They do something similar to Flugtag in Japan called Bird Man Rally. The difference is that all the teams are actually serious. No silly parade floats falling off a cliff and silly dances. Also it's really impressive. They have both gliders and pedal-powered planes. The air time for the gliders is insane, like usually more than a minute.
nice! i gotta check that out.
The glide rates they achieve in that competition are hard to believe.
@@my_dear_friend_ I love when they're like 10 cm above the water, and show no signs of descending. They just keep going, losing like a cm per hundred meters flown.
@@NonEuclideanTacoCannonground effect in action it's basically floating on a bubble of high pressure air
Learn something new
Should add some wing tip wheels that drop off in flight, just like the U-2 Spy Plane! The Pseudo-Rivets was a nice touch!

we will send you an award...

OK YES!!! Please bring in more of that film. Having something like this in the flite test store would be amazing, providing that final step between foam board and Balsa construction. Learning to cover is a necessity for most balsa builds and being able to learn on something as forgiving and easily made as the flite test foam board sheets would be a God send.
You guys did an amazing job on that build I was part of the broadcast team for the Flugtag and got to see that bad boy in person.
I totally missed that it started at noon and was only a few hours long. I live less than an hour away and was going to come. Ugh... It looked like a lot of fun. Turn out looked pretty good also from what I could see in videos. Lots of people on boats and on the bridge.
I didn't realise it had already flown! where could I get the footage?
@@horndog252 There’s already some CZcams videos posted up. Just search for it and a few should pop up for ya!
@@horndog252 it will be airing on the 19th I believe on Red Bull, and other places.
@@VictoryAviation there was a really great turn out there and a lot of people and it was a great show.
Been seeing this channel grow for over 8 years now 🙂. It's amazing how you are all still just as happy and entertaining as you always were
these guys inspired me to become an engineer, ive been watching them since i was about 12, im 18 now and i start my undergraduates in aeronautical engineering next month. i dont know where i would be if i didnt start watching them
Thank you for making it possible!
Congratulations @tomo! Wish you all the best and thank you for being an inspiration to so many. :-)
@@FliteTestHello,I been subscribed since I made this chabnel, but watchd you 1 year before you made it.
I love your contet, especaly that Battelship video!
So yea,if you are taking sugestions, will you also build modern day fightergets as exsmaple mig-21,mig-31,F-22 raptor and F/A-18 Superhornet.
This are phew I would like to see,but it is your choice to build what you want,I was only sugesting.
Love your work and my end messeg is,keep going, your content is so high qvuality, this is an youtube gem!
YES PLEASE! bring covering material into the store.
I'd love to see you bring covering film to the store. Would certainly help with larger plane projects.
Meeting you guys was such an enjoyment! Glad I could save the wing for you guys! Such a fantastic day! you're genuine enjoyment for all of us competitors was simply amazing! Best of luck in all of your future endeavors! Ill come up and see that golf course sometime!
Please! I have been searching for covering material for months and months for something reasonable. Absolutely awesome design I'm sure yall are going to win!
In 1990 at work we were given access to a cnc pcb (printed circuit board ) router. It was so handy for making accurate tooling for our aerospace solar mirror project.
YES PLEASE CARRY THE COVERING!!
Good luck, guys! Looks like a winner!
Flite test thank you! For the last ten years, it brought me a new hobby and still you guys come up with content that's interesting, like this red bull flugtag challenge.
You guys are awesome! Best of luck at the Flugtag, hope is goes great.
It looks amazing you guys did a wonderful job thank you for sharing and good luck
Best of luck to the flight test crew. You guys and gals are such an inspiration to the modeling community! Keep it up! It's amazing that you have grown so much and come so far.
They won :) The event was yesterday afternoon.
I would buy covering film if you guys supply it
absolut great crew and perfect work💯.....thumbs up and greetings from Germany👍👍
Great job guys looking forward to next week.
Looks amazing.
Congratulations for the First overall win, second time! Fantastic result. But man, 51' CVG team. Whooooah!
Congrats on willing the 2023 Flugtag. I would love to see you guys break the record some day.
Congrats guys!
Good luck and I'm eager to see the result.
You guys have the coolest job on the planet! Keep up the great work!
I would absolutely love to see that film covering on the store
Yes, to covering!!
Looks super cool!
Definitely carry it!! The whole 3d print, ARF and foam plane thing has ruined building light, strong and good flying craft and I see many cases where blending old spar covering with modern building materials could greatly improve flight time/efficiency. Durability lower weight etc.
I'm in for the covering material. I'll order when it hits the store.
can't wait your entry is always my favorite
Yes! please stock that covering! God Bless!
I CANT WAIT to see this fly!
Yes bring on the covering!!!
You should add some vortex generators to the leading edge of the wings because they make a high speed vortex on the top of the wing which makes a low pressure zone on the top of the wing increasing lift at really low speeds. You could also add some wing fences to "focus" the the air flow over and under the wings and keep the air from moving outboard. Also some of the things ive said might not be true cuz i am only 12 and only know this information from google
YES! Please carry that shrink covering film!
I'd definitely like to find some lightweight metallic covering like that!!! Good luck with your Flugtag design!
Great video. In my mind, I've been comparing the Flugtag competition with Pinewood Derby. You can check out videos on optimizing pinewood derby cars, but you have a similar situation. When the plane leaves the dock, it has its potential energy and whatever kinetic energy you can muster into the takeoff. Therefore, you want to optimize everything you can. Keep the CG as high as you can to increase the P.E. Don't allow the wheels to have too much rotational inertia because that will take away from your overall K.E. Things like this could help you get a bit more flight time. Great luck at the competition.
I got the elegoo 3 max a few months ago, and for the price, I love it.
Would totally be interested in this covering for design tests!
That was great. Best of luck in the event. Way to go Ohio! (from a fellow Buckeye)
Of course you guys are Comcast Minions fans. It fits. Regardless, that's an impressive build. Good luck!
Cracking up at the Minion theme!
Yes we want covering!!!!
Please carry covering film!! I've had a really hard time with all the colors I want being backordered and or waiting forever for the shipping!!
yes please! bring in the film! irons too. so hard to find.
Nice job fellas . This means I have a chance too - - - - - will post a photo in the not too distant future !
Please add the covering material. Really need the same color you guys are using. Also how did you guys put on the rivets?
Can't wait to build an 1:3 RC version of the Double Trouble with functionnal Gru pilot of course! ❤
This is so fun to see coming together! I can’t wait to see it in action! On a side note, have you guys tried sky hooking and pulling a banner with an RC before? That would be so much fun. to see!
One of the most realistic looking pilot I've seen your planes........ :^P
Hopefully we'll be able to see it fly. Keep us in touch.
Cool film, made me want y'all to check out the inflatable aircraft concept.
USAF developed a self rescue inflatable aircraft in the 50s....
I saw you guys out there it was pretty cool. I wish there hadn't been such a strong tail wind
You were there in person!?! Damn I had no idea. I live less than an hour away and missed the event because I thought it was going to go on longer. I absolutely would have come out just to say hi if nothing else. I know Kyle Newsom was out there getting footage.
@@VictoryAviation It was pretty cool. Not sure it was worth a 15 hour round trip in my Comanche in this heat) but still very cool. I will have a video about it next Sunday.
@@JustPlaneSilly Yaaaaah, I watched a 15 min video someone put together of all the attempts. I was really surprised there wasn’t much flying of anything going on. A bit of a tailwind on craft like those would make a huge difference.
I won’t lie, I would definitely have been a bit disappointed if I’d flown that far to see it. Sorry bud 😕 If you’re still around the area, you could go to the National Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AF Base though! I’ve been living here for a little over a year for helicopter school and still haven’t been. I’ve never heard anything but good things about it.
@@VictoryAviation Its okay, I am building hours so it was a great excuse to go. 12 hours round trip!
The covering in the store would be great
Hey ,
I am an old timer
40 years ago i wanted a really slow flying model because we had a small area and i like slow flying airplanes. So i added large , full wing slotted flaps to the plane. It was one of those 4 ft B52 looking foamies with .049 engine. It was dramatic, slowed it down alot and improved handling.
Something to think about for the flugtag.
If it works, come to the UK with it and enter the Birdman comps
This is gonna be awesome 😎
I saw it live, your plane was definitely the most engineered, flew pretty good too.
it already happened? do you know if its on YT somewhere?
@@_AndromedaGalaxy_ look up cincinnati flugtag, yeah it was yesterday.
@@_AndromedaGalaxy_ don't get your hopes up too much though.
@@_AndromedaGalaxy_ czcams.com/video/kkO2RxfATFY/video.html last plane to go.
@@Sl4yerkid heard they got first overall but only went 39ft and someone else did 54ft.
I'd go with a canard or tandem wing design. Get that front wing in ground effect ASAP to get the nose up
my friend has a ultra light motorcycle stile plane and it's wings are about 27 lbs each. Most of which is the painted covering. So you guys seem to be about right with your lighter coverings.
Guys, I just saw a video of your flight at Flugtag from another CZcamsr. Looking forward to your video. Looks like the flight wasn't as great as I hoped for. Looks like your launch speed was too slow, or you had tail wind or bad downdrafts or something. Anyway, looks like it was fun! And congrats with the overall win, even though someone beat your distance.
Talk about edging just watched yalls run
Was great seeing you at the Flugtag & competing against you. We ( May We Help Flying Team ) loved your design. Great Job Guys !!!!
Loved seeing you as well. Such a fun time with so many great people/teams! Thanks so much for making the event special

You can practice with small amount of weight and keep adding until you get to pilots wt, adjusting balance and stability. I use bags of cat food. Also get a small girl to ride it. They only weigh 90 pounds.
@@FliteTest
Having a big thick airfoil with vortex generators on top would help.
Launching from a high platform on a cart would also give some advantage.
I would set it up for free flight with just rudder control. Any human input will probably be wrong any way.
Please do carry the covering material. Ive used some old covering rolls I had from back in the day on some of my planes and it works really well.
NIIIIICE 👌🏻 This is a winner for sure 🔥
They dropped as a stone in the water....
@@firefly2472Yeah I saw right after I wrote this comment 😂🤣 That was really unexpected 🤦🏻 lol
Really interesting! I don't think that lever need be a problem. Weightshift aircraft - hang gliders, ultralight flexwings - are controlled by an A-frame which is not intuitive at the beginning, because the inputs are the opposite compared to conventional stick flying. High-time 'normal' pilots often have difficulty converting. To dive, you pull the bar towards you, climb means push bar out. Regards from London UK.
Nice to see it in action. Thank you Stefan for the Vinyl Countdow...Nutball Water-Landing tip. Cheers! @dominoadventure
Hubby noticed your EAA '23 shirt! We live in Oshkosh 😊
Fifty years ago there were alll sorts of film choices. I remember everbody using Monokote or similar as we transitioned from tissue and dope...the good old days where you got stoned finishing your balsa plane!!
I want that light in the background
I would be down to have this covering in the DIY Section
Would love to see some different coverings on the the ft store. Maybe even something like so-lite, currently you gotta buy it from europe
You should make another plane like that and put one of those big engines you have, even if it's just to fly inside the ground effect. but it would be cool.
It's just a matter of time for them to build a silver 4m boeing 747
It would be AMAZING if you could build a big Ekranoplane!!
Cool
I really have trouble finding coverings that aren't a tiny 2m roll for pretty expensive. I've been looking at polyester fabric coverings with dope that's used for stretching full-scale aircraft wings, saw a fella make a video of it. Definitely I'd be interested in a north-american supplier of coverings that are cheaper.
Please bring on the film! I've had an idea for a disposable chopsticks frame for a while now!
10+ knots of tailwind in Cinci when they launched. The planners of the event did a poor job facing the platform east. Flite test coulda been epic!
Wow 😮
Yes GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Is that the crazy milk shake from that cartoon on comedy central? with Meat Wadd and Fries
That was hot
love your channel. just watched blimp build from 6 yrs ago. hope you guys try that again. suggest you fill voids inside blimp with helium ballons where possible. good luck at flugtag. Dave from kangaroo island . south Australia. cheers
Good suggestions (I don't remember the blimp build; gotta go back and find it).
Likewise, I've been wanting the team to revisit their flying saucer project (mostly a "flop" but still a fun idea.)
Version 2 - ditch the (heavy) internal frame in favor of a monocoque structure with internal formers/braces, use (the same) embedded thruster tubes, fill the rest of the interior with helium, eliminate the plastic umbrella canopy and use a thinner plastic (seal), etc. I think it would work!
ufo was good , please do that again . watched flugtag on another site , seen you guys went last flite. no results were announced . it lookedyou guys went about 40 - 45 metres or were the marker floats marking feet? either way you guys looked to have got the best result @@airhead8363
Just watched the Cincinnati attempt from a cell phone video. I think you forgot something: pilot weight and what it does to the wing loading. Pilot weight, to scale, should be added to model prototypes. My background is in model rocketry (Estes). I had to make the adjustments to get the machines the build the R&D concepts.
Hey Josh I'm soo glad I could meet you at oshkosh 2023. Also great job making those wings and tail.
Oh no! Ditch the wheels and get it on a stand! This is the only way it will work!!! The stand, as it dumps off of the platform, acts like an upside-down high-star, flinging the plane off. That is how that B-25 did so well! It's an added fling at the end that propels the craft off and to flying speed. Pushing won't get it fast enough!
Too late
Agreed, in fact you could improve on the design of that B-25 launch dolly by making it become a trebuchet as it falls off the edge. The four guys pushing it need to be at the front, so when they fall off the edge, their combined weight hanging on to a sturdy handle or even connected harness contributes to the launch velocity. Get the 4 biggest heaviest guys you can!!
I used Mylar self heat sealed. Hobby shops are hard to find
What I don't get is why a biplane? I have done a lot cheap foamie conversions, ft stuff and did a biplane and my research said they aren't efficient? Great project and love the channel.
Make this design available or plans at least to make an RC version! Good luck on your endeavors nonetheless!
Well it was a good attempt guys, shame it seemed to be in a stalled condition the moment the plane left the platform. Others have used higher launch cradle devices with catapults, I suggest you use a similar concept next time. ...and take a stick with a ribbon with you to check the wind at launch, that extra 2 knots of wind gust the right way at the right time could change your distance from 2 feet to 200 feet. Eagerly awaiting your debrief of the flight.
How are you planning on getting it up to flight speed? In the best performance I've seen the team used a set of large wheels with a gearing system to multiply their running speed to achieve a high flight speed. They blew everyone else away so not sure if the rules were changed to disallow this. You can have the best aerodynamic design but If you do not get to speed you will stall right off the runway and fall to the water. Aircraft carriers use a catapult for a reason.
yeah, spoiler, it didn't fly at all, it plunged.
Totally agree. None of the contestants got very good speed. Barely saw more than a 1 to 1 glide ratio from all the entries.
There was a large gust of wind that continued through launch in the same direction as the launch. They took off downwind at the worst possible moment, so achieving even 50 feet was not easy. Not sure why Red Bull set up the barge that way. Everyone had to take off downwind.
Transparent Lime green covering
Strong as B17?....mmm dont think so, but the silver covering looks awesome! Id like it if you carry in store. Too bad you couldnt test the flugtag glider w pseudo-catapult similar to wright bros.
Very large paper cup and a hang glider?
The film would be a great product.
I Think a Flite test Fabric would be an idea. Perhaps a smaller width for RC and a wider Width for Ultralights
I would have done a off white/tan color and done the same name as the Voisin Farman I as this is what the Glider looks like.
I have a few projects that I need a covering film for! Can't find it in the US for a justifiable price.
As long as you dont get between the water and that control stick, you should be good 😅
You need to do a tow test to determine speed to fly, CG and trim.
