you know when you get those name'' Philippines '' go read some history before commenting here
@@panzermora902 from what country you're from? Seemingly, you don't know what you're talking about. Ok, I will ask you something to start with your research.
1. What happened in 1658 why Sabah including Palawan was given to Sultanate of Sulu?
3. Do you know where is Sulu?
4. Way back in 1878, Why the British North Borneo Company has control to Sabah? To whom they are paying the rental price of 5,300 rinngit?
5. Despite of that, why Malaysia is up to now claiming that Sabah is part of their territory?
6. Do you know what Mohammed Jamahula Alam did why there's a territorial dispute up to now?
7. Perhaps, you may also want to dig deeper about politics, politicians and their intentions during that time on why Sabah is in fact under Philippine territory.
You answer those questions and get back to me so i could give you more. At least you will learn sonething to comment on other than what you only learned from tabloids.
Of course! There's a Sultanate of Brunei. Well, answer the first question so you'll know its participation on why Sabah was given to the Sultanate of Sulu.
After a very long time
Each tree is the soul of their ancestors and they sell them to a foreign host in hell for a few euros.
It's easy to write such romantic bullshit comments while living in the comfort of a first world country.
Plant trees if it hurts you so much
Man......just keeps fuckin' up the Earth daily, how long can this last?
The Iron tree will be used for plywood?
They only use soft would to build framing. You can not put a nail in hardwood. Hard wood is for Furniture and expensive finishing trim work.
Hard wood was great for structural beams supports but the invention of steel I-Beams and engineered softwood plywood beams took that over.
Interesting but too depressing for me.When will we stop destroying everything! We will learn soon enough.....
I hope so,
i like that old nissan

After watching this video, I'll never again complain about the roadways the company sends my truck upon!
Wellcome to the jungle in Indonesia
I just remember when he say that bridge built by filipino. It also my brother said when he work in sirawak logging. They improvised bridges just to cross other side. And he said if you dont know how to operate machinery you should know the basic.

Nice 👍
IN TRUTH THEIR ANCESTORS LIVED BETTER THAN THAY DO.
All they have now are dirty clothes, a wrecked forest, and children who have no homeland. Doesn't seem like a good trade-off to me.
Moffat Colorado here
In 2016 the last unpaved road in Kalimantan was completed paved with the inauguration of Tawau Bridge in West Kalimantan
One cannot be tired and still remain focused. Not while driving a big rig in these conditions.
Watching from France. I"m so sad to look at the deforestration and destroying natural habitats of wild fauna and flora.
As a person who has done tree service I was even sad seeing those trees getting cut. But you need to understand if you were born there you would be doing the same exact thing.

Borneo 👍👍👍👍
A Noble Man, he did everything for a living in order to make his Family Happy. Paying respect to this fisherman as my Father did the same.
Unfortunately without forest and fishing management they can not pass the work to their children.
When they say moving house, i did not expect lifting the entire house .
Yes that is my country
They move the old wooden house to somewhere of the jungle. Does it easier to build it on location?
Honestly I thought the same thing. I mean it’s for a logging camp couldn’t they use some logs and chainsaw boards from them and assemble the houses? It’s got to be cheaper than paying the guy €500 to drop it off lol
Their lucky if they could build a birdhouse let alone a full size shed.
It tave 3 brain cells to cut a tree down with a chainsaw.
Running a measuring tape with angled saw cuts is another thing.
I think banning goods from certain countries is a good way that maybe slow down deforestation
Who's going to ban countries from selling their wood. Those same countries are the main ones who funding the wood cutting. Come on. Third world problems for first world resolution
More adverts please!!

What about engine compression to help braking?
That's the point. Poor people don't care about nature. They are busy making a living.

THE GOOD NEWS.
We will finally get to see what Borneo looks like from under that forest.
There will nothing but one big clearing to set up the bird trap.
Makes me sad, these companies should be getting locked up for cutting all these trees, worst part they are not planting new ones ! Where is the government
In just two decades Borneo lost 85% of its natural habitat equivalent to 2/3 therds of France . This is heart breaking💔. Thousands of trees being cut down just for a mere glow on your neck to show it off to your acquaintances
Thankfully the roads are shitty, the forest would be cleared out!
who's neck? their? they just do that for living
Same thing is happening in Amazon!
@@davidpethick83that will be their new capital, so not for long I guess.
Soon enough there are no trees and animals left.. Sad
Iam from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Interesting. I've always wondered how the idea of sacrificing something to appease God(or the gods) came to be, can find this ritual across most cultures at some point in their histories (and even today).
I think the idea of sacrifice came about due to ignorance and fear
Lost 85% of primal forest.why isn't the government(s)replanting!! O the jellyfish ❤the solidarity is awesome💪
Woah that brigde build by the filipinos???
In an alternate reality animals sacrifice jungle people
