    A couple suggestions from a lifelong artist:
    Tape: Painters tape is great, but you can also put the tape strip on your jeans - this gets additional fibers on it and make it less sticky.
    Paint: If using acrylic paint, dry brush it on - put very little on your foam brush and use a dry paper towel to brush off the excess. It should be like using a dried out market. This will prevent the pages from warping and paint bleeding inside. It'll also be easier to pull apart. But instead of paint, try using a dry or semi-dry pigment.
    Galaxy: you're using a flat brush - instead try a rounded brush (kind of shaped like a makeup powder brush) and alternate between a stippling motion and a swirl motion. For the stars, thin down white paint to heavy cream consistency and use an old toothbrush to flick the paint. (Dip the bristles in paint, then flick your finger across the bristles towards the canvas). Practice first!

      @heather roper. What do you think about using spray paint for this?

    • @EolianWolf
      @EolianWolf Před 3 lety +3

      @@cyana5867 Worth a try! I'd suggest covering the rest of your book fully to prevent overspray. Spray a few *very* light coats - slow build up of the color will make the paint less thick and be less harsh on the paper. The main thing I'd worry about it that most spray paints are a powder coating, so it might need a light coat of matte sealer after spraying color. The second concern would be the pages sticking together. Maybe try it on a book you don't like as much first. There may also be some CZcams tutorials for doing this with spray paint - I haven't done this in this way before, these are just my guesses based on what I know about the medium. :) Good luck!

      Thanks for this great comment. Wouldn't dry pigment rub off? I mean like get them on your hands every time you touch it?

    • @EolianWolf
      @EolianWolf Před 3 lety

      @@nanamuskuri6630 Yep, you'd want to dust it very lightly with a couple coats of matte sealer to lock in the pigment. Too thick and the pages will stick together, so a couple thin coats to build up the sealer and make sure it doesn't get onto fingers.
      (Again, never done this, just using my knowledge of artistic materials to apply a best guess to doing this project.)

      May I ask how can you do to make sure you are not using toxic paintings? I mean sometimes when you pass pages people tend to lick their fingers to turn them and I am worried about what kind of paint to use to be sure they are not toxic.

    The yellow frog tape works best in my opinion. It has a very low tack, so it's not super sticky. I've painted 20+ books now and the tape hasn't torn anything at this point.
    I tried using acrylic paint First and I did the galaxy. And my pages tried to stick and a few tried to tear like that. And I did not enjoy pulling them apart individually...
    So after a little further research I moved on to spray paint. (The kind in the cans.) And have not regretted it yet. :) I was a little worried before I tried it, but the trick is just to not get too close to the book while spraying. 4-6 inches is fine.
    So, in my opinion, spray paint is the best way to go, less hassle and it looks and feels great. And the pages do not really stick. Just one big flip through and your good. (The Metallic colors are always my personal favorite. I've been looking for the glitter spray paint to try, but haven't had much luck with that yet.)
    However using the acrylic was probably the most fun way to go about it. Lol
    This is just my opinion and my favorite process for going about it, after watching lots of awesome videos like yours, so thank you for the inspiration. :)

    Cool... I've been surveying different methods. People who take the cover off and do lay conservator work like renewing spine glue etc. use (for solid color) archival ink... they squish the text block sideways a little (like just fanning it a tiny, tiny bit) and rub the ink on with a pad, then squish-fan the other way and repeat. But it will only do so much artistically, so I like lookin at different stuff. I want to disguise un-removable stains I know are nothing gross but need covering.

  • @wayneyadams
    @wayneyadams Před 2 lety

    You can significantly reduce page sticking by brushing on a small amount of talc along the edge and rubbing it in with your finger. You want the talc to coat the inside edges of the pages, but not the edge you are painting, which is why you rub it vigorously with your finger.

    I'm too scared to paint the edges of my books, but I have "defaced" hardbacks before. I just sketched out what design I wanted, and then used jelly roll pens and acrylic paint. So far I've only done my ACOTAR and Cruel Prince series. Sarah J. Maas loved my defaced copies so that was cool.
