Metal Shaping Techniques : How To Fabricate a Wire Form/Buck

- čas přidán 10. 05. 2021
- On this episode of Make It Kustom I'm fabricating a wire form buck that will help shape my template for the transmission tunnel and distributor cove on the 1931 Model A roadster. Using a MIG welder, 1/8" filler wire and some finger strength, I cover step by step how to make a wire form/ buck for metal shaping. The wire form is a great way to make even the most complicated shape patterns at home with simple tools. Unlike some wooden bucks, it's easy to see through the form underneath to check the progress of your panel.

One of the few CZcams channels that is really educational . In addition to having mad skills, you’re a good teacher!
I really appreciate that Mark, thanks!! We enjoy sharing our knowledge! We'll keep trying to come up with new topics to teach! If you have any suggestions, please let us know! Cheers!
100% agree.....your ability to go into those details sets you apart from others on CZcams. A big thanks for sharing your knowledge
yes, It finally educated me about importance of eye protection when welding :D

I just caught up with this one, and it's a good one!. I hate to be the "Nanny" viewer, but when I see something that should be addressed, I'll speak up, at least once. In case you or some viewers aren't aware, just squinting does nothing to stop the UV from the welding arc from affecting your eyes. If you are working around someone welding, bare minimum is a pair of clear safety glasses. They will block about 80% of the UV. If you are welding, use some sort of auto darkening shield, even if you are "Just Tacking". They even make auto darkening goggles now. I see in you and your channel the passion I have always had as a Mechanic. Not only cars, but anything mechanical. I would die if I couldn't work with my hands. You don't want to be in your 40's or 50's and have some eye doctor tell you you have irreparable damage to your eyes, and won't be able to do what you love anymore. End of lecture, carry on with the great work!
I really appreciate you speaking up on the subject I really didn’t understand or know that that was possible. I will be much more careful from now on thanks for saving my eyesight Eric
This explains a lot that Ron Clovel left out if the equation. Thanks for setting me straight! JD
found you 2 days ago and kept thinking, why you don't have a million subscribers yet. But in two days you have grown by 2500 so should be a million by years end. You are a natural at this!
I actually have no use for this information right now and maybe never will but I can't help but watch these videos. Your metal working skills are amazing and I've never seen someone explain metal crafting as well or as succinct. These videos are a true pleasure to watch.
David! This means a lot to me I really appreciate the feedback especially when you were not planning on using the info at the moment and still enjoy the content. Cheers!🙏
I install flooring. It's amazing the accuracy that can be accomplished with patterns.
Watching you make 3D patterns makes me feel like I'm back in 1st grade.
I'm about to watch the paper pattern video next. Maybe I'll feel like I'm in 4th grade after that one. 😁
Beautiful work and teaching vocabulary. 👍
Ha ha right on man! Thanks for watching
great instructional video- though beginners should note that Karl has spatter resistant hands and mastered the welding squint! Use caution when you try this at home kiddos
You have a gift and should be teaching in-person classes.
Thank you. Be well and stay safe.
There are a lot of video on you tube ....BUT.... this guy is top shelf. He has real skils. Luv his videos
Great video Karl. Working on a trans tunnel for my Shoebox and I came to this channel first. I knew you'd have a video!!!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time

Really cool tip about reinforcing the form before taking it out of the car.
Good choice of music. Fantastic advice as always.
Dude you can make anything!
So cool

You're a legend, great content, very educational!
I’m glad you like it cheers!
Fantastic! And he can weld better with his eyes closed than I can with a mask and both eyes open.
Awesome amigo!!!! Great tip, nice work!!!
Thanks so much 👊👊👊
This is the first time I’ve seen this technique and it looks great! I’ll definitely be giving this a shot. Thanks for the video. 🤙
You’re so welcome man thanks for watching
I found your post by accident but very happy I did . you are putting out really good content since I build my own cars one I am starting on soon is my 49 Mercury want frenched in stock tail lights which is a big deal because someone got rid of the original lights so I had to find a set to use . your content relates to what I have to do on my car befor a new repaint on it also . Thank you and God bless
You’re welcome Michael I’m so glad you found us welcome to the channel! Glad to hear that this continent will be helpful on your own build. Cheers!
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing!!!👍👍👍👍👍
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Couldn't think of a better way to explain the bend needing to be in shape w/o tension, other then maybe relating it to bending tubes and how they have that bend-back you have to account for. Great content, thank you.
Thanks a lot Brian! It’s pretty important and something I couldn’t grasp in the beginning
Great video, you explained it well, enjoyed it
Awesome! I'm glad I could explain it well
That’s truly amazing!
Thanks Terry!
Great video!!

Aprendo muito com seus vídeos! Seus vídeos tem um alto nível técnico.
i still havent bult/fabbed my trans tunnel on my 51 chev yet. i now know why. i didnt know to make a wire buck yet. Karl(spelled correctly this time) thanks again for an informative hot rodder how-to .
killing it bro!
Thanks Jerry 👊🤙🙏
I like your videos, well explained! Im learning a lot 😊
Glad to hear it!
Nice work young fella😎👍🤘👌
Thank you!
Hey guys Happy New Years too U All 🎉 project looking great 👍
Fantastic
Fascinating to watch it come together. Very cool technique using the welding wire to form the shape. Looking forward to seeing the paper templates. Thanks for sharing your expertise
Stoked you like the video man hope you enjoy the other ones too!
@@MakeItKustom I also subscribed to your channel. Great content and you do a great job describing what exactly you are doing. I feel if this kinda stuff isn’t passed on it will be a lost art.
I did something similar but bent up some sheetmetal that fit the floor/firewall area perfectly and replicated the car tunnel area on the welding table. Tacked the floor to the table and braced the firewall with scrap, keeping the same angles. Then traced the openings with a sharpie. Older ya get the less you want to bend and stoop inside a car lol
Still catching up on all your past content. This lesson expanded my mind in places I’ve never been but always wondered. Now I need to watch the paper template tutorial. Your a great teacher that explains very clearly what’s going on. 👍👍😎👍👍…….. It was hard to tell with the camera angle, but when you’re tacking without a hood, hopefully you’re orienting you head so the arc is completely shadowed by the nozzle. Closing your eyelids is not effective enough. 🤪 Fitzee Fabrications explains this very well in one of his earlier videos.
True craftsmanship👍 🇦🇺
Thanks Ricky!
Exelente trabajo
Thank you so much!
Hey, just my second video of yours I seen this morning and gotta say you definitely have potential in my opinion to be the next big CZcams personality (lack of a better term). I watched Derick from vice grip garage on his first couple of videos and sure nough he had definitely come along way but like you he had something there to begin with. Let's just say you captured my attention as I been needing another link to follow more recently. The model A you mentioned here that your working on, an excellent choice as well...
Thanks a lot for the feedback I really appreciate the support like this! The community has been so welcoming and we are lucky to be here!
Just found your Channel, great content .
Awesome! Welcome Glen!
How do you not have a million followers. Well explained, great tips, and lessons on proper tool use.
Thanks man hopefully will get there one day!
This guy is damn nuts.... what a metal craftsman is this man.... fantastic😘👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

You really should use your mask as the ultraviolet light passes through you lids.
Great work & learning a lot.
Oh that’s a new bit of information I didn’t realize thanks!

Ganz tolle Videos......sehr interessant und begeisternd 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Grüße aus Deutschland 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
🙏🙏🙏
Great video...just found your channel..happy new sub!
Great man! 🙏Welcome!
Watch his videos. Work on my 72 nova. Watch some more. Weld some more. Looking forward to driving this beast one day.
Wow !
I agree.
Nice video how to
Thank you
Like others I am glad I found you. Please do not burn your eyes welding it does not take much.
You are correct! I don’t want to burn my eyes either lol I’m glad you found us too!
It would be awesome if you could build a hot rod from the ground up. Something simple that guys can follow along with. I never grew up with a Dad that was into cars. I’ve been into them forever but my skills are limited. Love to learn this stuff to pass onto my kids.
Such a great idea man I’d like to do that on here
Great videos!! You are extremely talented not only metal working but also teaching!
I think it’s pretty cool you live in BC and this isn’t another channel coming from the US. Lol.
Keep up the good work and the excellent content! Looking forward to rewatching all your videos and learning and eventually putting the learnings to practice!
Thanks so much Paul I appreciate your feedback! I’m so glad that you are finding value in the videos!
This is an awesome technique! That’s 1/8 tig wire you used?
Yup you got it!
So well explained!!!
But why do we have to remove birdcage from the car?
Can we not mock-up the three fab panels with it in place?
I found it easier to have it on the table then crawling in the car. Thank you Christian!
The more I watch your content the more impressed I become with your acquired skill set and knowledge of your craft. I have to ask... With all this equipment and knowledge of design, why not piece together something of your own from scratch? I see you making some epic repairs to some great vehicles that deserve the work, but Im curious what you would do with a blank canvas and nothing but your creativity...
I’m working my way! Taking off bigger and bigger bites of bigger and bigger projects. After the Zephyr I think I will build something from scratch for real
Thank you so much Tim!
What size rod are you using? Great video.
👍

🙏🙏🙏
Cool how you put the wire buck together. But have you considered about of radiation your hands and eyes are being exposed to. Just a safety suggestion
Hi, would hot glue be an option, especially to glue the base of the wite frame to the panels? If it holds long enough te make the cage the advantage would be easy removal without trace.
Respectfully, W
I’m not sure if it would be strong enough but it’s definitely worth a shot?
✌✌👍👍👍👍😃
So did you make measurements of the engine and transmission before? It seems you just know where they are in there
Hey there! I did have the motor and tranny mocked up in there in a previous video and did take measurements, which I don’t think I filmed. Sorry it didn’t make it in to this video.
Curious to know the time you put into making the wire buck.
A couple hours well spent
You should show how long it takes for the people that just don’t know what it takes
LOL I don't want to scare anyone off
@@MakeItKustom 😂
Are those rivets there to just hold the piece in place ?
Yes
Try metal shaping with pipes and hammers nothing else.
Can.i make a Aventador panel using this technique
You can make any panel with this technique
How well would a tig work? Could you fusion weld the wire together?
I seem to get better results with mig. I’m sure tig would work too.
Im good with mig but Ive never tig. I want to learn. Im not bad with silicone bronze
@@lewiskemp5893 when I did my last year of autobody I had a chance to try silicone bronze, very cool stuff. I would like to try it again.
@@darkhorsecustoms2194 I like it. Welds like aluminum but doesnt heat up the panel as bad
1/8 filler wire.. from a welding store? Or? Sticks of it or a roll? Asking because i am not familiar
I just use Welding filler wire
What do you do with a welder's tan when you work without a mask?
I know it’s a bad habit 🤦🏻♂️
@@MakeItKustom I do the same. 😁
@@MakeItKustom lol. I do it too and we know better. Lol my safety glasses have weld burns
Would using a spot welder work instead of a mig?
Hey Robert, I think it should be possible, however I think a MiG welder would be easier as it requires only one hand, and you can use the other to keep the wire pieces secure. You should try it out and let me know if you do! Thanks for watching!
A spot welder jaws wont open far enough to fit. I ran into that problem friday putting a new roof on a Honda
Дружище нехватает перевода на русский и цены бы тебе не было , а так всё круто.
Hi. Its me again. Whats your name and where is your shop. I work for dealership bodyshop in Albany Ga. Cant name it. They get butthurt mentioning on internet unless they do it😀
Hey Lewis! My name is Karl and the shop is in Langley BC lol
looks like a seat for a motorcycle
Certainly could be made the same way
am i the only one to safety squint when watching someone weld in a video ?
Lol definitely not
When I was your age all we had was coat hangers.
