The cardboard trick is genius. You learn something new every day you use for the rest of your life! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I've had an on-going problem with my 01 Dodge Dakota for years. This is by far the best video I've come across to remedy the problem. Dodge has a problem with their HVAC system and should offer owners a recall repair. Until that happens, I'm glad that there are videos like this to help owners who may not always have the money to pay outrageous dealer fees for repairs.

Before you buy a new one, try unplugging the connector and plug it back in. I just did that and my completely dead blower motor sprung to life. It works on all settings including the 3rd one which hasn't worked in over 2 years! Definitely try replugging it first.
Today my fan stopped working, I Googled the problem, got this video, it was exactly what was wrong with mine, I followed it step-by-step, and my fan works now. Thank You ☺☺☺
Just installed a new resistor on my 2004 Durango. Your video helped me find out the problem and get it fixed!!Thanks for your video!!! Two thumbs up! God bless
UPDATE! February 10, 2019: I looked at your video again and saw the part where you first banged on the blower motor a few times. I never have, so, I did, and voila! It started running! It appears that there is a loose connection in the wiring there, which should be easy to fix! THANK YOU for your great video, you saved me a ton of grief! Just goes to show you, check the simple things first, you just might find a quick and easy solution!
Thanks for the video brother. An expensive trip to the garage just turned into a $12.00 bargain. Took only about fifteen minutes. Much appreciated.
Great video very explanitive and helpful, additionally you kinda sounds like Ray Ramano 🤣
Thank you I watched your video and fixed it my second pin was getting hot and melting the plastic. Thanks again
Thank you so much! I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport V6 4 door that had this problem. Your step by step video just saved me a ton!
This video is exactly what I was looking for. My fan in my 2001 Durango just stopped one day. Checked both fuses, fine. Next I'll be doing this. Thanks
Thank you! My neighbor just had the exact same problem. Cut my time in half on diagnosis thanks to your video. They just had a loose wire. Keep the good videos coming brother!
Hey Thanks a million! The exact same corrosion problem on mine. Just wiggled enough green stuff out of the connector to make the blower go until the weekend, Junkyard time!
Thanks for the video, my connector was stuck due to over heating, so I gave it a bath in WD40(Wires end up) and it popped apart after and hour in the bath, good tip about the motor, will explore.......OBTW my resister replacement was $8 from Autozone......
Thank you so much for posting this video. I knew something strange was going on because it would work on low but if you increased the fan power it would completely shut down and low wouldn't work for a period of time. I couldn't unplug so i assumed it was bad like yours. I took a picture after I removed it (yes the left screw was a problem @Dave W).
Hey - thanks a ton for this video. I know next to nothing about cars but you explained everything so well that even I was able to replace this part in my truck, all by myself even! The kit cost me $15 and works perfectly and I couldn't be happier.
I am glad i could help.
Thanks so much for this very easy to follow video, I first tested my blower motor just the way you did and it ran fine, then replaced the resister and everything runs great with all speeds! You saved me a big bill at a shop! Thanks!!
Agreed. Wonderful Helpful Video. I may go straight for the jugular and replace my resistor too. This could have been the sharp electrical burning smell I smelled once (coming thru the inside cabin air vents) in my Dodge Dakota 2004 Truck. My Blower Fan only goes full blast or not at all. At least I can still turn it off.
Thanks for the video...I almost ordered a 40 dollar blower motor but luckily i watched this video and checked my resistor first and i had the same issue in my 02 durango!
Dude i got an 02 durango. Had it since 05. That resistor and harness keep melting. At least once a year i put a new one in. Cant figure out what the issue is. About to put a new blower motor in. Pretty sure thats not the issue but for a little money. Fk it.
@@brianw7841 did it fix it for good? My blower motor works but only after I slap it lol
Thanks this helped saved me from buying a new blower saved me like $110 bucks mine wasn't as bad as yours it was just a resistor 12 bucks at O'Reilly's
Thanks a ton. I thought a new resistor was going to solve the problem, but it was also a totally corroded connector. I can make it work if I wiggle or hold it in the right spot. New connector on order should completely resolve. Thank you for posting such an informative video!
Good, simple, easy explanation. Covered everything I believe for testing. Good job. Thank you.
Your welcome.
My Durango looks just the same, burnt plug. My last Durango, bad resistor, plug was ok. Cheap easy fix. Good video.
Nice you saved me alot of wondering have the same issue we found fuses were all good and blower working but never thought of this being bad I'll be checking this tomorrow 🤙
Thank you
The resister replacement is a quick and dirty car lot fix that doesn't solve the real problem. Usually, the blower motor is drawing to many amps and overheating the resistor and the wires.
Hey Rich, Thanks to you and your review of the Mastech multimeter I purchased the same model and have been very happy with it. Thanks for posting.
Glad you like it.
Thanks a bunch for the simple instructions and demonstration! Awesome
This video gave me confidence to fix my own Durango. To bypass the testing, well, I'll just replace the resistor, the blower and the fuse. That should cover it.
good video..my 2003 similar,,, tested the fan, and it was the usual resistor, which went out in a puff of smoke...Thank YOU
22 dislikes. Wonder if those people know how much effort goes into making a video like this with dual screens, that clearly shows all the locations being worked on.
Code 3 4 5 10 Dodge Dakota Sport V6
They're the type of people that dont work on their own vehicles.
So far there have been 64 dislikes as of February 10, 2019. I guess those people want him to repair their vehicles, for free?
I enjoyed this tutorial. It was very informative. Thank you sir!!!
Hi! Thanks for posting on how to test for the blower and resistor. Bought a k11 micra that sat for two and a half years. Got it running but the AC blower did not work but still has gas in it. I'm gonna fix this next.
Perfect video, exact same problem I have including the plug. Thank You
Great video very informative thanks a lot man i fixed mine right after your video mine was smelling like burnt plastic rite before it gave out
Great useful video, trying to diagnose my 03 Durango right now
thank you for your very helpful and instructional video, and i also must add that you sound just like peter, from family guy. not trying to disrespect or offend....
just hopped under my dash .... same issue I cleaned mine up and it's back working again thanks
Mine stopped blowing air altogether. No matter what setting you click it to . I'm glad I watched this video before spent hundreds at a garage diagnosing it.
I just unplugged the power to the blower motor and plugged it back in and it works great again!
Check the the drain tube for the hvac box. Chances are it's clogged and it's filling the hvac box with water. Blow the tube out with compressed air
I will check that.
Smashing diagnostics and repair :-))
No wonder it didnt want to work lol, i bet the old resistors were ok, just dampness killed the connectors, thank god it was nice to get to :-))
Thank you for posting this. I’ll be checking my soon.
Wow thanks! This was exactly what I was looking for 😊
Thank your so much. Helped me get mine working again
thanks for the great tips. Did they design these things to all die horribly with corrosion/heat?
hey i have an 07 dakota and sometimes the vents work just fine and other times dont even turn on. is this what the problem could be?
Ok I broke some rules here. About 5 yrs ago my fan stopped working. Instead of doing it right I cut out the 2 connections/harness. I then taped the wires directly. This fixed the problem. Well 5 yrs later It's out again. Does this mean it's burned out? And if I replace it will it work?
great vid. thanks so much for this. it helped emencly
I just did this in my Durango a few months ago and now I have to do the one in my Grand Cherokee. The part isnt more than $30 ish dont get robbed at the parts counter.
Hold on to your hat! Haha good job, im learning a lot from your videos thanks rich :)
My 2002 Dodge Durango, heater not blowing out front, but back is still blowing. Any suggestions what could be wrong?
hi have one problem in rear wiper ann defrost i drive in raining day and see of stop wiper and defrost light off in same time meybe one relay o fuse in durango 5.2 99
I've followed the video step by step. In his case the blower motor resistor was bad, but mine works. Where do i go from here? What's the next thing i can check. Any advice?
what type of batter should I use to test the fan? Does it really matter?
Can the resistor go bad even if it doesn't look bad? (No corrosion) my blower would only work on high, over time got weaker, than finally stopped blowing for good. The resistor still looks good but not sure on how to test it
Thanks for your videos help me out a lot
ive replaced my motor plus new plug and resistor. worked for 1 hr maybe And nothing now no fuse blowen either do you have any suggesting
It worked for me! Thanks😊
Awesome video. I will be trying this later today/tomorrow. My AC blower quit working all of a sudden this morning. :(
what caused the resister to go bad to begin with? we need a update on the new restior u put in we want to know how long it took before it went bad too?
is this the same procedure in the durango? the rear ones work fine but not the front one
Same problem, same solution. Thank you
What is the white circle plug above the blower motor resister?
Great video. i wish I had found it when I had to do this job the first time several years ago. In the past 6 years I've gone through 4 resistor blocks and 2 fused connectors. Factory connector was melted and and fused. The replacement lasted a couple years and did the same thing. I then used the extra set of wires that comes with the new connector and just connected those in the correct positions to a new resistor block. Used shrink wrap on each little connector so it would not touch the one next to it. The most recent resistor lasted about two months. As you know the fan runs only on high speed when the block goes out. The fan motor obviously works but I'm wondering if there is some way it could be drawing excess current and causing these resistor blocks to overheat. Thanks.
+Scotty S. An update for anyone in the same boat. I removed the fan and sure enough it did not spin freely. The motor shaft bushing probably was overdue for some oil thus creating some drag and drawing excess amps. The trouble is the way the fan is designed you cant reach the shaft to oil the bushing. So head over to Amazon. I was able to get an aftermarket replacement fan for $40 TYC brand), a new resistor block and connector together for $12, and an extra resistor block to keep for a spare for $6 (both Dorman brand). Bolt it all in and splice the new wires in and it works great. So folks, always pull the fan and check that it turns easily when replacing the resistor block. And at these prices, it may be worth replacing all of it preemptively. Cheers!
+Scotty S Good tip.....yes spin the motor to check for drag.
I have a question... Would one be able to wire the colors together without a resistor? I'm the type of person, either you have the blower on, and on full. Or not on at all. Having these blowers running low burns these resistors. Just bad design. Thanks for this video!
Nice video...very helpful, thx
You just saved the day my friend. Thanks a bunch!
Glad to hear it!
How do you get to the motor mine is covered by plastic molding?
This is very helpful. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Cheers my friend, you just saved my,,,,,,,, thanks.
Is there an easier way to test it? Do the auto stores have computers that can find that?
You're a good teacher
Yeah I’ve changed my resistor 6 times 3 connectors later and 3 blower motors later the last two pins in the resistor are burnt up is this because I have my heat always on high
No its because Dodge uses cheap parts in order for their partners to make extra money. Their window regulators are trash. I've replaced every window but all break. They use plastic parts inside to hold a tight cable and expect it to actually hold? If they used a metal part inside would avoid it. But Dodge knows this. Same as the switches on the driver door, they tend to go bad cuz they are cheap. Sad cuz I like the concept of the Dakota. I'd rather have a Dodge truck than a Ford or Chevy but Dodge has obvious areas to improve
This is so sad, I grew up whit my dad using American cars and trucks and I was doing the same, I went through the tree big ones and now based in my son experience I'm thinking to switch for a Toyota truck, still I have a dodge Dakota very poor constructed and a 2014 ford Mustang whit transmission, suspension, breaks, fuel, cooling, integrity and sound problems at the point that I'm going to sale it and buy a Toyota 86 for my wife. it is incredible the lack of materials quality and the poor design. Toyota, finally I'm ready to give you a tray.
What causing the blower resister to keep blowing out and only work in the high position 3one I bought this year
try a different brand
So it was the resistor not the Motor? I have a 09 Durango I wonder if it's in the same location?
Awesome video, this is how you should make mechanical vids on youtube!
Wow, thanks!
generally if you have that kind of resistance the blower motor is working harder than it needs to be and is simply wearing out. When my blower locked up one day it took out the resistor pack with it
I've changed the wiring, harness, and resistor. I still don't have heat. What now?
very informative, i think i can do my vehicle now
excellent fixed it in 10 min no problem...
thanks for the write up
Great info but I would add a warning about airbags yo disconnect and isolate from grounding the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag capacitors to discharge to avoid airbag accidental deployment as per the dodge ship manual. Thanks
I really don't feel like doing this I'm just glad it's an easy fix
I had the repair first done at a gas station for about 350. Ever since I have done it myself. I guess a bad design by Chrysler. Same resistor and wiring plug has failed probably 5 or 6 times since. Blower motor always tests okay. Have to be a contortionist to reach and unscrew the resistor but otherwise a simple fix. Dorman sells both resistor and plug together. Don't just replace the resistor if the hot pin is burnt. Replace both resistor and plug at the same time or the resistor will fail within a month. Doesn't appear to be a moisture issue as the car is in Southern California.
Thanks for the video...
thanks for the video.. when removing the clip, whoever owned the truck before me mustve broke the black and red release clips... anyway to get this out? @richpin06a
Good! Job. Richpin06. Thank you very much
Nice video . you are awesome
Thank you for the video sir
Anyone have trouble getting the screw out on the drivers side. (left)? The right side screw came right out. Maybe a thin walled socket will work as there seems to be a small plastic flange up there covering part of the screw.
Great information sir thank you.
You are welcome
what is that wiring harness the blower motor connects to called?????
Can the corrosion cause a fire or anything?
Great video
Thank you so much, great vid, light hearted and effective. appreciated!
Por favor onde fica o filtro do ar condicionado o tubo filtro.
This was my problem thanks!
Thank you
how do you remove the plug that goes into the resiste? i thought my blower motor qas broken so i was about to buy a new one but the plug was toasted and the person said as long as i get a good connection from good metal to good metal it was fine
replacing it is better then just making sure you get a good connection
Cristian Hernandez
my 2006 Durango first 2 speeds dont work. but speed 3 and 4 work. What would that be caused by?
The blower motor resistor controls blower speeds so i would start by looking at that.
richpin06a I change the resistor cause was burn and was working for 2 weeks...now it's bad again what can be the problem or how can i fix it?
In 2024 ... I thank you sir, I have a Dodge Dakota 2001 ... Problem fixed
I am glad to hear you got your problem fixed.
When you say "oh boy".. haha.
Great video
