Literally is. Those strongman need to be fit. It’s not just all 1RM’s like people think.
But strongman came first! Modern strongman has definitely learned some things from crossfit. I've always said that strongman and crossfit are 2 sides of the same coin. The main differences are that strongman prides itself on being able to do any lift with anything, even if there is somewhat of a formula to the competitions for organizers to follow, and strongman also emphasizes the top singles far more often than crossfit does. The 2 sports are coming closer together more recently though. The crossfit games (I think it was) having a max clean and jerk and max snatch event over the last 2 years shows that the people running crossfit understand that people want to see some performance of heavy lifting. When you combine that with WSM, the main driiving force currently in strongman (for how long?) showing moving away from the more formal static power events after 2016 or so, I think they are both clearly responding to an audience that wants to see people who are both fit and strong.
@@GutsBatman last year it was a mac sandbag clean at the CrossFit Games, which was very much strongman.

Those criticising Rob's depth need to watch his 435kg squat at Arnold's 22
Depth for strongmen is hard being mobile enough to get there while staying tight and strong enough to not get pan caked by weights 90% of the population will never touch. Potatoes going to potate, haters going to hate
If he could squat 435kg I'd think he could squat 75% of that at least parallel. The hardest part of the squats is getting in that hole and getting out. He's a good squatter regardless though.

GOOD GOD, that set of 335 for 20 and he just walks away from it. I did 315 for 20 and I was on the floor recovering for 15 minutes, at one point I legit wondered if I was going to die.

It's basically his bodyweight lol. You could also do that 😁. 20 rep squats get hard AF when it's your 10rep max for 20. Insert super squats program
@@LeGou Rob is well under 300lbs and bodyweight ratios don't just scale up 1:1. This isn't the same as someone who weighs 150 doing 150 for 20

I have a hard time imagining 3x10 on 90 ... For that heavy a squat ... Like yes most gym goes can squat that weight, but no I doubt most gym goers can do what Rob did, 50 reps at 335 squat and 40,000 lbs in an hour on big taxing compounds. That's a lot, keep in mind he's about 300 lbs himself so a lot of this is near bodyweight.
Not being a smart ass, genuinely curious. Obviously Rob is strong and moves well, but why doesn't he hit parallel on squats. Is that just not important for strongman?
They have to hit parallel as far as i know
Not as important, as it's not usually a competition lift. The deadlift is far more important obviously. If there is a squat event in a strongman comp, oftentimes it is lowering the bar/plates to a pre set height (like boxes) and that depth will vary from competitor to competitor. So, since Rob is shorter, it probably wouldn't hurt to be squatting lower, but I think he's doing fine for himself lol
@@tylerskiffington2980 Thanks for the answer. I don't watch a ton of strongman stuff so don't understand the nuances. I just found it odd that he wasn't hitting parallel. Certainly not a criticism, just a curiosity since he's obviously accomplished.
Squat is basically a leg accessory for them, it's just there to build general leg strength
Plus it's pretty well known in the strongman community that it's relatively easy to cheat depth in strongman comps (not that I'm accusing Rob here)
This wasnt a serious workout for rob... Him and licis have incredible squat technique but you can tell he's a lot weaker then before mostly from injuries

Absolutely love watching weightlifters discover the "joy" of 20 reps. Last time I ran it was last autumn - before my weightlifting sessions - 20 reps every two days to try and find my max. Got to 150kg. All time best is 160kg. It puts hairs on your chest. Posts are on my IG.

Many elite squatters don't go ATG in their training sets. Helps to save their knees and lower back. Ray Williams does the same thing. They save full depth for top sets and competitions.
