  • Hey guys! I’m Alexandra and I film makeover videos to show you how to achieve a stylish, cozy home on a budget - even if you rent.
    Today we’re in my friend Holly’s basement studio apartment. Some people call them bachelor apartments, but essentially they’re one-room living spaces with little to no divide between each room. Holly recently moved in and she’s enlisted me to help her divide her bed from her kitchen, add in a dining table that doubles as a prep space and create a functional entryway. This one's going to be a challenge but I'm determined to do it for under $500.

      That was my first thought, too! That way, I think the bar table could be moved a little further sideways from the stove, maybe even a little towards the center of the living area.

    I like the pub height table. And as for accessing the oven, I would have mounted casters on the bottom of it that lock. That way, she could use it as an island prep area when preparing food.

      @mhurtou Před 5 lety +78

      NaturallyTiTi I agree! The space planning could definitely be improved. It would of made more sense to have her living/eating area separated from her sleeping area. This is also more functional due to her closet and bathroom are in that area.

    • @Lucy-xy6ww
      @Lucy-xy6ww Před 5 lety +31

      I strongly agree, the space was there just not utilized correctly. Switching the room would have given more functionality. Even by placing a cube organizer or an armoire sold at IKEA (very cheap)along with the curtain, it would seperate the entry and bedroom and it would still give her privacy and more storage. In the kitchen area after switching the rooms, just by adding stools to the table or even an island in its place ( they sell many kinds) would have given her an eating area. Many ways that could have been.

    • @gabylovely
      @gabylovely Před 5 lety +31

      NaturallyTiTi I AGREE!!! The stove being so close to the bed definitely made me uneasy. Also, the way that table was RIGHT INFRONT of the stove with no room for the person to stand to cook made me uncomfortable. I agree that the living area and kitchen should’ve been put toghether & the bed on the other side. Still adding the divider since it’s close to the door, but it would’ve opened the space so much more. Adding a rug so it doesn’t feel/seem so cold. Idk, in my opinion if I’m calling my “designer” friend I definitely expect more change than this.

    • @pamelaatkinson5710
      @pamelaatkinson5710 Před 4 lety +5

      Try to work on that. Fear and stress are not healthy, especially when they aren't rational. There is plenty of space between the stove and the curtains. Look at where the curtains are in any kitchen. Some are covering windows within a couple feet of the stove and no one worries because they know between the length of the curtain and the placement of the flame, the two can't reach each other.

    If you were going to spend $200 on a table, the Norden (from Ikea) would have been much better. It has storage, can be opened up to one leaf or two, and can sit off as a narrow bar if you don't open it up at all. It seemed like a much better choice and it is actually what I bought when I lived in a studio.

      I have a white Norden in my craft room. Can confirm, it's fantastic and can be easily tucked away or pushed against a wall (I used sticky felt feet and it glides on the floor). I love your use of bedcurtains! I have always loved the concept since I was a child. It was nice seeing them "in action", plus I know what I need to build the track. I love a change in my rooms. With curtains I can change them out to add color, see seasonal ones or use a cricut to create shapes to add to new or thrifted curtains. Thank you so much for choosing bedcurtains and explaining how to hang them where you found the items needed. I love all your work that I have watched on CZcams. Also would love to see you decorate a small balcony space in a practical way.

    I lived in studio apts that tiny for years. One idea I would add is a headboard with some sort of storage for tissues, a water bottle and my phone. I got one from the thrift store and it was amazing. I’ve had it for some 25 years. I even used it in one studio behind my couch. Because it had sliding storage I kept my vhs tapes and dvd movies in there so they were hidden but still easily accessed when I wanted to see a movie. Cuz I didn’t have cable tv or even tv reception there. Now it’s next to my bed and not only is my bedside table but since it’s next to a window is my cats fav place so has her fav cat bed on it.

    If your friend does any real cooking then that table will have to go. You need to be able to stand in front of a cooker properly and while I suppose it can be turned to the side when the cooker is in use, it's still going to take up a lot of space. A wall-hung/folding table would have been a much better idea, with a folding chair which could be hung on the wall out of use.

I get sad really easy so I’m trying to change the lighting somehow, I’m starting by painting the cabinets white and I will try to get fairy lights for above my bed for late night reading. I plan on getting sheer curtains and mirrors to let more light in and maybe down the road looking into putting in bigger windows. Any RV space saving ideas? You increased the space around the entry, added storage in her closet area with the coat rack, cleaned up and added visual interest in the living area, gave her a desk/table space in the kitchen and privacy in her bedroom!!! Great improvement! I might have personalized the curtain between the living space and bathroom by using a block or square of floral or an initial or some other kind of color or art print in the center. Seems too long a span of white. But hey, consider the source. I could never have done what you did.

      Could go trash to treasure route, but for new, that is the cost for the table, chair, ceiling rail, shelf, wall hook, painting and frame, curtains, coat rack and flowers and dish and accents. NOT just a table and chair.

    Some of these comments are absurd. When living in a small space, it’s all about compromise. Putting things in different places, getting rid of furniture or Knick-knacks you loved since a child, or having furniture that can be moved to function in many ways. So what if she has to move a 5-lb table to have more access to her stove. Her apartment isn’t even that big. She’d move it like 3-4 feet LOL. Alexandra is giving this space the feel of 3 different rooms any way possible. She explained that tables are a struggle in a small space and sometimes that is all people can afford. But I DEFINITELY love this because you can lose a lot of the “home-y” feel with studios and Alexandra always knows how to get the most out of small spaces. It’s really crazy that you guys are going so hard on her but she’s a professional and some of you....might not even know how to hang a frame.🤭

    Alexandra-->> idea! why wouldn't you have used that IKEA folding bar table? Its mounted on the wall and you open it and close it against the wall!! I thought for sure that is what you were going to do with that space to further save the space (although its not as pretty as the wood table)!! PS I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!! I get excited whenever there is a new upload!!

    • @AlexandraGater
      @AlexandraGater  Před 5 lety

      I actually thought about using that table but Holly wanted something really sturdy and something with lots of prep space which is why I went with the bar table. But the table you suggested is a really great idea for a small space. Thanks for the comment and thank you for watching!

    Everyone's saying they wish the living room was next to the kitchen instead of the bed, but I would HATE if I had people over and I had to make them walk past where I sleep to hang out and watch TV. The issue here is with where the kitchen is located, and it's presumably a rental so they can't really do anything about that. I think the layout is as good as it can be under the circumstances.

    A sliding wood partian on a track wood solve this. I saw it on another studio video and it was AMAZING it was not a solid wood panel it had like a spindle area. It looked exspensive and not just like your trying to cover an area. It was similar to a sliding closet door.

    My biggest challenge is that I have a lot of fiber arts equipment-a loom, a spinning wheel, sewing machine, and I have trouble finding spots to tuck them away. I use my desk to wind bobbins and weigh fiber and sew, but I’m about to start grad school and need to use my desk for school!
