    Yet another great ride, Dave. That Swainsley Tunnel was quite spectacular! The trains that used to run through it (until it closed in 1934) travelled at a maximum line speed of 15 mph, so you were travelling just slightly faster than they had.
    Re the speed demon with his trailer, they go that speed because they don't think. My brother-in-law lives in a farm lane area of the Midlands and always blats around blind corners in his SUV; one day he'll meet someone else going in the opposite direction and I sincerely hope it's not a motorcyclist. The bike rider will stand no chance.

    Evening Dave, you are indeed in my neck of the woods on this one, in more ways than one. The trail you crossed is the Tissington Trail, based on the railway track that ran from Buxton to Ashbourne, where I hire out pushbikes on the trail, part-time. The wee tunnel you rode through is just below my village, and Wetton Mill was a place I drank far too much tea when I was on duty as the local bobby - in Staffordshire incidentally!
    If you do come camping at Hulme End, you must call fr for a brew - all nationalities welcome! 😎

      Hi Martin, I will make sure I bring my passport with me!
      You sure do live and work in a lovely part of the country. When I was on the beat it was back streets of a rough inner city area of Leeds.
      I'm out for a ride today around Castleton.

    What a beautiful ride those little valleys, what a lovely place to live, we are very blessed in this country, when for my first ride on my 350 classic, went to half penny green air field. Unfortunately the cafe was shut as they are decorating so no coffee , I was shaking when I got off bike , felt very nervous riding, too many years gone by , very rusty and had trouble getting boot under gear leaver to change gear so I think I’ll be fitting a heal and toe much better.😊

    • @thatblokeonamotorbike
      @thatblokeonamotorbike  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi, it's brilliant you have your classic 350 now. It will feel strange for a while after a long period of not riding.
      Short rides, with plenty of stops and take it steady, it will all come back.
      When I had my bike training school I did lots of back to riding courses and just about everyone felt nervous at first.
      I had the same problem with the gear shift on my bike.
      I took the bolt out of the shifter and very gently eased it along the splines.
      You don't need to take it fully off, half way and move it up one spline. Press it back in and refit the bolt.
      Ride safe, Dave

    Hi Dave, the lovely tunnel you went through is Swainsley Tunnel, and was part of the Leek and Manifold Light Railway. It was a 2'6" narrow gauge railway that ran from Waterhouses to Hulme End through the Manifold valley. It closed in 1934 and the local authority bought the trackbed for use as a footpath and cycleway. The tunnel is the only bit used as a road. The station at Hulme End survives, and is well worth a visit on your next ride that way.

    • @thatblokeonamotorbike
      @thatblokeonamotorbike  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi. Thanks for the info I will be sure to visit the station next time I'm down there.
      The tunnel was really good.
      2ft 6 guage explains the size and it being straight.
      I drove a 15 inch guage steam train that went through a double track full size tunnel.
      Ride safe, Dave

    I always try and follow your route, even try some myself. The campsite looks to be run by the Royal Oak, entrance down the side of it. Rode the parts of the last one I'd never done before. Manifold valley is absolutely heaving in summer, literally thousands there. I take it you didn't know about the tunnel, the local landowner didn't want to see trains going past his house !!

    • @thatblokeonamotorbike

      @@thatblokeonamotorbike They were a bit rough down in that bottom what with the mud, gravel and potholes, and the single track blind up hill corners towards Ingbirchworth had me thinking "I really, really hope nothing comes the other way". I went out via Grenoside Woods/ Wortley and back via Crane Moor, Pilley and Wentworth.I had to smile, that lane with the grass down the centre in this video is Pasture Lane, very aptly named.
