Fun fact: As a subtle nod to Games Workshop's original logo, the lettering used in the coat of arms for the Rogue Trader house Von Valancius in the video game Rogue Trader uses the same font. The house coat of arms is two V's in the same style as GW's original logo.

Character advancement that allows for Stat increases with caps on those stats is a fundamental part of the GW skirmish games Necromunda, Gorka Morka and Mordheim.
modern necromunda even keeps the four different "leadership" stats!
I always thought that Gorkamorka was just a single word, I could be wrong, often I am like I was with Slaan earlier because it is apparently Slann . I live and apparently don’t learn…

I love that the plural for "Manfish" is "Menfish".
Avarice and Hunger make a lot of sense as alignments. Especially in a game with dragons and wild animals.
Yeah, I was surprised how well "Avarice" and "Hunger" work as alignments. Not every creature is necessarily motivated by nobility or wickedness. And "Neutral" doesn't always carry the same connotation as "wants money" or "HONGRI".
Hunger kind of carried forward for the Ogre Kingdoms in 6th through to 8th as well.
As a person in my mid-sixties, this brought back so many memories of the early days of RPGs.
Hey snipe and wib, weird outta place comment but here goes, it’s been 5 years since I first painted warhammer with the know no fear starter set and did terribly painted marines and yet I felt so good about them I posted them on twitter and tagged you guys and I remembered wib responded to it saying they were good looking boys, since then alot has happened and last year I rekindled my love for warhammer and redescovered my favourite space marine Legion the blood angles and even 5 years later I’m still listening to your videos in the background as I’m now painting the red of the sons of sanguinius instead of the blue of the smurfy boys and I just wanted to thank you guys for sticking around long enough for me to leave and come back.

No, the names are reference to The Great Escape. The three names are the codenames of the tunnels.

In all seriousness though, the phrase "Any Tom, Dick or Harry" to refer to a bunch of generic people predates The Great Escape by centuries.
I like that the scenarios for the Characters book use "Ath Cliath" as a town name, which is just the Irish name for Dublin
These ancient models always have a weird charm. Like they are objectively bad, but also really neat
Very much objects of their time haha . You’re right about the primitive charm they have though .
There's a simple and clean kind of a feel to models of this era. They're something you get with a single glance, no pretensions of anything else. There is a charm to that, but the clearness is also just enjoyable in a way. Honest.
They are kind of like the lead equivalent of the rough and sketchy rpg art from way back, such as seen here. Sure it's technically piddly compared to modern work, but it also feels approachable. It's just a thing someone made, an effort. No attempt to make it something fancy or bigger.
Once people stop regularly using models they gain a certain charm. It's why fantasy models go for like 5x prices on eBay, and why gw is ruining that by bringing back the exact same kits in Old World...

I really enjoy the simple design of the early models, as they had distict silhouettes which could be identified on the fly from 6 feet away on a table top (unlike today's models; looking at you Primaris Marines)
The fact the sculptors were creating architypes of races and classes (a wizard had a pointy hat and a beard etc...) meant they had the freedom to create unique and more grounded models. I think this is why games like Mordhiem are still as popular with the gaming community, as they feel both fantastic and grounded at the same time.
Similarly, like the early computer games of the time, with their basic graphics, it left alot to the players imagination which allowed people to imprint their own stories into the models.
As much as I love the modern versions of these models, there will always be a special corner of my heart for these older sculpts.
16:49 I know demon and daemon are supposed to be pronounced the same, but when I say that I started a new daemon on my Linux box, I pronounce it differently so that people don't get confused and want to *exorcise* my machine. This pronunciation, which Wikipedia lists as a valid pronunciation for "Daemon (computing)", carries over to when I read Warhammer.

Love seeing elements at the start of Warhammer that help make WFRP the flavour that it is (Critical hits)
judging from how stones and bodys get mangled by even slow flowing rivers and channels those minis in the channel most likely turned into rounded zink lead pebbles....that means if you find a lead pebble in the area you technically can use it in a game of warhammer since it is an actual official miniature with rules, just a damaged one.
I honestly didn't expect this video to get me a little teary eyed at the end.

Oh yeah, I remember when the Warhammer 25th anniversary issue of White Dwarf came out featuring the revamped Harry model--I think it even contained an updated version of that Ziggurat of Doom scenario, too! Having only been into Warhammer for a year or two at the time, kid me felt like I was glimpsing ancient mysterious relics, haha.
Splendid episode. I'd love to see an episode dedicated to the history of games workshop history as a company. I found especially the "backstory" section in this video interesting and entertaining.

That original 'if you dont like it change it, and if you dont have it proxy it' attitude was why i loved old Warhammer, and why i dislike how new Warhammer is presented.

I love the look and feel of these oldhammer rules and minis, thank you for a great reveiw.
I started with 1st Edition and 2nd Edition. I got a strategy banmed world wide and lead thw change in 3rd Edition. In 2nd edition you could equip Watgear. War gear was not limited to Race. The deployment was simple with 12 to 24 inches on the deployment. Eldar scouts,on Jet,Bikes with Power Fists. You setup 2x3 squads of scouts in the non deployment on the enemy side. You could wipe out all enemy vehicles.
My Warhammer army from this time was Skeletons, but Japanese Skeletons. QT Models had a range of Samurai and such like, and produced alternate heads.
I loved this edition.

I'm honestly surprised how much of Warhammer 1st Edition still exists across the various games today. For reference, Ld, Int, Cl, and WP are still actively in use with GW systems, thanks to Necromunda's current edition, and honestly the entire bar looks quite similar to an underhive ganger of the Houses.

This is honestly pretty similar to modern day warhammer, I've only had the chance to play 2 matches of AoS and it's genuinely shockingly close to the stripped back version I'm being taught (we're forgo-ing warscrolls etc for the meantime so I can grasp the bare basics, then slowly introducing more and more mechanics until I'm playing the full game. I'm essentially playing the tutorial)

Excellent, very detailed video. A fascinating look back. Another book that would be of interest to you is "Warhammer siege", as it also contains a lengthy section on sieges in 40k, essentially making it the precursor to city fight etc. If you want, I can lend one to you.

The release of this and 2ed were gamechangers. A miniature fantasy wargamer's Woodstock. I have very recently used 1ed rpg rules for dungeon crawling. The lack of charts, lore, and the prescriptive approach which was to come is immensely liberating. Its surprising how quickly and effectively the imagination fills in the blanks.

Personal I love it, 1 brass = loaf of bread, mug of beer etc.
1 silver = dinner, room for the night etc
1 gold = more cash than a normal person will ever see
Kind of floored how strikingly similar the basics of these combat rules are to modern AoS/40K, like it is recognizably warhammer from the beginning and I think that’s neat

I am actually amazed with how recognisable the rules were to modern warhammer, you rarely see that with a franchise that old just look at the first edition of D&D.
I was amazed with how similar the roleplay part of the system was to the later warhammer fantasy roleplay system. I feel like you could easily this WFRP 0 edition. I don't know if you ever looked at the first edition of fantasy roleplay but it is very similar, just more fleshed out.

Does anyone else feel a little sad that we didn't get a reprint of this over Rogue Trader? PS The Goblin Wars are a refrence to a two lines in The Hobbit though funnily they kept changing the cause each edition as they weren't certain if they should keep it in or not, the best version is also the origin/first apperance of Gromm The Puanch with the war being over a bar fight between goblins and dwarfs over if Bugmens or Old Sam's Brown was best.

This video was neither too long, nor too short. It was exactly as long as it needed to be.
29:20 I did work out how the currency system works (and it does make more sense laid out on a chart.) there are three coins: Crowns (Gold), Shillings (Silver), and Pennies (Brass). There are 20 shillings in a crown, and 12 pennies in a shilling (which means that a crown has 240 pennies). The format for writing how much cash one has is written like "2 1/2", which translates to 2 crowns, 1 shilling, and 2 pennies (gold in front, first half of the fraction is shillings, and the second half is pennies).
Hope that helps anyone looking into this version of the game!
