    These are good ideas for people who have not done this before. One issue that some people should be made aware of and then you might notice in this video is if you are using the Apple camera connected in the way that you described and is the default way, you will notice that channel one goes to the left and channel 2 goes to the right so if you watch this video you’ll hear that his vocal is pound hard left and the guitars. Heart rate. Ideally you would want those as duel mono and mixed in the center. A good way to fix this problem is to insert a small audio mixer and mix channel 1 and channel 2 in dual mono and send the master output into the airport audio interface. Or if you have an older phone or tablet like an iPhone 6 like I still use, you can use the JK Audio iRig type of device to be able to adjust your audio input into your phone and it will also capture into your phone in a summed mono audio signal that will fix the isolated left and right channel to blend it into a dual mono centered audio experience. Just some extra thoughts.

    I copied this setup but instead of running it into a focusrite ( i dont have one and they are selling fast on ebay and amazon) I run it into my Mackie 12 channel mixer which is what I had already at home and i just needed to get adaptor cables. The USB mixer plugs in straight away into my desktop and the OBS software. So it is exactly as in a live gig.

    This is THE best OBS tutorial -- I keep coming back to it. Question: I've set up my iPhone as a secondary camera, per your instructions, and it works fine except for one thing: The iPhone camera image that shows up on my laptop includes the button at the bottom of the phone and all the words-- "lapse" "Slo-Mo," etc.--that are below the camera image on the phone itself. How can I get rid of all that and get an image that's exclusively what the phone camera is viewing? Thanks for humoring me.

      Another option is have a look at an app simply called “Shoot - Clean Camera” - about £4 and will give you a clear image when plugged in.

    Thank you so much for this idea. As it turns out, I have a Peavey PV6 that is a USB mixer, but unfortunately it has no onboard effects. I needed just a barely audible tinge of it to keep the vocals from sounding too dry. Your video made me remember that I have a Fishman Performer, which I've used live extensively. Just plugged into my interface, and the sound is 1000 times better than with the USB mixer, and it still allows me to dial easily as if I were live. Thank you! Sometimes it's better to use what one already has. The mixer was sponsored by a local music shop, but now I realize I never even needed it in the first place!

    Great vid, John! Thanks! One thing you didn't mention that is an obvious huge advantage of using OBS as a musician is the option of applying filters to your audio sources. It's like having a whole DAW with basic plugins at your disposal. It's just nice to be able to do it inside the program if you need. I use filters to get compression, EQ, reverb and limiter, and it's all there inside OBS. I can't believe this software is free, it's so good.

    This was marvellous. I especially appreciated that you basically got on with it and didn't waste time waffling about irrelevant stuff before the main attraction even started! I have a question, if I may; my upload speed is terrible - max 0.5 Mbps. sometimes 0.4. As I understand it this is too slow for livestreaming. But would it help if I was able to have the video only in black and white? And if so, how can I get that? I have an iphone 6+ (and an interface and mics etc). I've got as far as installing OBS, actually the StreamLabs version. If this were to work out, I've been asked by one of my places of work to livestream to Facebook a charity gig, various tuition colleagues have been doing these and some useful ££ raised. Unfortunately, the tradition now is they happen at 7pm...

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety

      Hey 👋
      so first off, the black and white idea doesn’t matter when it comes to digital streaming cause it’s still sending a certain resolution, not matter the colour. But if you want a black and white look, go to your camera on OBS and right click and add a filter.
      However I can let you into a little secret.. I am the same. My broadband currently Max’s out at 0.7 upload.. so I actually use my phone as a personal hotspot for my Mac!?! I know.. mental. I luckily have unlimited 4g on my iPhone so I’m using that to stream.
      Streamlabs is an awesome package, especially on mobile and well worth investing the time to understand it.
      I have JUST made a new OBS video today. Check it out.

    Thank You so much JP.... I've spent the last few weeks looking at CZcams Tutorials from gardening to baking and of course music. This was the most enjoyable and informative video I have seen. Hi John!
    Firstly thank you for such an awesome video, much needed during these wild times, like you said, especially as musicians a better quality gig is much better!
    I have a question, as i'm not that tech-savvy, but i was wondering, I normally do streams on my Instagram, and I have seen a couple people use irig or irig stream, however, this apple camera connector kit looks interesting too!
    Just trying to paint a picture of the set up in my mind. I would love to run it by you!
    I want to be able to plug in my dynamic, or condenser mic ( either my SHURE SM58 OR ZOOM H4N handy recorder) whilst also playing my backing tracks during the stream ( with an occasional guitar or piano playing) but my main concern, for now, is a good mix on the mic and clear BT's playing.
    Is there a way i can use my audio interphase ( m audio m-track 2x2 c series) to do all this, and run it through my LOGIC PRO X so that I can basically run backing tracks and also have a vocal channel allowing me to add some FX to the vocals during the stream?
    I hope i am making sense right now, but is there a way to run it through the laptop directly into the phone to get a good sound with the mic and backing tracks? For this would you recommend the irig set up, or the camera connecting cable kit that you have used?
    Thanks again!
    Warmest
    Selin

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety

      Hi Selin 👋
      So.. theres a few options here but I will tell you my ideas and see what you think.
      Basically you have a few options but the first that springs to mind is investing in a small mixer to plug everything you want in and more importantly have control of the volumes quickly.
      Then plug the output of that mixer into your m-track.
      You can then use the mrrack with the apple usb camera adapter and into the phone.
      HOWEVER - since you are using an apple mac for backing tracks, then have a look at getting into OBS - you can send the backing tracks to OBS with a little plugin called Blackhole Audio for mac.
      Then you can use the phone wired or wirelessly as a camera into obs with the sound going through there too.
      Again, you would have volume control but it would be all digital.
      Hope this makes sense. Let me know what your thoughts are and lets talk more. 👍🏻

      The short answer is yes and yes! Hehe
      With ReStream there is an option for it in obs settings under stream.
      And for effects, click on the audio options (gear icon) or right click on the source and pick Filters. There tou can add a ‘filter’ which includes eq and compression but also VST plugins. 👍🏻

    Great video JP. I will say that you mention an advantage of Filmic Pro is that you can change the exposure and lock focus. You can do that with the native iPhone app as well. You have to touch and hold and it will lock focus wherever you are touching. To adjust the exposure, you touch and hold and then slide your finger up or down and a slider will appear beside the box and exposure will go up or down as long as your are still press-holding.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety

      Hey 👋
      Yeah that is very true and yeah i know about the exposure and also locking the AE/AF 👍🏻
      But the downside is that I am mirroring the whole screen on to OBS so you’ll still see the user interface and all the on screen buttons.
      I use Filmic Pro to film all my footage for the CZcams channel and it’s just an added advantage.
      A cheaper option is an app called ‘shoot’ which can also get rid of the on screen interface.. it’s around £2.99 - apps.apple.com/gb/app/shoot-clean-camera-feed/id964565026

      JohnPaul Music UK Yep the interface staying on the screen doesn’t help if you are looking for a clean feed for OBS, but it’s a tip if you are just wanting to record a video. After watching your video I did some searching and found the LiveAir Solo app. It’s free and gives a clean feed for OBS. I tested it last night and it works great. Hi JP just wanted to say thx for taking the time to explain how to use this streaming tech way of life. At 72 and a retired sound tech I get many questions in Eastbourne East Sussex from local acts but none as much as now as we all stay in lockdown about their live stream being unbalanced on their live stream using just the internal mic on their ipad/iphone so it seems to be the mics used by apple are not as good as the android ones. or maybe apple have a built in gain clipping device as it appears to allow louder mic vocals and lower the backing tracks for those setting up as if live to stream a show. where by others using android devices are more balanced I have heard. Of course obtaining any cables or hardware now is not easy but as least after your brilliant video I can share it and help them all have answers so thx again

    Have you ever done a comparison for Latency with 1, a USB MIXER into a computer, vs. 2. an ANALOG MIXER output into the analog line in of the same computer? WHAT is the actual DIFFERENCE with the computer doing the analog-to-data translation, compared with the USB mixer doing it? What does your result recommend?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Mario. 👋
      So in my experience, I have had more latency with a USB mixer into the computer and then coming back out to speakers than going into the speaker first and then sending that to the computer. For my setup, I’m not interested in using the computer for anything more other than to stream so I don’t want to hear the audio from the computer. The computer is my audience in that respect. This is why I plug into a speaker first, so I can hear it (cause I do live looping and need to hear what I have created and be in time) and then send that line out from the speaker to the Scarlett 2i2, like I would send it to a main PA speaker or sound engineer when doing a gig. I can control everything at my feet cause the TC Helicon and the HeadRush Looperboard is my looper, sound FX and mixer rolled into one.
      I hope that makes sense?

      I have not tried it with an analog mixer directly to the line in of my Macbook Pro 2012, as i use the Zoom H4 with its two channels, one for guotar and one for a mic with phantom 48v. I should think there would be more work for the computer CPU withoug the analog computer, but i would like to know how to test it for any latency in each case. Thx!

    I do live streaming gigs and want good sound. Trouble comes using a laptop with shitty inbuilt sound card and crappy webcams. So now considering getting MacBook because I know apple’s camera and audio interfaces are superior. I currently use pre-recorded tracks for backing and play live guitar and vocals. Tracks come from my iPad into a small xenon mixer along with guitar and vocals into same. I then stereo output to an external Maya usb sound card connected (usb) to laptop, thus avoiding the mini jack socket altogether. I listen via in-ear plugs from the mixer’s Phones output. Sounds is good and all is fine, just lots of cables! Camera is laptop inbuilt which is limited of course. So your suggestion of a MacBook sounds interesting. The OBS app looks useful too but in order to switch scenes and the like you’d have to stop performing wouldn’t you? Pity someone can’t operate that separately.

      Hey Kenneth. 👋
      Yes. The way you would do that is to use a plugin for OBS to hear Reaper.
      So..
      If you are on Windows, checkout Voicemeeter Banana www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/banana.htm
      If you are on Mac, checkout BlackHole Audio existential.audio/blackhole/
      Then add an audio input device and pick either blackhole or banana. (Weird sentence🤣)

    Thanks for the excellent video! I wonder if you can recommend a distributor for what I do: I am a folk "edu-tainer," catering to all ages, but especially to kids - normally in school, library, camp, church, festival and private settings. I combine storytelling of folktales with folk music accompanied on banjo, guitar, autoharp and mountain dulcimer, sometimes twisting a balloon figure as part of a story. I have a lot of video footage of me performing with these audiences. How can I get it in front of kids and adults who work wioth them in these kind of settings? Hi JohnPaul! I help run a live venue for that group of artists that falls into the singer-songwriter, folk, and Americana categories. Many are solo or duo acts, but there are those with quite a bit more. I'm wanting to do a weekly live streaming concert for some of these artists. Using what I already have in my humble home studio, I'm wondering if you can help me determine the best use of that equipment for this purpose. Here's what I have:
    I have a MacBook Pro with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, a Scarlet 8i6, I'm running Logic Pro X, I have an iPhone X, a Rode K2 Tube microphone, Sennheiser 935, and access to our venue's Behringer X32 Producer and other equip like SM58's, etc. I'm assuming with this specific setup there is a "best way" to apply this particular set of equip. But I'm at a loss as to what is best. Any input would be so appreciated. And thanks for the great videos! Darrin

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety

      Hey Darrin 👋
      Ahhh thats right up my category. 👍🏻
      So I am gonna make this super simple for you. You have access to what 90% of people don’t. Thats LOADS of gear.
      Its really simple in the terms of streaming. What I would do is set up like a live gig. Use the equipment you need to set up a live show and get that into a mixer.. then take the sub mix out of the mixer and throw that into the computer via the scarlett 8i6.
      Then use OBS Studio to grab that audio and either use the phone or a camera for the video capture.
      Have a look here at the video I did about how I set myself up on OBS - czcams.com/video/mB_-yh7LGk0/video.html
      Also you could use a phone wirelessly with the NDI, which OBS understands once tou have the plug in which is broadcast quality video - but you need a good wifi connection or wired
      Heres that video here - czcams.com/video/1OyfzQ-sHRs/video.html
      Right thats enough homework for now 😂
      If you want a full consultation, I do offer that through www.buymeacoffee.com/johnpaulmusicuk where we can chat and go through the tech and I can do a follow up with you and test. 👍🏻

    • @darrinpaul1343
      @darrinpaul1343 Před 4 lety +1

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK Hey Bro! Thanks so much for the follow-up! I will check out the videos you have suggested and see what I can get rolling. Will I have the ability to control the live mix real-time if I come out of a sub mix on the Behringer 32X Producer into the Scarlett? I guess I would have the main mix for the room, the monitor mix for the artist, and could still mix via the faders for the real-time streaming show with the sub mix selected. Is that right?
      My upload speed where I am at my home in a more countryside rural area is between 13Mbps and 19Mbps as far as I can determine. I do have access to other places to do the shows that would have better speeds if necessary, but the preference is to do the shows from here.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety

      Regarding the 32X, if you are worried about mix control, give the manual a once over.. im not 100% sure on that one but I would have thought that the mix should be controllable.
      Regarding broadband speeds, it really is trial and error. Spend an hour or two just testing different settings on OBS. Do a few mins private stream on one setting, watch it back, then alter it and try again. That way people are not watching you test stuff out and then you can just delete the private streams.. or get someone you know to watch it live and get them to give you honest feedback.
      👍🏻

    However, I want to use IPhone/ipad camera for better vid quality but not getting in OBS ..ipad connected to dell Laptop using USB cable, not working.
    Do I need additional plug-in or apps?
    2. Vid & Audio mixing and Streaming issues-
    I am using x2442 behringer mixer, I m able to get the audio in OBS and getting the same quality in Streaming. This also connected via USB. fPS is 30 or 29.5
    Vid out is 1280*720
    BUT AUDIO AND VID are not sync as vid has latency.
    3. FX effect in Headphones -
    Unable to get thE FX (REVERD and echo) in Headphones. Which is connected to usb mixer phone out. However same effect are coming from MAIN out..my main speaker.. but not audio is coming in Headphones which singer will use to for karaoke. How do I get these echo effect in my headphones

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Kalyan 👋
      1) for iPad / iphone capture I would now recommend using NDI camera app and the NDI plugin for OBS. Much easier and sends broadcast quality either plugged in or even over wifi (but plugged in is better). I made a video about this here:

      2) latency - click the gear icon ⚙️ on the audio mixer settings on OBS and play with the offset settings - mine are 200ms - just under a quarter of a second to delay to match the video
      3) if your mixer has effects, you’ll have to check if its sending them. Some mixers when in a USB mode just send a clear signal in and out of the computer.
      If its not working, you can right click on the audio input and goto ‘fiters’ and add in echo and reverb and effect plugins on OBS - but then you would have to disable to FX on the mixer. But check the manual on the mixer about the fx going through the USB.
      Hope all that helps. 👍🏻

    This is great! I’ve only started with figuring out OBS. This has inspired me to work with it more. I have to put the sound through a channel mixer set up, because I use Ableton for looping. Hopefully I can figure that out!👍

    Honestly the best video on the subject right here! Question though, can you send audio from a DAW into OBS? or is there a way mix audio and use plugins in OBS?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Steven 👋
      Thank you for the kind comment.
      To answer your question, yes you can.
      You just need a piece of software to tell your DAW to reroute to OBS.
      If you are on PC have a look at VoiceMeeter Banana (yes that is it’s real name 😆)
      If on Mac, have a look at BlackHole Audio. 👍🏻
      You would send your audio to the DAW and then from DAW to OBS and then out to your audience. 👍🏻
      Just remember there would be live processing going on there.
      Other option is that OBS will do plugins.
      Click on the gear icon on the audio you want to affect and OBS calls it ‘filters’
      Hope that helps. 👍🏻

      Initially yes but you offset the audio and video and play with the latency and you should be fine. Do a few private practice ones. 👍🏻

      Hi 👋
      So you just need a small package which is a virtual audio driver to send the audio out from jamulus and into OBS, like internal rewiring.
      On a mac, get BlackHole Audio and have a look at their setup page to swnd from one application to another
      .
      Here you go: existential.audio/blackhole/
