Boulder is a special place that way.
😂only compared to Boulder. Bend is like an I-70 Colorado ski town without the good snow. White AF, trailheads packed full of sprinter vans, a mess of road construction, NIMBY-ethos reigns supreme. That’s just the town, the Cascades and high desert are sublime.

Bend was a sweet little town 40+ years ago and the sports (biking, skiing, fishing…) were accessible to pretty much anyone who could carve out a little recreation time. Now the sports have price tags that start at $5000 each. The area is now populated by those who participate in the sports and those who serve those who participate. The latter can’t participate. They don’t have enough money.
“Take those bottle cages off” is the perfect line…..
I have to say when I see a dude with no bottle cages and no fanny pack it's game on. No one is out there like that unless they think they're fast

Oregon love their rope tows. Some slopes on Mt. Hood still have them.

Thanks for all the props re: Bend and also the Willamette Valley. But I can not believe you didn’t climb Hwy 242 to McKenzie Pass. When done from the west side it’s ~4,000’ of gain. And it’s closed to cars at this time of year!

With Smith Rock just north of Bend I would imagine there are a bunch of rock climbers living in Bend. I did river rafting on the Deschutes river 28 years ago. It was great.

Speaking of Mancebo and Bend's brewpub vibe, worth (pun intended) noting that Worthy Brewing owner financed doping controls for Cascade Classic one year to confirm who he believed would DNS for the master's race. Worked like a charm.
Lets get you a drafting team for these KOMs. I'm a big tall dude and can pull hard as heck for the first 3 or 4 minutes. Then we need someone who can do the next 15 minutes. Sagan didn't make the olympics so we could get him.

my vote for next climb is the clingman's dome from bottom of g-burg it's about 20 miles 4k elevation and is epic or pikes peak idk i will ask when is it good to dropbar pump the engine for climbing? hard grades or something long and drawn out? Good Luck Mr. Gaimon

I raced kayaks in Bend in the 90s, had friends that lived there then. Went back to ride and visit ten years ago and its not the same, most of my friends have moved. Big nope for anyone who knew it back when it was good.

In general Bend road riding is not that good. A ton of car traffic and just shallow climbs. Far better gravel and XC MTB riding.

Yeah I think Bend is a 6.5/10 for road cycling (the rides are good but there's just a few) and 11/10 for MTB. Does that feel right? If you know my MTB history I'm not qualified to judge
Through a series of bad decisions, I live in Boulder. I mountain biked in Bend a few years ago and my thought was, “wow, Bend is like Boulder if Boulder didn’t hate fun”
@@worstretirementever yep, for sure. Not even sure I'd give it a 6.5 for roadies almost all out/back without any real climbs in sight...exception being old Mckenzie hwy outa sisters . My roadie years were spent on the SF peninsula (old la honda, tunitas creek, et al) and that area is an 11/10 for roadies.
I don't think there's any good group rides in Oregon from what I can find...prove me otherwise?

Weird. Cycling, famous climbs and climbers, people who left Southern California, long time Bend cyclists.. Chris Horner doesn't get a mention? It's funny how many people live the grass is greener thing.. you go to Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and everyone is running from something and bringing whatever they are running from with you!! A bunch of people from Southern California exporting tiny bits throughout the country. I like Phil's tiny plates observation..if you want to move somewhere tour the city, no restaurants with tiny plates.. getting coffee and soy milk or almond milk are not on offer, good sign, nobody knows where an EV charging station is . good sign

Say what you want about Bend, or Boulder... but dude - you guys gotta single it up on the bike paths when passing strollers and going through tunnels. Not cool riding elitist style side-by-side on the Bend bike paths. You can do better.
