Townshend, you can´t measure how important he was to Rockmusic ... unfiltered guitar, great-grandfather of Punkrock. Entwistle, probably the greatest Rock-Bassist ever. Moon, drummer ... maybe only bowing to Bonham. And Daltrey, what a frontman.

"Meet the new boss same as the old boss"...and
"The parting on the right is not a parting on the left"...
Are two of the greatest anti-establishment lines of all time in rock and roll history.
its referring to the political arena meaning both sides Democrat and Republican work for the rich because money runs the world not politicians and neither Democrats or Republicans makes a bit difference but the rich want us to think that they do.
      Because after you vote....
"There's nothing in the street looks any different to me and the slogans are effaced by the bye"

The Who filmed this live performance at Shepperton Studios near London for a movie they would later release called "The Kids Are Alright". In the studio next to where The Who were performing, the movie "Alien" was being filmed. The cast and crew of "Alien" took a break and went over to watch The Who gig. They like the laser show at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again so much, they borrowed the laser equipment and used it in the "Alien" movie. So the next time you watch "Alien", keep an eye out for The Who's lasers. On a different note, a young woman named Chrissie Hynde was in the audience that day. Several years later, Chrissie became famous as the lead singer of the band the Pretenders.

Heh The Who had 3 front men, Townsend, Daltry and yea even Moon the drummer. But standing there stoicly just doing his job is one one the best bass men in the business. Entwistle is the reason the other guys can be all over the place. He was the rock. Here is the isolated video of him on this show, incredible czcams.com/video/80dsyo2Ox-0/video.html

They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "My Generation", "Baba O'Riley", "Who Are You", "Substitute", "Happy Jack", "I Can See For Miles", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Magic Bus", "Pinball Wizard" etc.

You're right about it being an angry song! They were living and performing all through the "consciousness revolution" of the 60s, they were at the famous Woodstock festival, and by 1970 what had changed? They also created the amazing _Quadrophenia_ double album around this time, all about growing up poor, young and working class in London, which is just as angry in a different way. Amazing band, and some of their songs are actual comedy, but mostly it's full of anger and regret.

Great discussion in regards to the politics of the song, as I've been on both sides of the argument in my 51 years. Until 2018, I had voted once in my life, and that was as a person of color who heard time and time again growing up, how much others had sacrificed for that right. After I voted that one time, I saw nothing change, and figured why bother? My wife who is white and a few years younger than me, had pretty much the same experiences(had only voted once ages ago). Enter 2018, and we saw first hand how fragile this all is, and we have been voting ever since. You really can't say things NEVER change, because if that was the case, women still wouldn't be allowed to vote, blacks would still be slaves and gays/interracial couples wouldn't be allowed to marry(just to name a few). Things always change, maybe just not as fast as we would often like. Thanks for the reaction as well as the commentary.

This clip was filmed for a documentary about the Who called "The Kids are Alright", so it was filmed in 35mm I believe, the same used for actual movies. It also allows for cleaning up the footage over time, and why this looks so good being so old, as I believe this is the remastered version. The Who was also very much a visual band, and they filmed almost everything they ever did, which was great for the history of the band. Sadly, a group like Van Halen as an example have almost next to zero quality archival footage of their earliest years. Which is such a shame, as Eddie is one of the best to ever play, and not seeing and hearing those early shows is almost criminal.

You said this song was from 1978, that's actually when this live performance was filmed. The SONG was written and recorded in 1971, when the Vietnam War was going on, when there was promises to end the War by US Presidents (Nixon), and so The Who, although English, were speaking about these empty lying politicians like Nixon, who promised to end the war, but actually increased the war and killed Americans for 5 more years and bombed the hell out of innocent civilians in Cambodia and Vietnam for no gain. I'm not saying this song was specifically about that, its more general obviously and applies to the English govt also. (Note John Lennon spoke out against the Vietnam War in songs like Give Peace a Chance, Imagine etc). This was their statement at the frustration of empty promises.

Voting is so important that here in Australia registering to vote is mandatory and voting is compulsory at the federal and state levels (not for local councils) and fines are imposed for not doing so. It is a Westminster form of government ( except that the upper house at the federal level is a US style senate) with a preference voting system ( placing 1, 2, 3, etc alongside the candidates names on the ballot paper) and candidates must accrue 50%+ 1 of the votes to be elected. This ensures that those old enough to vote are involved and that all candidates are elected with a clear majority of the votes cast. On average 95% of those eligible vote. Compare this to the US where less than 75% are registered and the voter turn out, on average, is less than 60% of those who have registered. The last federal election had a roughly 69% participation rate and that is a record. The essence of Pete Townsend's great lyrics are so true, before, when and since they were written.

Voting is important for the legitimacy of the Rich Men North of Richmond - but not so much for democracy. I fully understand why your State is forcing you to vote - making voting voluntary, as in a free society, would reveal the lack of respect those people deserve.

    • @JohnHF1957
      @JohnHF1957 Před 9 měsíci

@@HenrikRClausen Voting in Australia has been compulsory since 1924. My state, South Australia, when it was still a British colony, was one of the first places in the World to grant the vote to women in the 1890s. Modern democracy is about getting a decision from the biggest possible majority. That can't happen if people don't register or bother to vote. The voting system in Australia may look like "forcing" but it is the same as having laws about speed limits on roads, it is necessary with some aspects to set an applicable standard and enforce it to get people to do the right thing.

Another legendary protest song from the Vietnam era was “Effigy,” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. I think you would like it.

As others have said, "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" is one of the best rock lyrics. summarizes things in just a few words, how often our leaders let the people down. or even worse---authoritarianism, oppression, corruption, etc.

Hello from Australia to my favourite reviewers - you guys are great! AND you don't spend all our time drinking coffe or whatever and actually watch the vidio instead of yourself trying to look cool. You should try "Baba O'Riley" and "I Can See For Miles" at least but all their songs are brilliant. Highlights for me were John Entwhislte (Bass) standing well out of the way of the mic being thrown everywhere by Roger Daltrey (you can it flashimg past him) and a Keith Moon classic - taping his headphones on and knocking a cymbal of and then Pete Townhend smahing it with his guitar - classic! Saw them in Ausralia once and it's one of my favourite concerts. Thanks again!

The problem with the voting system these days is that it is mainly theatre to give us hope. All of the parties are working for the same corporate elites, it's these that need dealing with. "If voting made any difference they wouldn't let us do it" - Mark Twain

I would love you to go down "The Who"'s rabbit hole. They have such wonderful songs. We took our 11year old daughter to a Who concert back in 1991. Such energy! You should watch the movie Tommy. It is a rock opera they wrote. It's pretty amazing! As always, great rection! God Bless!🐢

This tune is part of what was initially intended as a double album where the recording/writing sessions began in1970.."Lifehouse/Whos Next", is perhaps Rock n Rolls' first experimental journey into synthesizer territory..Pete Townsend suffered a tyoe of mental breakdown during recording, and considered "Who's Next" a failure..Yet, the album achieved gold record status in 1971-(year of original release.)..
Who's Next, is an album where every song on it is exceptional..
There is far more interesting "stuff" involving The Who, and will be great research for you both..✌️

Chystal clear color film quality & audio pre-dates 1978 by almost fifty years by that year of 1978.
The Beatles "GET BACK" (2021) Alan Jackson documentary color footage is entirely from what was shot in January 1969 and onwards "fer chrissakes"!!

You are correct, some people get richer and richer, but only on paper/stockmarket, that doesn't make you a better person.
The real problem starts when people who got famous/rich think that their opinion is more important than the opinion of the
old retired bricklayer in the pub.

You hit on it. What this song is really about: voting changes nothing. George Carlin said it best, the table is tilted the game is rigged. Voting just gives us the illusion that we have a choice. We don't. The new boss is always the same as the old boss.

If you want to have fun with a song by The Who you should check out "Squeeze Box". But if you want to get a little rougher, I recommend the hole album "Live At Leeds" -> thats a documentation of Rock history from them. Anyway, I'll stay tuned and thank you for sharing.
