About Dreamgirls:
The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with the big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

Great observation
That subtle change combined with the different music styles really puts an opposing spin on the same situation. One of the reasons why I love the story that this song tells. To me it always sounded like one or both of the lovers has to leave town soon and they know this can't last.

The problem is that Effie put her heart and soul in to the song. The Disco version while it's fine for a dance, there was no raw emotion on Deena and the Dreamgirls part.

And to the ones saying she's "yelling" that's a strong, church voice she has and she's an amazing performer. Well, Beyonce as always sounds perfect and commercial as in all of her songs, that's why Jennifer's version is better for me, you can hear and feel real emotions. Jennifer is mesmerizing in this, while Beyonce sings everything the same way.

I Just Consider Both Their Versions Combined As One Song ❤
This song has been in my playlist for years and my imagination has applied it to multiple different stories, and I've often imagined both versions as being sung by the same woman. I've imagined Effie's version as the woman singing about a formative experience that broke her heart, and Deena's version being the same woman a couple of years later when she's detached/jaded and pretending that this is all a good time. That, or they could even be the same woman singing about the same situation, with Deena's version being the unbothered facade that she puts on but Effie's version being the hurt she truly feels.

So, here's something that got me thinking: Beyoncé sang this song like she left her heart and soul at home, and yet, she totally crushed it. It's like a showcase of her insane talent. But now, enter Jennifer Hudson, who took the same song and poured every ounce of her heart and soul into it, and it seemed effortless for her. Beyoncé goes soulless, while Jennifer Hudson goes all-in with the soul.
That's the point of the movie. Effie's voice is soulful, while Deena's voice is much more commercial, which is why Curtis pushes her to the front of the Dreams - he knows larger audiences will flock to the lighter voiced, slimmer (and in this adaptation, fairer-skinned) Deena than the more soulful and full-figured Effie simply because Deena's voice is better suited for the genres that larger audiences prefer.
Because Bey's version was based on the one night stand culture of the time. Jennifer's version was about the loss of love that couldn't be. One is based love, the latter is based on lust.

I often imagine both versions as being sung by the same person: Effie's is the hurt she truly feels while Deena's is the unbothered facade she puts on, or Effie's is a heartbreaking formative experience while Deena's is some years later after she's been jaded. Particularly in the musical version, where Deena's version keeps the forlorn lyrics of the bridge and the disco style can't fully strip it of its emotional impact, I detect some concealed/dressed-up sadness in Deena's version, showing a woman who's partying away the feelings she's shoved down.

While i do like the Disco version, nothing tops Jennifer’s version. You can feel the pain and emotion like she really killed it. But I believe that’s the point also. They steal her song that has the soul and meaning and turn it into something that’s trending so it’ll sell.
