8.8 is the bolt shear strength , stainless bolts are marked with either A2 or A4 depending on the grade
I agree with that. Plus, stainless steel may not rust, but stainless steel nuts and bolts do have a nasty habit of cold welding themselves together when you tighten them up.
Was going to comment exactly this👍
well said
@@100SteveB Of course you always lube a fastener so that never happens
Most normal strength bolts are 8.8 unless on stretch bolts in a engine, brakes or suspension then normally 10.9
Nice job mate, you should be able to spin round the tip on exhaust so the grub screw is underneath and not visible, small detail I know lol, looking forward to the head gasket/cylinder head update.
Recently started watching the channel, exactly what i done when i had no garage or shed to work from. Work with what you got and your doing a good job of it 👍👍 keep up the good work throughout the videos, the bell is on 🛎🛎
Another awesome video mate. Keep it up 👍🏻 I’m still thinking about getting a Cooper S 🤔 your videos are definitely swaying my mind to get one
I've got to do exactly the same job on my wife's '03 plate Cooper tomorrow. You don't need to keep taking the battery on and off to open the boot hatch, there a manual cable release under the rear seat, just pull up the rear seat base and its clearly visible.
Early Mini’s didn’t have the internal release. I retrofitted one to the 02 plate Cooper we used to have which is now my stepsons car.
What a complete pig of a job that was, centre mounting plate had one 10mm bolts totally rounded off when I came to it. End up taking 5 of the 6 bolts out, levering down the plate, loosening the rubber mount holding bolts, removing one of the rubber mounts and wriggling the exhaust out of the rubber mounts. Refitting was done centre mount first, then rear and finally front. On the upside the rear hangers came off the car without a hitch, bolt threads were in great shape. And yes, its probably the heaviest exhaust I've ever put on a car.
Great vid James! You got a right bargain there with that exhaust seems a quality piece of kit for what you paid, nice fit too fills the bumper recess well. Well done mate loving your work 👍
Great job on the exhaust. So much easier working on a small car when your lying underneath it. Really enjoying this "mini series" lol 👍
Thank you for sharing! this is a job that I have been putting off for months....I even considered getting the garage to do it, but having watched this, you've spurred me on to give it a try! Fingers crosed!
I was looking for anexhaust for around the the same price £47 but the cheapest at the moment is around £88 I'll keep searching. Update... EBay £44 plus new brackets £15 new gasket £6. Glad I'm doing it myself with that saving.
Thanks again, appreciated!
Regarding the back-box exhaust mounts,i changed mine twice.the 1st set was destroyed after 3-4 moths. They are very prone to damage,so i filled the 2nd set with silicone for high temperatures used in gaskets, let it dry for a week and installed them afterwards. It is now 4 years and they still are perfect. The silicone is still absorbing the movement of the back-box and holds it in place securely.
Thanks for putting this up for us to watch.
Best regards,Carl.
I really enjoy watching your recent videos on repairs cars etc, there is always some surprise and you never know what you are going to get in the next videos aha,
Treat yourself to an impact gun. Its painful to watch you take ages to undo stuff that should take seconds.
Delta Romeo because when working on rusty old stuff you have more feel with a socket spanner, you know if something’s about to sheer off on you
@@steriskyline4470 if things are that bad they want replacing really. He did fit new bolts.
I agree they have a time and place but it would have helped here.
Probably cba to set it up, they are great in a workshop but he has so much shit to setup and film I bet he couldn't be assed to lug it out and set it up. he should set it up in his workshop with a 30m lead so he doesn't need to set it up on the drive@@Aceofcakesuk
Because impact guns snap bolts
James has a battery operated one...he has used it a few times but I think he prefers to use the hand tools as most people wo watch his videos don't have impact guns etc...so they can relate to how it's done. Mostly, when it comes to bolt removal, the initial 'loosening is best done by hand tools then the remainder 'zipped off' with an impact, caveat being that even loosened bolts can snap and depending on where they are it's best NOT to use an impact until you are absolutely sure it won't shear off un necessarily..
Exhaust cost was decent, doesn’t look to bad either from the original, Nice job
Great vid! Lift up the back seat and under in the center is a release cable for the hatch/boot lid.
Nice job mate👍 Can't wait to see the engine done as well!
Nice one doing this myself soon so good to see how it cones apart 👍.
Fantastic guide! I'm changing mine on my 2004 cooper in the next week as it has gone in the same place!
Where did you buy the new parts from?
You're a brave man to be wearing white shoes working on a very rusty underside of the car
Originally the back exhaust mounts are captive, when you change them they snap off so have to drill them out and put bolts in, some ones been and done that before.
Another great video , well done on your perseverance with awkward situations.
Quite often I find the studs (x4) for the exhaust bracket, which are welded to the boot floor need to be drilled out and replaced with nuts and bolts
Treat yourzelf to a bottle jack; cheap and useful for so many things. btw had a problem using a jack to hold up an engine; over time it lost pressure and dropped. Bunch of bricks or something?
Out all the guys that do car videos on CZcams, I only watch yours as your very productive and it's not all about buying A fast car to make it faster, well done and keep it up 👍
Same here he's a down to earth likable lad too, No ego just honest genuine content 👌
Just done the same to my girlfriends Mini Cooper, same year, same colour, great video!
Awesome 👌 bought this new exhaust today I'm so glad I'm watching this video 📹 😀
As for exhaust mounts tape up one side and fill the voids with sikaflex !, we used to do it on engine and gearbox mounts back in the day before poly bushes became the norm/affordable !.
Id be stripping and cleaning the rear brakes. Can see its been binding slightly on the passenger rear as the disc has gone red
would be interesting to see the date code on the tyres
my girlfriend bought an 03 Mini about 3 years ago. When she took it in for its first Service and MOT they pointed out the back right tire was an original..
Nice one! About to fit uprated exhaust mounts on my ST next week
Hi i cant remember if ive mentioned before but instead of having to connect the battery up when you need to go in the boot there is a boot release cable underneath the rear seat just pull it up and there is a little loop type thing that pops the hatch....great videos by the way...
8.8 is the tensile strength of the steel used.
Grades of steel in nuts/bolts are;
8.8
10.9
12.9
Stainless is usually marked with "A2"
Great video mate. Always informative 👍
Hi,Im enjoying these videos, they are awesome, the exhaust is looking nice compared to the other one.
That is the correct style of exhaust tip apparently. When the full scale clay mockups were made it was noticed there was no exhaust so someone jammed a drinks can in as a substitute.
To open the boot manually, lift the rear seat, drivers side’ there’s a latch you pull and it pops the boot ☺️👍🏽
The exhaust looks of good quality better than the original, UPS deliver the cylinder head?..
I knew the back box would snap and fall off 😂 good job buddy keep it up!
Another tip top , roller coaster mini disassembly content story, Great stuff!
That 'weird strap thing' is an aftermarket clamp. The original the muffler had similar hooks welded on to it in a slightly different fashion, but same result. I bought one of those aftermarket clamps from Amazon last year. Works very well. You should keep it.
Would putting some silicone in the mounts reinforce them slightly?!
Your tenacity is impressive.
did this at the weekend on my brothers mini. there a pig to work on but they are a huge amount of fun
Awesome work man 👍🏻
Love your vids...great work. I know I’m old but I’m getting you a belt for Christmas 🙈
Had the same problem with my mini broke in the same place aswell
You know there is a boot release under the back seats right ?
"Don't know if you can see all that movement".. mate, the NASA space station can see that movement 😂
Thank you for posting this video. Can you tell me the dimensions of the new muffler? Length, width, depth? I am going to cut off the rusted out muffler on my Mini, and weld on a universal muffler like your new one. My pipe and resonator are all good, need to spend as little as possible.
Thanks so much for making this video I’m watching it for reference now I own a 2002 Mini Cooper looks just like yours.. hoping you could help provide a link for the replacement exhaust and or parts features or the key words for searching. The mini and I are located in Puerto Rico.
did the head turn up??? 8.8 on the bolts is breaking strength....
What does the plate in the center do??
New upload this looks good
Anyone have a link to the exhaust he used sounds good on later vids and seemed to be really cheap priced
I wished i lived closer to you james i would love to come and give you a hand if you needed it exhaust is looking very nice also your Vauxhall alloys are looking good keep up the good work love watching your videos
Can you cut it open to see that is making it so heavy might be soot
You have some corrosion in your boot, it is common for the high level brake light to leak as it has a stupid foam seal, the seal was not available on its own so i used clear silicon to seal it up and a second hand light. The water seems to find its way into the brake light unit once the seal has failed knackering it if you leave it too long! good video
hi bud i know it was a long time ago but where did you get the exhaust from and also its different to original back box so is it for a different model?
Great video. I know it was a few years ago now but where did you get the exhaust from. Cheers
I have the exact same problem and I need to change my exhaust. Do you have links or any other information about the new parts you bought? That would be very helpful!
Great video mate
Does anyone know what make exhaust this is???
On my Renault ,I just stuck thicker rubbers inside the original mountings , broke out the old rubber and now they stay in place permanently with gravity and weight, won’t shear again like the originals
Problem with these cheap pattern exhausts is they just don't last. I have one on my 05 Cooper that wasn't fitted that long ago and it's in a bit of a state. You'll probably find the 'stainless' tip will start rusting pretty quick too.
When mine starts blowing, I'll be fitting a proper catback for sure.
I guess one short term bonus however is they tend to be a bit less restrictive and sound better than the OE one so that's a plus.
When are going to refurb the mondeo wheels
do you know why the end of the backbox looks like that, i saw an interview with the minis designer and he said that at the big reveal at one of the motor shows the car wasnt finished and they needed something that looked like the tip of an exhaust so they used a soda can with the paint removed and people loved the aesthetic so much they decided to keep that look
where'd you get the exhaust from?
Use removable blue thread locker on the bolts bud, stops rust on the threads and keeps them secure :)
What coloured sockets are they please
where did you get that exhaust from? Cant find them that cheap anywhere
Where’s the exhaust from?? I want one
Hi there, are the mini one 1.6 90hp and mini cooper 1.6 116hp the same chassis and exhaust? I ask because my mum had a mini one side and wants the backbox replacing, I think I have found that exhaust you have in the video on ebay but they messaged me back saying it does not fit...?? Any info in return would be much appreciated.
Nice. Although those new bolts are definitely not stainless steel. Very rarely get SS bolts on cars as one they are not as strong as cold steel and two because of the balling effect when undoing/doing up the nut.
There’s a boot release cable under rear seats ....... no need to keep refitting battery 👍🏼👍🏼 Another excellent video James, loving this series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Vespa Morelli where ?
@@joshuawarrington1051 lift rear seats and you’ll see a loop to pull and release the boot 👍🏼
Good job, well explained...👍
8.8 is tensile rating. Grease bolts with copper slip and use copper slip for exhaust jointd
Link for the exhaust? I’ve got a 150k Mike R50 I use as a daily and the exhaust has just rotted away. Is this the eBay £52 jobby?
FYI- Underneath the middle part of the back seat cushion there should be a pull release for the boot. No battery needed to unlock it.
Whereabouts did you get your exhaust from?? My 04 Mini's exhaust is on its way out.
Seems to me, that it will be easier to install my new exhaust since it's OEM style and doesn't have the welded mounts in the rear.
Can you please link the exhaust? Thank you!
Where did you get the exhaust??
Where did u get the exhaust??
Where did you get your new exhaust from please?
Can you share the link for the exhaust?
Where you get the exhaust from?
Where u get the exhaust from?
where did you buy your exhaust mate ?
Give them rear brakes a strip down when you get chance. Looks like that disc has been getting hot. Probably seized on the slides.
FYI~there is a boot release under the rear seat, just lift the cushion.
Hi,
Where did you get the exhaust from at that price !!????
Chris
same one I had, sounds good with a decat
What make is it any links?
Remember you still need movement on the exhaust otherwise if you hit a hard bump in the road there is a slight chance of it cracking/snapping
Did anyone ever find out where this exhaust was from?
where did u buy this from???
The exhaust looks good. Instead of putting new tyres on that wheels, buy the Mini Cooper S wheels. That’s a nice upgrade! Great vid!!
What was the exhaust you bought?
Doing this on the on the misses car , used to love working on cars but no its just becoming a pain in arse. Had nothing but problems with the focus , corsa and mini over the last two months. Back box has rotted out just like yours i can stick my finger in it
How many miles does this car have?
What exhaust is that?
White stripes on the bonnet 👍
Them stones look comfy
👍👍
