    Tally Hall has been a favorite since the pre-MMMM days, when they were releasing random videos on the Internet like the "What You Don't Know" series. Loved the original release of MMMM and wasn't on-board with all the remix/re-recording changes made for the Atlantic re-release. "Good & Evil" hooked me immediately on release, despite its decidedly more mature sound.
    Joe Hawley (red tie, creative force behind "Hawaii: Part II") also released a solo album, "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley." Rob Cantor (yellow tie) went on to achieve further viral Internet fame through "Shia LaBeouf," "Christian Bale Is At Your Party," and "Perfect," the last of which (minus the celebrity impressions) features on his solo album, "Not A Trampoline."

    Sad Fact: Joe (red tie) and Zubin (blue tie) got mugged and beat up during the filming of Good Day. Joe bled from the mouth, and Zubin got a black eye. There's a picture somewhere of the aftermath.

    Been a big fan of Tally Hall for a long while (since I was in middle school!).
    I feel like the main thing that makes Tally Hall such a special band is how different the members were, taste-wise. Joe Hawley was a oddball experimentalist who dabbled in many genres (hip hop, folk, calypso, etc), Rob Cantor was a power pop/indie pop purist who listened to a looooot of Weezer (maybe some They Might Be Giants too), and Andrew Horowitz was a Brian Wilson-esque songwriter with a love for the twee and the absurd. All of these guys were heavily involved in the songwriting process, which created their weird, scatterbrained sound.

      He did a solo album and worked on a rather obscure one called "hawaii pt 2" that got really big a while back. Tracks like "the mind electric" or lyrical strange odysseys like those on the joe hawley solo album, are incredibly interesting.
      I think Joe Hawley might actually be insane to some degree, and his stuff seems to verge the line for me between incredibly high class high writing quality pop music and outsider music in terms of deeper subject matter. Trying to make sense of "Bring her Along" makes my brain bend.
      For god's sake the guy wrote a song where it first plays backward with one section that's normal, and then the song plays again forward and the feeling is the same across both plays of the song.
      Hawaii Pt 2 (credited under ミラクルミュージカル for anonymity) on its own is an incredibly interesting and obscure in atmosphere and probably the most consistent thing I think anyone from Tally Hall has made in terms of an album.
      On top of that you have his work with tally hall, tracks like Ruler of Everything, &, The whole world & You. (the demo and studio versions of those tracks feel very different) Tally Hall wasn't just Joe Hawley, but they were incredibly talented, eclectic and interesting.
      There's songwriting feats all across those 2 albums, and several of their songs won the John Lennon Songwriting award, including this one.
      I do think Tally Hall works better in individual songs, that's a fault of their quality as musicians honestly where their stuff just doesn't work together as full albums.
      Sorry if this is a bit rambling.

      @Nicohoho Před 3 lety

    • @Skullkan6
      @Skullkan6 Před 3 lety

      @@MakeWeirdMusic Neither Joe, nor the majority of Tally Hall and it's variety of side projects tend to be very prolific in terms of output and have around 1-2 albums per project. Unless you start diving deep into demos and the like it's not too deep. Every once and a while you might find a new branch (Waltz in E-Major, Op. 15 "Moon Waltz" by Cojum Dip is one of my favorites I discovered recently) but it's not actively evolving.
      It was actually surprising to see this video since a few months ago I remember rewatching this video and thinking about the ludicrous amount of effort that must have gone into this and wondered if any content creator or journalist would've noticed this, let alone someone I am ALREADY FOLLOWING!
      A little under a week ago I probably did similar to what you did, combed through the video at a slower speed, taking note of the ludicrous number of chances, background details, sketches and the many changes and the raw amount of effort that must have gone into it.
      I don't know if you've seen/heard this yet, but if you want a good example of something similar to this video in terms of complexity and intrigue, check out "Variations on a Cloud" by ミラクルミュージカル which was released by the same project as Hawaii Pt 2, but NOT on the same album. I think it may have been a single, but I honestly have no idea how this was released. (Edit: It was initially given as a preorder bonus and then released as a free single, aww that's less mysterious.)
      My theory is it was dropped onto music services with zero fanfare, in terms of construction it kind of reminds me of a pop music version of Starless by King Crimson, a callback to earlier works, a kind of farewell while at the same time wholly original. Warning: This may be wholly inaccurate.
      I would highly recommend listening to it on its own before you watch the video which tries to make the meaning of the song far more explicit, but the way the song is constructed and there's all of these little callbacks across it to works you may have heard before that are just fascinating.

    I'm massively lyrically inclined and (mildly said) don't really care for the sound.
    But I find that the creative geniuses behind both Tally Hall and their respected counterpart Miracle Musical (and solo projects) capture the attention with obscene sounds and lyrics. Which at a glance sound like non-sense, but when a little more attention is given to the words they sing, rather than how they sound, I find that they have more meaning than an average person will ever notice. Now Joe Hawley is especially known for his eloquent lyrical speech and writing style. His lyrics sound experimental, but are actually beautifullly poetic. It usually takes a dictionary and encyclopedia to fully understand however....
