@manny_nuff / Phil Osopher Either you are a complete cynic (and not worth arguing with) or a Russian troll trying to get folks to not vote so "your" candidate, tRump, will win.
A journalist once asked John Entwistle, the bass player, about his always standing still during shows, and he replied that someone had to keep still to anchor everything down, otherwise the other three would fly off the stage.
At least he helped that way, but it was Pete who had to hold the rhythm of the band together because of Moon and Entwistle dominating the melody of the song, IMO.
Yeah it don't come across on the video but this band would be pinning that audience to the back wall with the volume, they were one of the loudest bands. Keith's drums have lost out in this mix for sure, you're also only hearing the top end of Entwistle's bass too, it would have been like thunder between him and Moon's drums, they would have been hammering that crowd in the chest. Those original fans must be suffering severe tinnitus by now. Check out 'My generation' to really hear some of John's bass runs.
This was an actual live performance, so it's not mixed like the studio version. Each of the four are legends: John Entwhistle on bass, Keith Moon on drums, Roger Daltrey on vocals, and Pete Townsend, guitar and songwriter.
The bass player, John Entwhistle, was one of the pioneers of how to play the bass like a lead instrument! His nickname was "Thunder Fingers" for a reason!! 💙💙💙💙
They were known for ripping up all their instruments at the end of the show. Townsend went through so many guitars. If you want vocals and drums, react to Love Rein O'er Me, and stay all the way to the end. Moon the Loon goes off at the end.
"The Loon" was known for exploding toilet bowls in hotel rooms also. I guess that was funny as long as you shared, "Uncle Ernie's" taste for vodka and bank account. You definitely didn't want to rent the room below them that night.
I saw them last year for the 1st time. Was kinda thinking the voices would be older, and wasn’t expecting an entire orchestra on stage. Every song was PERFECT! One of my top 5 concerts I’ve ever been to.
They called Keith Moon "Loony Moonie." He was a crazy beast on the drums (R.I.P) ; John Entwistle on bass was known as "The Ox", (R.I.P.), Roger Daltry is the only person who can do their main vocals. Pete Townshend on guitar was known for his antics and "the windmill" with which he tore his rotator cuff. The Who were multi-talented for sure. Don't know how this was accomplished in this live show, but the keyboards are isolated synthesizers "between 2 organs" by Pete Townshend. They were also known for smashing their instruments on stage for fun, occasionally. LOL

I queued all night for tickets to see The Who at the Newcastle Odeon, England in 1973 and it was one of the most exciting concerts I ever saw - my ears were still ringing the next morning!
In listening to the Who for close to 50 years now I have never before heard pointed out the distinction between Pete's most animated guitar player ever and John's most stoic bass player EVER! This, after I'd all but given up expecting to hear interesting new insights. Excellent!
the Rock and Roll Circus version is among the greatest live performances ever captured on film. It was so good the Rolling Stones didn't release the show until years later.
That bass player was voted rock bassist of the century by some publication around 2000. He pretty much played lead bass. I saw them live and when he really showed off, I said to my friend, I would have bet that was impossible.
If recommend go to CZcams and check out John Entwistle’s bass lines to Won’t Get Fooled Again there. John’s bass got separated from the full band mix. Watch that and see why his bass playing was always unique and damn powerful. His nickname was THE OX !!

Late to your channel and late to commenting on your reactions. I like your insights so I am going back over past videos to find songs I tend to favor. I saw The Who about 16 years ago and they were old with a different drummer. That is how you know a true group of dedicated musicians. The Real deal.
John Entwhistle who played bass for The Who also died a few years ago. He was in the Who from the beginning, He is this video, dark hair and quiet. He was an outstanding base player who played very like it was just a regular guitar. He was known as "The Quiet One.' Until he started playing. He smiled at me during a concert in NC..Most big bands never make it to the carolinas. The Bass player wrote "Boris the spider' which is on Last Generation which is their first album. Boris the spider is on You Tube. Pete was probably high.
Hahahaha. Everybody is like Wait for it at 10:33 this was good conceet footage and been ages since I saw it, but that studio version with that Yell is amazing. The Who was probably my first favorite band before I got into Van Halen. Loved their stuff. The energy was just amazing. And this has to be like 74??? 77???? Just rocking!
Pete Townshend used a Lowery organ of that era, a model which had a built in echo effect. He then ran it through one of his effect pedals to get the sound. This was in the studio of course. Live it was a backing track recording of that studio work, that I believe drummer Keith Moon activated with a switch. Moon wore the headphones so he could clearly hear the recorded underlying organ riff, and could keep time with it. They did something similar with Baba O’Riley, from the same album and period. That’s what I’ve read and remember anyway.
The intro keyboard sound was a Hammond organ through an ARP synth and then sequenced. Basically just holding down the chords and then letting the sequencer do the rest.
The keyboard part was created on a Lowery organ running through either a VCS3 or an ARP 2600 (both listed in the album notes). And the keyboard is ACTUALLY what was on the Demo tape of the song, which they couldn’t better in the studio, which also explains the unseen Acoustic guitar heard clearly during the section leading up to Keith beating the sh!t out of the drums.
interesting thing about Keith Moon is, unlike a lot of drummers, he didn't use hi-hats. All of his rhythm came from either ride bells or sweeping the crash. You'll also notice his toms go both directions, so he can do rolls either right of left-handed as he pleased.
Great review man.Ive just come across your channel and love your reactions bro great work. That video was shot very shortly before Keith Moon died and honestly, he was a shadow of his former self at that time. If you want to hear his drumming at his apex, check out the album Live at Leeds or the Isle of Wight festival footage available on CZcams. That’s Keith at his best.
I was a kid when this was released. I listened to all kinds of stuff. Grandparents big bands on one side, country gospel on the other. Mom was an Elvis fan. Dad was Marty Robbins. I heard this on the radio and it was all over. The first song that totally blew me away. Been a rocker ever since.
Keith Moon "the loon" one of the all-time great rock drummers. The instrument you can't figure out was one of the very first synthesizers. The Who were one of the greatest live bands of all time (and the loudest!), for a real treat try "Young man blues" live at the Isle of Wight.
They have a movie (musical), of one of their albums, it's called Tommy, about a deaf dumb and blind kid, the lead singer Roger Daltrey is the one portraying the kid. The rest of the band and some other musicians aper on it, you should check it out sometime, its mind blowing
What makes this video great is that you picked the perfect video to review, back in the day when they were young and the song was new-ish. I feel like you see the best performances when the song is new and they haven’t played it a thousand times already.
The keyboards were taped prior to the recording, both in the studio and here, live. Neil Peart praised Keith Moon as one of his inspirations in drumming.
The beginning of the song was a sampled keyboard which was a fairly newish thing back in the '70's, but originally played by Pete Townshend in the studio. Hence the headphones that Keith is wearing. Keith was bad with dealing with sequencers, so they gave him the headphones to keep him in time. the Who in their prime was a locomotive. A machine. An unstoppable force that would crush you, kick the shit out of you and have you coming back for more. There was no one better live in their prime. Maybe Queen? Or Kiss for the sheer showmanship. And John Entwistle is regarded as one of the most influential and musical bass players of his or any other era. There was really no one doing what he invented in the mid '60's turning the bass into a lead instrument. If there's a Mt. Rushmore for bass players, he would definitely occupy a spot.
I am loving your reaction to that classic Who dynamic of super-hyper lead guitar/bandleader Pete Townsend vs. rocksteady (but playing his ass off) bassist John Entwhistle. Vocalist Roger Daltrey is perhaps my favorite classic rock vocalist - it takes skills to do that iconic final scream at the end of this song. And yeah, as fun as it is to see these guys performing live in their heyday, the sound/mix on this performance is not of the best. But that gives you an excuse to play through the entire Who's Next album, which is absolutely awesome and great to listen to all in one go.
Yeah, u should've went with the studio version on this classic. Other observations: John Entwhistle was one of the best bassists in rock history ever. A monster. The iconic Geddy Lee agreed, hands down. Keith Moon was spastically fantastic on skins. You're right. The soundboard mix on this should be way better. Those keys from the get-go should be louder. Roger Daltry's scream at the end of the keyboard bridge is one of the top 2 or 3 rock screams of all-time. All done, carry on. Check out the studio version when u get a chance on your own for sure. Peace, man.
Possibly the BIGGEST influence on the guys in Rush. Lots of great songs to react to. And if you ever watch any of the CSI shows, listen for The Who at the beginning.
