Hi, I am Greek and have eaten Gyro all my life. One of my favorite lunch meals. By the way the proper way to pronounce is: YEE-roh. Not to worry every non Greek says it wrong. Love your videos I watch them all. Thank you.
I think I learned your pronounciation back in the early 70's when Jack-in-the-Box put Gyros on their menu! That's the only time I've ever eaten one.
Thanks for the correct pronunciation!
It's a big problem in america, I didn't know the proper pronunciation till my 20s, the first time I heard about a gyro was in seinfeld. I was corrected though by a local greek restaurant when I ordered there. As long it's made correctly with high quality ingredients a gyro is amazing, with a balance of bread, veg, meat and sauce you can eat it every day.
Do you have the word "gyroscope" in the Greek language, and do you pronounce it "yee-roh-scope?" I heard that it was named after the rotating spit. In the US I've heard it pronounced yee-roh... also jee-roh or jie-roh. I've never heard 'guy-roh' like in the video.
Oof I’m Greek aswell and my fiancé purposely mispronounces it on purpose and it drives me nuts!! 😂 don’t even get me started on people trying to pronounce tzatziki 💀
Rhodes, Greece. It's 1992 and I just got off the ship. My buddy and I are wandering around and we come to a very small, hole-in-the-wall place with gyros. An old man in there preparing gyros the right way.
Before we left I visited that place 5 times. The gyros were amazing. I wish I had one of those now.
Learn how to make them...if you love something, find a recipe and just do it. You just might surprise yourself and your friends.
@@misspad7282 you can't make gyros at home. It's prepared in big quantity and it takes hours. Gyros is the meat. All the other ingredients can be made at home. You can also make pita souvlaki at home, but not pita gyros.
@@helgaioannidis9365 Creta farms precooked gyros disagree with your comment 😅.
@@misspad7282 You have almost no chance to make Gyros yourself because it is only made in big quantity. You should live in a very large city .Then go to the ethnic market where you can find products from all over the world. The butcher may have some pre cooked Gyro there.Only then you should recook this specific type of meat.
I'm from Rhodes. Let me guess. Was the place named Steki?
Every culture has its sandwich and the gyro is so good when done properly.
Properly is an understatement! I've had some that I couldn't eat
Surprisingly, Arby's makes a really good gyro.
You can get them with roast beef, turkey, or traditional lamb meat.
We have a Greek restaurant here called the Acropolis They make a gyro so good I eat it once a week
@@protorhinocerator142 lol we don't put lamb, beef or turkey in our gyros. Even if you searched all day you wouldn't find a place to buy it in Greece. Traditional gyro is pork and the "modern" version is chicken. Maybe you should travel in Greece sometime and taste the real thing. Cheers.
Depending where you get it from.
When working in Athens (Greece) for 6 months I ate pita gyros a lot. It's so tasty. It was also the first Greek sentence I learned to speak, μια πίτα γύρο με κοτόπουλο (one pita gyros with chicken).

I got to go to beautiful Greece once. Part of a nurses exchange program in the early 80's. I met some of the finest people, I've ever met. GORGEOUS men and STUNNING women. Friendly people and the places to eat. OMG. Small mom & pop places with Earth shattering foods. AMAZING.
The sauce is yogurt, cucumber and garlic with a splash of lemon juice easily made with a good recipe off of the internet
Ehm...Where's the olive oil?
actually vinegar not lemon juice and olive oil
Tzatziki also has chopped mint in it.
@@obijon7441 Dill is more commonly used, but both are optional.

Yes. Sharing food is the ultimate universal human way of forming a bond of friendship. There's just something incredibly ancient and deep about it. We're pretty much hardwired that way.

Interestingly, the land that is now Pakistan used to be part of Greece for over 200 years despite being thousands of miles away. It was called the Indo-Greek Kingdom and the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom.

I was lucky because I ate gyros from when I was little. My father was Greek and I had 5 cousins on his side of the family, they all had restaurants: Greek, fried chicken, an old fashioned hamburger stand, one fancy-schmancy fine dining place and a general family restaurant.
As a Greek fan from the start of this channel, I am thrilled with this video! A little info for my 4 friends: In Greek, Greece translates as Ellada!
Thanks I didn't know that.

Greek food is divine (I mean the fresh high quality food they have in Greece, in other countries often you don't find the proper ingredients to make it authentic).
Turkish moussaka 🇹🇷🌭🏆🥁🏆👑
@@thebroughamshow6985 is Turkish moussaka different from Greek moussaka?
@@helgaioannidis9365 Not much but I think both of them are a bit different from its original form which Turks took it from Levand region and Greeks took it from Turks. There are many dishes like that in Greece which are inspired from Turkish ones (baklava, döner (gyros), dolma, sarma etc.) as there many dishes in Turkey inspired from Greek cuisine (most of the vegetable based dishes) especially in Western side of Turkey and Istanbul. Mousakka is an Arabic word hence indicates its origin. The names of the dishes always give their origins away. Cuisines in the world are always get inspirations from their neighbors.

Yam gyro! I am salivating. I don’t think there are many people not liking gyro. Well done all of you, it was fun watching this!
Döner kebap (Turkish), Gyros (Greek), and Shawerma (Arabic) are all basically the same thing. The meat may be seasoned a bit differently, and they may be commonly served with different toppings, it's the same general idea of stacking thin slices of meat on a vertical spit. All the cuisines in that region have a lot of similar dishes that are only named differently in different languages. I've even seen a number of instances of Arab or Turkish restauranteurs in the US using the word "gyros" on their menus just because it's more familiar to Americans.
Gyros has mostly pork Döner beef and Shawarma chicken
@@abraham2174 The bit about shawerma is not true; it's usually lamb or beef and only sometimes chicken. (I can say this with some confidence because I grew up in an Arabic-speaking country.) Gyros and döner kebap also use a variety of meats. (In the US, gyros is usually either lamb or beef.) The type of meat is not really important, the process of stacking thin slices, slow roasting on a vertical spit, and shaving it off the sides is the important part.
Mexico's al pastor is more-or-less the same process as well (and is in fact a Mexican adaptation of the shawerma brought by Lebanese immigrants) but differs much more in that it is almost always pork and is seasoned with a chile paste and pineapple.
@@abraham2174 In GB Doner is lamb.
@@britturk123 that's awesome!
Just connecting some Dots here: "gyros" could literally meant "turning/spinning" or "to turn/to spin". i am under the impression "Shawarma" means something similar. Eastern Mediterranean region and Anatolia share many characteristics. The "histories of the sword" may have kept us apart throughout the ages, but the "histories of the spoon" bring us together.
such pure humans ❤ what excellent wit they have
Pure? Noone is pure, plus you know nothing about these men. Stop believing everything you see on a glowing screen.
@@mercster I don't believe you.
@@mercster it was simply a first impression of them, just relax
@@se7en952 It's not though... it's a trend of people on the Internet using pedantic, stereotyped speech patterns (the overuse of "pure" and "wholesome", "protect them at all costs", etc.) It leads to a dulling of the meaning of the words, unoriginal and boring communications, and low signal to noise ratios. You may not care about these things, and that's your prerogative.
But don't get in the way of me trying to make someone aware of the fact that calling people "pure", when you have no idea who they are, is damaging to language and communication. It's also indicative of a "consumer culture", where people believe advertisements that claim corporations care for and love them, and that anyone in a video you enjoy watching is a "good person." If you can't see the detrimental effects of these practices, then get out of the way of those who do.

I watched the beginning of this while I was doing laundry and I knew what I wanted for lunch. Now after having a Gyro from a local, San Antonio, TX, Greek restaurant I'm back to finish the video.
FYI for all loving people. Traditional Gyros (Yeeros) in Greece is: Pita with tzatziki, pork yeero or sometimes chicken, onions (some people omit that), mustard, ketchup, tomato and always fries. No ground meat, no beef, no lamb. All other variations are welcome, it's just 95% of all fast foods in Greece, sell it like that.
this!! my american friends thought it was pronounced djai-row, and they thought it was always a sandwich wrapped with a large pita bread in the manner such as the video. but really, ive seen gyros being served so many ways, every one as delicious and heart warming as the next. we must spread the love!!!
And no lettuce!

Yes it’s similar to a shawarma. I live in greektown in Toronto. The gyros are awesome here with the fries wrapped inside it.
My favorite sandwich! It needs the yogurt/cucumber sauce and spices to make it great! Love to all of you!
I've never tried shawarma, I still think I would like gyros better because cucumbers are one of my favorites so I love tzatziki sauce!
@Mister Dude yes I've always had it in pita . Every place I've had gyros they've always come with tzatziki sauce as the standard.
@Mister Dude I have never seen gyros made with pork. It's usually lamb, lamb and beef, or chicken. And always with tzazicki sauce
@Mister Dude well tzatziki sauce is made with cucumbers, and it is the sauce served on gyros, so gyros do have something to do with cucumber. Never heard of a pork gyro before, every one I've had over the past 50 years was lamb, or lamb and beef.
@Mister Dude I have never been to Greece. I just know that every Greek restaurant and festival I have been to in my 60 years on Earth serves it the way I described. If it's different in Greece, I don't know about it. I'm always open to learning and eating new things.
@Mister DudeYou are correct. Traditional Greek gyro meat can be chicken or pork. Contacted a Greek friend who grew up in Greece. He said either or a combination of the two. He also said it's really the herbs and spices used to season the meat that make gyro different from shawarma. Totally different flavor profiles. So though lamb is not traditional, the flavor profile is gyro, and not shawarma.
Love this sandwich

I LIKE YOUR INTRO VERY MUCH, IT'S FUN.
We have a couple Greek restaurants in town that popped up in the last five years. It was so exciting for me because my absolute favorite restaurant growing up was a little mom and pop Greek restaurant with incredible traditional Greek dishes. I lived without Greek food for probably 15 years, then one Greek chain popped up in town. It was okay but definitely Americanized. Another small shop opened up a couple years later. Much better, but still not that Greek mom and pop flavor that I miss. If I remember right the owners and cooks could barely speak English, though they genuinely tried. And at least a couple of the kids conversed with customers and manned the floor. I miss that place. They closed their doors years ago as the parents were getting old when we moved away in 2003, but God bless them and their wonderful cooking. Someday I'll stumble across a Greek place that can match those flavors, but I doubt I'll find it in my little town.
