That’s why, people do forget that most of them do get inspired by a different god and make them better known in the game that we know and love. Same way that Marvel did so with our two favorite gods within the Norse Mythology also. Only REAL difference also, is that their completely different people in the Norse mythology, then how we got the actors to portray them.

    • @Novumic

That’s actually arguable. Remember the Greek Myths explains the creation of the universe from their pov. That means the myths scales universally. Even minor deities, like myth Kratos, would be at least a galaxy buster.
By limitation of a video games, game Kratos scales no where near universal level. What made it worst is that they made the Norse Gods canon which means that all other pantheons from other religions are likely canon as well. That scales down the power level of all pantheons, especially the Greek pantheon, down to continental level rather than the presumed Solar system level if only the Greek pantheon was real and all other religions are non-canon.

I was instantly inclined to make the connection that's why I liked the story of the original god of war so much. Also Hercules was a demigod just like Kratos and actually killed a god. He was also allowed to join other gods in mount Olympus as depicted in GOW3 as well. He also killed his wife. He also had immeasurable strength. I was biting my nails when I actually came across Hercules in GoW3 especially due to the fact that Kevin Sorbo voiced the character who also played Hercules in Hercules Legendary Journeys.

Kratos from God of War is a mixture of a few mythological figures. Heracles being one of the stronger ones (murdered family, rage issues, son of Zeus, ect), but, in the end, God of War is only mythologically relevant in the most surface levels. Name level mostly.

Even if they didn't "know", they must have kind of known. There is no way they randomly came up with that name, specially since they probably already knew or were researching about Greek mythology.
The name, at the very least, must have been something they read at some point and it stuck, even if they didn't know why.

  • @GanonGhidorah
    @GanonGhidorah Před 5 měsíci +5

It's been said that when designing a character for the first God of War game, the name "Kratos" was picked purely because it sounded cool and the connection to the mythological Kratus was _pure coincidence._
However, if I could go back and rewrite the stories of the God of War greek saga games, I'd include references to it as a subplot. I'd introduce the idea that if certain Greek Characters die, they eventually get reincarnated in a new form.
We know from God of War 2 and 3, that part of the story is Gaia trying to manipulate Kratos to free the titans so that they can overthrow Zeus - that's the end-game.
What better way to do that, than to gaslight Kratos into thinking he's _one of them?_
Kratus, among his siblings, were four of Zeus' most loyal servants. But we all see from the games how loyalty to Zeus is _returned._ I imagine that at some point before Kratos' birth, Zeus tricks Kratus - double-crossing him and having him murdered.
This would greatly upset Kratus' parents - Pallas and Styx. Long after Kratos is born, and becomes a very powerful Spartan Warrior, maybe even the God of War, the two have an epiphany about him...A mortal having shown such strength, that he is the living embodiment of _power._
They become convinced that Kratos is their son, reincarnated. They try to convince him otherwise and even seek to welcome him into their family...Unfortunately, this would happen either before or after the events of Ghost of Sparta - Kratos has lost his _real family,_ and wants nothing to do with any Olympian anymore.
I feel like this would plant the seed in Kratos mind - if he is Kratus reborn, then he is a titan, and he was betrayed by Zeus even in a past life. Gaia of course knows the truth, but lets this seed cultivate into something more - it serves her purpose in cultivating Kratos' hatred for the gods, making him easier to manipulate.

He is a Titan that personifies strength and is a brother to Nike (a goddess and personification of victory), Bia (force), Zelus (dedication, emulation, eager rivalry, etc) and Scylla (we all know who she is) and is the son of the giant Pallas and the Oceanid Styx (Personification of hatred and goddess of oaths, thus the phrase "I swear on the river Styx" being the most serious oaths and every promise made on Styx's name should be ALWAYS fulfilled and not broken).

I always assumed Kratos was the hypothetical son of Zeus destined to overthrow his father, which Zeus averted when he drank his first wife.

Yup they were extraordinary kings with exceptional abilities to build and destroy.
They ruined Greece’s megalithic temples, what they didn’t destroy they recarved and took credit for the build. The acropolis is a good example.
The kings before them are as the myths say. But context is required to make sense.

Yes I believe he was the God of Victory or something. I liked how they kinda still tied that to him, because before he recieved the chaos blades he was addicted to the feeling of victory and being more powerful than his enemies.
edit: After one google search, he was actually the God of Strength, it was his sibling Nike who was the Goddess of Victory. Still, young Kratos revelled in being more powerful than his enemies.
edit 2: ah this was covered a few seconds into the video... this comment is meaningless, time to jump off the tallest peak in Greece.

That's kinda the premise of the GOW Games: Kratos is the one.
In real Greek Myth though... it's a little bit unclear.
The titaness Metis, one of Zeus' former lovers/wives(?) was prophesized to bear Zeus a child that would dethrone him... which led him to swallow her.
In that case, the child in question would either be Athena, or Athena's yet unborn brother.
Prometheus was supposed to know who that god would be...
      Somewhat going off topic but...
At one point Zeus and Poseidon both desired the titaness Thetis but when they heard the prophecy that Thetis would give birth to a son mightier and more powerful than his father, they both backed off AND helped the mortal king Peleus have her.
Thetis gave birth to the demigod Achilles, who, ironically, turned out to be a very loyal and loving son to his father, King Peleus.
