- I get asked whenever I post one of my painted books, so I thought this one I would film and share with you! I got Giver of Stars for my birthday and thought it was such a perfect cover for painting!

I don't have a PO box, but I thought I'd drop a link to my book depository wish list. It's not an affiliate link (that would be weird) and in no way am I asking anyone to send anything! This is just the list I add titles to so I remember them later ☺️.

you could start a business doing that
I am convinced that you’re a wizard! I don’t think I’ll ever have the courage (or the artistic ability) to try this, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching you create your masterpiece! 😄💕
awe thank you! I have so much fun doing them!
You should do a painted book tour! Would love to see what other work you've done
Agreed!!
I'll add it to the list! That would be a fun video :)
yessss
This is soooo gorgeous. I propaply will never be able to do that. I want to try painting edges of a book, but that would be just in one color. :D
I would like to see more of these.
Go for it! It's so fun! I started with just solid colours to get a feel for it
It's been forever since I've been inspired to get back to my art, now I can't wait to try this!!
This is beautiful and one of the best 'book-painting' videos I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing!
This has probably become my most favourite video of the year!
I do custom binding for my comic books, and this could potentially take my future projects up a notch!
💖
You did amazing! I definitely want to try this
Wow, you are incrediblely talented
Beautiful! And you picked one of my fave books of the year so far (Giver of Stars) so I just watched with stars and hearts in my eyes!! What a fun quarantine project, too!! Thanks for sharing!!
I can't wait to read it! it sounds wonderful :)
That was really amazing!!!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Just lovely!
Thank you so much for this!! I tried this with but definitely did too much paint at once, and didn't have the clamps ( just had it smushed between my legs 😅). I'll try this again and hopefully get better results and do an actual painting instead of a solid edge!
I'm truly in awe. I know I've already said that, but seriously!! This is magic!
Thank you so much, Hilary!
This came out SO pretty!
thank you!
OMGosh! I love this! I want to give this a try on my own novels. Thank you for the detailed instructions.
Absolutely nothing short of perfection, you're amazing, can I please ask how long you let it dry before separating the pages? I've been dreaming about dying the edge of my book black and intend to use gouache paint, congratulations seriously, such talent.❤
SO BEAUTIFUL! What a talented friend. 🥰
Thank you so much!! love you!!!
These painted edges are absolutely beautiful 🌿🌻🖤
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you for giving such a detailed video ❤I really want to try it too 🥰
This is sooo cool. I will take your advice though and try a letter opener instead of my finger, maybe less likely to tear a page?
Maybe it would open easier with gouache? The result is really gorgeous!😍😍
That is so pretty!! I want to try this!❤️
This is so gorgeous!
It turned out so pretty😍 I'd love to try doing this to some of my books, thank you for sharing!
Wow... this is so pretty!! Gave me goosebumps as it all came together in the end💞
The book looks so amazing! I have a question for you, When you tear apart the pages, do your pages get like little white fuzzies all around the edges, if so how do you get them off. Thanks!
Some do it a little bit but I find most don't. I think it may just be certain paper is more prone to it than others, and/or maybe thicker vs thinner paint? I just left the fuzzies because I figured I'd just run the painting haha
Wow, that's an awesome job. I wish I was brave (and talented) enough to do that. Please do another one on film. It was so much fun watching the process. 👍😊
I would definitely love to do another one! They're hard to paint on weird angles though haha . I also need to figure out some better lighting for the future haha. I'm so glad you enjoyed the process! :)
I'm just imagining all the ways I would mess this up XD
Right?! That's what I was thinking too! 😄
hahaha we just call those "happy accidents" lol
Absolutely beautiful!!
It came out beautifully!
I absolutely LOVE this ! It came out so beautiful ! Thank you for the tutorial , I'm going to check out my bookshelf and see if I'm brave enough to try this.
You are so welcome! send me a photo on IG if you end up trying it :) I'd love to see!
Wow this is so beautiful! I could never do this though because I do not have one artistic bone in my body!
Ha, I just wrote the same thing!
thank you so much!
This is so impressive, you honestly need more recognition ❤️
definitely want to try this!!
GORGEOUS, Bre! You are a talent ❤️
Thank you so much!!
Thank you very much🌻, I have been looking for learning it for a long time, just one question, what color did you paint? Acrylic paint?
Wow. The best!
Superb🎉
Wow! You did an amazing job!
Thank you so much!
Omg this is stunning. 😍 you are so talented. I love this!!
Thank you so much!!
❤❤❤wow its sooo cool
So fun!!
It’s perfect
So wonderful 🥰
Honestly I'd love to try that ! But since I don't have clamps and the skill to paint, even if it's just one color... I'm too scared to try x) Maybe one day for sure, on my Norse Mythology hardcover but definitely not now
I think I may try this on a book my Mom and sister wont weep over. Like our Star Wars books that none of us read.
This is stunning! 😍
Thank you!! 😊
What are those clamps called r they on amazon ! Also how many hours to fully dry?
Very neat - thanks.
I'm not artsy enough to do this but I love the look!!!
thank you! It's such a fun little way to make art :)
I mean, it's stunning! Love love love it.
Thank you so much, Krista!
Love this! I want to try painting my own books, rather than paying a fortune for special editions (I'll declare bankruptcy if I do XD). I have a quick question in relation to the paints you are using, are those acrylic paints? How come your edges don't crinkle, usually paper goes a bit crazy when wet.
They’re acrylics and it’s not really wet but damp
As softmist said, they're not really wet. Just damp. But also the clamps help not only to keep the paint from getting between the pages but also they keep the pages from wrinkling. Since they get slightly wet at the edges but dry in the position they don't crinkle once dry and separated ☺️
This is amazing! Could you mention which clamps did you use?
Can you feel the paint as you’re reading? Or if you’re flicking the pages absent-mindedly? Looks beautiful!
Hi! Ik it's been 4 years but i was wondering if this can only be done using acrylic paints or are other medium safe to use as well?
Kinda bummed that when I did mine, bits of the paint actually came up when I was peeling open the pages after. May e too much paint? I tried to do it thin but 🤷
THIS IS SO COOL! I could never do this but I ADORE it! The book looks so amazing after you are done!
Hahaha, you couldn't even use a knife cover... smh
I can't wait to do more!
also i totally had to call you out because I knew you would cringe hahaha (I'm also one of those knives and scissors people lol)
Wow it's beautiful! What kind of paint do you use?😁
Wondering if it’s possible to paint the books using watercolor?
can one use acrylic paint markers? would it bleed into my pages if I use it?
very pretty~
Thank you! 😊
Amazing job!! Question, it is watercolor or acrylic?
This is amazing but imagine if u don’t like the book anymore, do u keep it?
Oh my goodness I want to send my books to you and pay you for painting them
eep! you're the sweetest! Thank you!
Try using waterbased paints so the pages won't stick as much
That it true, they would stick less. But the colour would bleed much more and likely be less opaque, and less detailed. I've never used gouache before, maybe that would work? But I have zero experience with it so I can't say for certain.
Inspired. Gratzi.
Glad to hear that!
Hello? Which color are u using to paint the edges? I tried the poster color but it keeps smearing my fingers when i touch it, eventhough it’s dry. Thanks
hey! I used acrylic "liquitex" paint. Any sort of paint that dries with a powdery finish will likely transfer onto you fingers? The acrylic paint I use doesn't transfer at all. It looks matte because of the paper edges, but painting on canvas it has more of a sheen to it when it dries. Hope this helps!
(liquitex is just the brand name)
Did u use acrylic paint?
It's been a year, just curious did tye colors fade?
To solve your red and blue problem, buy magenta and cyan instead.
Which paint did you use?
May I know which type of paints you use to do these? I don't know if the normal paint would be a good choice
I just use "liquitex" brand acrylic paints. They're pretty cost friendly (at least where I am in Canada they're in my budget). They're regular acrylic that I use on canvas but on the books I use really really thin layers so the pages don't get too stuck together.
@@callmeaftercoffee thank you for your answer 💖💖💖
I painted my book's edges with the same brand of paint, but my edges keep sticking and the pages keep trying to rip. What can I do to alleviate this? Wetter paint? Maybe I'm painting too thick?
Hey! It's likely that the paint is just too thick, or possibly that the clamps could be tighter? If the paint gets between the pages at all, it makes it really hard to separate. Thick paint is also a big one for the pages sticking. Thinnest coats as possible and just build them up carefully if you need to. I've also had a book that had almost "frayed" feeling pages? Like they weren't cut as sharply? (probably explaining this so badly) but the pages seemed to stick together more than my other books that i've painted. With a lot of patience and being careful I was able to get them apart with only a couple oopsies through the book. (it was also an older more used book so that may have posed a problem). Hope you get better results next time and some of this helped!
With my artistic skills, I will end up ruining my book.
Ho boy...I'm about to ruin some books ...
