Lady Bunny breaks down the difference between "Drag Race" and the world of drag
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 02. 2018
- Lady Bunny discusses her first time in drag, rooming with RuPaul, sheep in the drag community, fans often limited perspective (but vocal criticism) of the art form, queens receiving death threats and the difference between competing on "RuPaul's Drag Race" and existing in the world of drag.
I really wish Bunny would be in that fourth permanent judges spot. She just would contribute so much. Imagine her clowning these queens. The level of humor would be so elevated!
Tainted Life yes. Definitely.
It was called Drag U........nightmarish. Not really a true judge though. Love bunny til the end.
Exactly, I can't believe Santino is a judge and not Lady Bunny
If you watch this interview an just listen to Bunny talk, you know she is simply just not interested in judging on a reality* tv show competition. Yes I also think she would be hilarious an also give good honest critiques, but I also know its just not her thing. She don't care about that, she said a long time ago in an interview that Ru asked her an she declined. She said yes to the Drag U thing cuz it was different from Drag Race.
She doesn't want to. I don't even think she enjoyed DragU. She seems like the type of person who enjoys live drag and dislikes over-produced TV drag.
She's a lot more inclusive than RuPaul. Lady Bunny has tons of perspective and understands that drag is done in so many ways.
I actually think Ru's probably just as inclusive personally, but she's more business focused. For all we know, Bunny's deal is to say the things Ru can't.
JohnBelz LMAO
No he doesn’t
People can be gay and conservative, but it's a bit dumb
@@elenamari7355 Although, Ru's opinions on the trans community is HER own, so not exactly true.
EVERY profession is nearly fictional when depicted on TV
I love Bunny reading Ru for judging queens on their drag when Ru hasn't got up in drag herself without someone else doing it for her in 15 years 😂😂
I concur. Lady Bunny, among others as well, should be a judge. If not for the internet I wouldn’t know who is Coco Peru. She came into my feed, so I’ve ‘fallen and can’t get up’ and don’t want to. I follow her now and discovered I really ‘prefer’ the one woman shows! I hope all of the one woman show genre comes into my feed! ❤️❤️❤️😎 love to see Lady Bunny one day soon 🙏🏻
I love what she said about lace front wigs. Its isolating young trans people and people wanting to do Drag , the shallow people in the community who might shade them for having a cheap wig.
Child please RuPaul doesn't need to do her makeup now. We see from the Nelson videos that Ru had been doing her makeup along with Lady way back in the day. Not saying Ru is like Naomi Campbell, but an example is Naomi Campbell, who does not do her makeup now although she used to back in the days when she was an unknown.

I love when Bunny reads RuPaul for anything because she knows allllll the tea
Lady bunny’s first exposure to drag was when she saw a pterodactyl and couldn’t tell if it was male or female
🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was MY pterodactyl, and it was hermaphrodite! LOL!!
dead
Lady Bunny basically interviewed herself
Which is how all her interviews go. It's the Bunny way!
The guy only asked 1 question over and over again.
The interviewer got a solid... 30 second of air? Over the whole interview lol
She's super entertaining though. I would love to interview her, easy peasy.
loooool
He asks Bunny one question and she talks for thirty minutes straight. I love it lol
Glad she did because obvs not a lot of prep went into that interview, the nerve of introducing her as an understated queen and not adding to the joke, if it was a joke....
Thank god he's bad
Very on brand
At least Lady Bunny can remember their names.
she's younger than Ru so, you know
@@quangminhtran2916 Just for 2 years. Ru looks older than she is. (Out of drag)
@@guidotorres6124 probably because Bunny works with most of them outside of drag race many times so she might've remembered their names better than Ru, who only interacted with them during the show and not outside like Bunny does
@@quangminhtran2916 True.
Ru used to know all their names, but we're on like the 14th season now and that's over 100 queens. You hit a point where you just plain can't be friends with all of them anymore.
“I am a 55 year old man. I don’t get paid without makeup! “
I love a straight-talking performer.
My love for Bunny knows no bounds. I was lucky enough to catch her in 1984 at Backstreet Atlanta, months before she and Ru and Larry made the trek to NYC. I said "join me for a few drinks?" and she very graciously told me to put that 15 bucks (remember, this was when drinks were cheap) in the tip jar for the bartender, and introduced me to Charlie Brown, saying "this Southern boy was brought up right, he knows how to treat a Lady." That's class. It's a moment I will never forget.

Where did she say this?
Pouring all the T at the party, Lady Bunny. She’s legit iconic and legendary and a class act with humor and brains. She needs her own show on tv too.
amandamusic80 yes!
i loved her drag race review, i think she used to do one.
God, yes we need the Bun on TV. She's so busy doing other stuff I don't know how she would have time for a regular show. Maybe a quarterly hour-long special? It could be a dragstravaganza show with guest stars, a chat segment...
amandamusic80 and also a politicized queen
Her song is awesome
Bunny is a genius hidden under 15 wigs
She truly is...and that's what makes her so disarming. She'll grab your attention with crass jokes but without you knowing she's somehow taught you something deep and profound. She doesn't take herself seriously and thus can call everybody else that does out on their bullsh!t.
I am so glad he beamed down from the Starship Enterprise to interview Lady Bunny
Lol. I literally just asked why she was being interviewed by a starfleet science officer.
James Norris biiiiiiiiiiitch🤣🤣🤣
Thank you! From the cups to his neckline this is just too good. 😂
YESSS hahahaha
James Norris Hahahaha I thought the same thing!!
Thank goodness for Lady BunBun. I am getting tired of people saying that every drag queen needs to be one thing. Drag is many things to many people. If we try and put it into a box we're going against what drag is all about.
Bunny should be more celebrated than she is. ❤️ 🐰
Bravo!
if anyone can read Rupaul it's lady bunny!
Call Me Witcher she should! They’ve been together since the beginning.
They probably know each others secrets lol

Y'all she wasn't throwing shade at Pearl saying she's not talented. All Lady Bunny is saying is, Pearl isn't a stage performer. Pearl has her own gig.
Pearl is my favorite and talented ah! But do I remember even one performance of hers? 🤔 Naah 😓
I am so happy this conversation happened. It totally boggles my mind that people completely miss the point of drag. When you wake up in the morning and put on your "woman" clothes, "man" clothes, "I'm a gay person" clothes, "INSERT WHATEVER" clothes, YOU ARE IN DRAG. Drag for me has always been about conscious play with IDEAS ABOUT WHO WE ARE rather than who we actually are which extends far beyond any label. I'm excited for boy and man drag and weirder non gender conforming drag to become a thing because I think it will create space for us to move further out of the prison of identity.
The other point mentioned in this video that I want to applaud: HOW IS THIS COMMUNITY SO VICIOUS?!
Queer spaces are a perfect example of internalized hatred and abuse. After being misunderstood and abused by mainstream society, now we mistreat and slander individuals within our own "community" for being different...or rather different than what is expected.
I also think the obsession with female illusion is indeed a clear sign of just how deeply embedded people are in the idea of what a woman is. We hold the people who we consider to be " biological women" to the same ridiculous standards.
lgbt is all about labels lmao
You make such a good point. I used to be a married woman & mother, now I am a cis-gendered heterosexual monogamous breeder-female. I was surprised to hear all the vicious back-biting between LGBTQ - LMNOP people, and I was relieved to hear Lady Bunny say that was mostly a result of the “reality TV” format. I think that people need to just be nice to each other, and that applies to everyone in XYZ land.
“I identify as TRANS FAT.” Lady Bunny is so smart and funny. (And I really like Trixie Mattel.)
you put it so right. Due to my addictions I was dressing in basic rags just for comfort and I didnt feel myself. As ive tried to recover and pursue in my journey, I finally dug out of my closet some leather effect leggings and a chained belt I got from Camden market (which I was always too scared to wear) and when I put them on, I felt like "me". Whatever "me" is, I felt good dressing the way I want to and most important of all expressing myself and my inner "Punk" :')
I feel this so hard! I'm transmasc but I didn't realize til I was 16. Throughout school I dressed hyper feminine- crochet flowers, frills, miniskirts, and tons of pink. When I finally came out I got questioned so much- especially by trans guys 😔 and I didn't feel comfortable answering because I liked the way that I dressed but knew it wasn't my normal. It was actually drag race that gave me the confidence to ever dress super feminine because when I was little I insisted on wearing boys clothes. So now I just refer to me in the old photos as 'her and she' like it's a character and tell people "that skirt is adorable! But I don't want it on me!"
Even though I was steeped on masc/fem ideals because I lived in a conservative area, I just never understood how to comply. So in my confusion and love for drag I just went to extremes. It was like comphet w/o the sadness.
I love how the interviewer gets cracked up at times! Bunny is such a great queen! She's like my dear old, old, old alcoholic, old, old skanky, goddess aunt. I wish she would read this so she'd know how much I love her!!!

Sasha Velor also was very different compared to the "expected" pagent drag. It's the only thing, that I don't like about Michelle Visage judging drag race is her focus on everything being "Glamour Drag" and if anyone doesn't follow that cookie cutter gets marked down. The one I really got angry about was Katia and a Hello Kitty challenge where Michelle ripped her outfit, but it actually was a Japanese character on the front of the outfit, she just couldn't see it and it ended up sending Katia home. RuPaul is looking like Mrs Roper from Three's Company. Loved it Bianca rimmed a wasp nest.
SO TIRED of Michelle Visage's limited views.
I hate drag. I love Lady Bunny, Divine, and Varla Merman. With these three, the drag is the least interesting thing about them.
Yall should remember that Bianca indeed was criticized for wearing harsh make up especially in the eye but child Trixie came in . Bianca became just simple decent rich unclockable rich white woman and we all know she is not even white lol
I think that Bianca was the first queen on drag race to bring back that signature New York, clownish, theatrical makeup look, since all we had been seeing before her season was fishy and peagent makeup (maybe with the exception of Sharon). So when she came on stage the first time, even the judges commented on how harsh her makeup looked. Then Trixie came along and took clown makeup to a whole other different place, and queens are now starting to go beyond that fishy look much more often on the show.

Everybody talking about Milk not getting critized about her drag need to know that before All Stars she actually got critized a lot for her "non-feminine" and glamorous looks, not for her attitude. All this happened after the interview, Lady Bunny was talking about the hate she got on s6 for her looks.
Seriously its like people only watched all stars and not the normal show

Uhh
I'm a simple person - I see 'Lady Bunny' and i subscribe! It's a travesty to me that queens like Bunny and Jackie Beat aren't asked to judge on Drag Race. I'd much prefer that than the usual parade of Hollywood idiots with something to promote.
BB it’s because they don’t want to be on drag race. They have been asked and respectfully declined.
That's only partially true. Bunny *was* on Drag U, so it is not necessarily accurate that Bunny did not want to have any association with DR. As for Jackie, I think the fact that the original idea for "Drag Race" was hers and registered with the WGA...and then the WoW rich kids & Rupaul swooped in with a similar concept probably chaps Jackie's weenie. Plus, when has anyone heard Jackie Beat say anything particularly complimentary about the show? Outside of Bob & perhaps Bianca, Jackie has never said much about anyone who has competed on the show.
Finally, from what I have read over the years about the show, the reason there is no drag performer on the judging panel is because Rupaul refuses to have another drag queen at the desk as far as DR is concerned. Drag U was a different case because Rupaul was never in drag on that show--part of the reason why it was cancelled if we are all honest...
I agree! Lipsynca, Coco Peru! They also are legends and perhaps they don’t want to associate with the show. Or maybe as someone else mentioned here, Ru doesn’t want to ever be upstaged. The people he invites back compliment him but never out do him.
Vanessa Hudgikins from Disneyland is now a slinky wearer of sequins and VERY into vogueing right now so naturally a perfect judge.
Bunny has stated that she doesn't want to have to judge other drag queens; she makes this pretty clear in this interview.
She did Drag U because she was judging women. AND she's admitted that she never even went on to watch the series lol
The reason Bunny's not a judge on DR is because Ru probably knows the power of only having one queen on the panel.
I feel like the one who's worst about "boy drag" is Michelle. It drives me nuts. I love the variety shown on drag race. Like if specific challenge calls for glam, pageant looks, sure. But damn, let a queen have a look. I would love a bearded queen!
I love bunny she’s so experienced that she can go on forever and she knows what’s she’s talking about ❤️

“There were always different kinds of drag, some would be trans performers who did drag...”
Wish she would tell her Gurl Ru that.

YEEEES LADY BUNNY! TEACH THE CHIL'REN!
Why is Lady Bunny never been RPDR’s judge? She’s amazing! 🐰💄✨
i never understood that either... Who would be a better judge for drag race than rupaul's drag mother?
She was on Drag U tho
She declined, and if you really listened to the interview you'd hear unequivocally that she's not interested in judging on RPDR because of the manufactured "storyline", the weird standards, too much preference for pageantry, the restrictions (highlighter, lashes, et al) and so on. I doubt she will ever be a judge because of her views on Drag Race and its production team.
Does anyone watch the entire video before commenting? Bunbun doesn't want to be I the show. She doesn't want to judge queens. Drag U was different, it was judging women.
She has been
"I'll have you know, I identify as TRANS FATS!!" Oh Bunbun, we love you so much lol.
Lady Bunny must know the impact she played alongside Ru as new-wave queens, she seems fairly humble here about herself but it seems her perceptions of her life and career in drag don't recognize that her contributions, style, and personality have made ripples in what drag is.
Oh honey, her ripples are still being felt everywhere. Didn't an earthquake happen in Japan recently or something?

drag is real theatre, not instagram. Queens have personalities, not fkg snapchat. So happy to have discovered drag in 1986 thru Wigstock. I've been watching Ru and Bunny for a looooong time.

What a pleasant surprise! A nice long, quietly paced interview with an intelligent and articulate performer and expert on the scene! I had no idea Lady Bunny was so much more than a foul mouthed dropper of one liners and f-bombs. (Forgive me! :-D ). Now I really, really like her. Thank you, guys.
This was so necessary! Love Lady Bunny. Glad she mentioned Drew Droege. I think about that kinda often, people forget that there’s a whole world of drag, and that RPDR is a TV show simply showing a slice of it. Not everyone wants to be on RPDR, and just because they do drag shouldn’t feel obliged!
Can we all just agree that young people need to sit down, listen more, give their opinion a little bit less often and with more respect and information?
If they would ask people would be glad to tell them but they just diss right away.
Er, it's a reality television show and a competition. The entire point is to be judged. This odd 'blame a millennial' thing is pretty weird. Most of the people on the RPDR sub are older people who can go into clubs and have seen it.

I love that Lady has her gripes with RPDR and even Ru himself, but she's supportive of the queen's, works with them, DJs at some of Ru's events, and can remember the past queens BETTER THAN RU CAN. an icon. (this sounds like I'm dissing Ru, but that's not my intent. oops.)

It's called arm chair thinking. You know, you just sit and judge things that you don't do. Lady Bunny, I've been to a short show in Denver and I love you for saying that we are not all meant to be the same. That has been keeping me alive for the last few years.
That was soooo much T!! Lady Bunny saying that Ru does not make her outfits, does not do her own hair and makeup or accessaries. But she judges other people who do all that themselves. I realize Ru has worked long and hard and deserves to be where she is at. Now she can afford the luxury of having things done for her and done well. Shout out Delta and Raven. Lots of Love and kindness.
UncleAndy46511 plus the work required to do that day after day for two months would be exhausting. A show needs people to manage the costumes, hair and makeup. It’s a professional operation because it needs to look professional on air.
About time Bunny gets her place in Rupaul's dragrace. I want to hear her opinion....,who gives a shit about what Ross Matthews or Carson Kressley have to say. Really.
oh my god. Amen to that! Especially Ross! like what qualifies you to be a judge on a drag show? You were just an intern on a popular show and a guest on chelsea lately. None of that qualifies in my eyes!
Ru asked her a long time ago and she declined. She’s said in interviews that she has no interest in it. She did do drag u though.
The more I see Lady Bunny, the more I realize that Trixie is slowly turning into Lady Bunny 😂😂 or at least, adopting her look! I'm not mad at it tho!

I had to come back and rewatch this during these miserable times. I needed joy in my life. Thanks Bunny 💕😷😍
"I jumped in a horse and buggy..." OMG lol
She's so underrated as a drag performer. Also sidenote: funny that RuPaul said he put Bunny in drag for her first time (during Bunny's roast episode of All Stars). Doesn't seem to be the case. lol.
Neither are lying. Ru was first queen to paint her face. Her first drag mom only gave her a wig and dress. No lashes no make up
Ok, about minute 21...I really like the guy interviewing Bunny, he's attentive, he's not putting himself in front of everything, and all. Buuut...you really did ask the same question for the 3rd time now just in a different way. No hate, just trying to be constructive ^^ All in all I really love this interview! Good questions and Bunny is fantastic! I never knew her really except from Drag Racers talking about her. Like it. She's smart and she knows what she's talking about. And she's funny of course :D
Watching this back from 2024, it is wild to me that the biggest drama drag culture was encountering 5 years ago was Milk's androgyny.
I think Milk doing "guy drag" is absolutely AMAZING because if anyone can pull off that look, it's Milk. I hope he continues doing that and my hopes is he becomes more of the, "King of the Drag Queens," type of thing.
Drag king!
To be fair, these are the girls Ru is casting so in a way Ru really does control the image of drag in a sense.
AntonyS0lis BS try watch dragula
Wade Howie without Drag Race ,shows like Dragula or And drag based shoes wouldn’t ever even be possible, so all thanks to mama ru for taking drag out there, yes other drag icons helped with underground publicity but Rupaul introduced drag to television
Alex Batruiz I'm just saying my drag Not on drag race so that why I defended other side I'm just saying dragula girls won't get on drag race if so they get kicked off or burff from what they see they would do
Alex Batruiz plus I didn't know about drag race intil I watch dragula I thought dragula was the first drag show
Wade Howie what do you mean "BS try watch dragula", that doesn't even discount my point. My point is is that lady bunny is upset with what drag has become and unfortunately blames Instagram and all these other social media platforms except the real platform to blame is RuPaul's Drag Race. As I said Ru casts the girls and so controls the narrative, that's just fact. I understand Dragula is a show as well however, Dragula queens are not being tossed into the mainstream media so they don't affect the narrative that tells young up and coming queens HOW to look or HOW to dress or be. As of right now, RPDR is the mainstream GOAL.
P.s. I'm not hating RPDR, I absolutely love it and have been watching since season 1
This interview was everything and the questions for her were really well thought out!
Excellent interview. Lively and full of substance the whole way through.
"Develop your own thing" Never has a truer word been spoken. That will be refreshing to see.
Bunny needs a judge spot on RPDR ... love her energy and i love when Bianca imitates her. She is too funny 😂
Super interesting what she says about what a narrow view RPDR gives including the desire for drama and gossip that isn’t even what it would normally be about.
This is amazing, love love love to you! Thank you for the priceless gift of wisdom!
