      I am wondering if it makes sense to have a rag doll like in 3d modelling and animation studios hooked up to see the neuros controlling it would help to create a virtual avatar and traing with it and later map it to an optimus to help to move and manipulate the world. I get the feeling that showing friends and family or even onesself that these feelings arent just imagination could help to keep sane at that point in time after such a big injury. Also i am super curious if they made imagery of the healing process of the electrodes and if the tissue around the electrodes is being more and more integrated physically like another neuron. I mean the brains neuroplasticity is constantly changing connections, does the brain actually create connections the electrodes? There is so much stuff around the process of healing and scaring on tissue i would like to know if they made any brain imagery to visualise how things are connected. Thanks for being here Nolan and thanks Farzad and Hans for the Interview. Great stuff. Maybe we should call it Nerdalink for the time being :D

  • @Synthwalk
    @Synthwalk Před 5 dny +12

    The reason why he has to first map his finger movement to the cursor before he can move the cursor just with *intent* is because of the position of the electrodes... The electrodes are not positioned in the area of his brain where the intent of moving the cursor happens, think of it like this: intent to move mouse happens on area "A" of the Brain, and the nauralink is implanted on area B.. when Nolan tries to move the cursor just with intent, his brain is firing on area A, so the neuralink (which is in area B) isn't receiving any signal. But nolan can make a bridge in his brain between area A and B, and he does that by mapping the intent of moving his finger (which naturally happens on area B) to the mouse cursor.
    After mapping his finger to mouse: Area A (where mouse intent is) sends signals to area B (where neuralink/finger signal is) which sends signals to the app that moves the cursor.

    41:46 Farzad and Hans, this should be the moment where open source comes in. You have brilliant people watching what you are creating. You’ve had brilliant ideas. Some of us have good ideas. We should be sharing those in a place where all of us could pick out the best ideas to try and see how it affects the process. And if we can get feedback even better. several of the neural link ideas that I’ve had revolved around software for specialized computer mice and accessories used in either streaming or video editing. Different key commands, and stuff work similar to how Nur Link works in that compound thoughts could bring up different results. Earlier, you all were explaining how thinking of an Internet browser that’s visible on the screen could be enough to open the Internet browser just because it’s visible. The computer accessories could allow for access to different models, but with Nur link, all you have to do is think about the accessory, and which button you would push, and a variety of menus could open up where you can then click on the thing you want. But that could also interface to physical benefitas well. Just a thought.

    wow, fantastic! I can imagine how the 'input' to the brain will work. It's not "actually writing" but it will send signals that will be received. Writing seems permanent and that's later, but first receiving input. I'm trying to think how to simplify it... let's say a red dot of light you want to flash at x/y coordinate. That simple thing is a conversation between the brain and the algorithm (uh, machine learning/AI?) For the dot to be red, the brain has to tell the AI "what is red to me" and then the AI can remember and send the signal and the brain receives and the brain sends feedback... how close to red it is and brightness and location, etc. And then it's calibrated, the two calibrate. And then maybe test different coordinates and different shapes - and pretty soon the user is receiving a stick-figure animation. This is now input to the brain from an external source. Okay next the AI uses film techniques and it uses zoom, the stick figures zooms into its face and it has a drawn facial expression, and then a camera is imagined as the source of the image so it's no longer flat 2D. Now the camera circles around the stick figure in 3D action - cue horror movie soundtrack and the stick figure animates in time to the soundtrack. Okay now the user is having an emotional experience... yes? In this example it is a coordination between the brain and the AI and creative storytellers in a new medium of mind movies. Yes? Jump scares to the brain?

    There's much "something else going on here," Farzad. There's a universe of complexity that we don't understand, and likely that we aren't even aware of. The universe is large and its complexity is larger.
    But we can live simply with uncertainty, and give probabilities to propositions that we continue to adjust based on the best evidence and critical thinking we can harness. We don't have to embrace "faith," superstition, or organized superstition to eliminate the uncertainty in our minds and make us feel good. Faith and superstition are too easily hijacked by con men, demagogues, and extremists eager to amplify polarizing dynamics and denigrate or subjugate "other" populations.

I'm curious to see how far this tech goes and how the team will eventually tackle problems associated with spectrum disorders and other mental illnesses.

    We’re already doing all of that. People who would like to be part of the conversation with you are listening to it happening instead of having the conversation themselves. I’m sure there’s plenty of listeners who, if there was a button available, would click it and join to chat with you. we constantly follow the lives of people we care about. If my day is sad, boring, monotonous, etc. I will click into my friend who went to Mexico for the week, and enjoyed 10 minutes of beach time when I didn’t actually get to see any beach today. my view every day is incredible. The mountains around me are amazing, but the scenery in Vietnam along the ocean escapes that are caught in National Geographic films often consume my evenings because it’s lovely. I already pull myself out of the world. (most of the time voluntarily for me) to experience things that aren’t happening in my immediate surroundings. I think will just enhance that connection, similar to the way immersion videos or the sphere in Vegas will often include scents and smells to enhance the experience. This is just HD sharing in its infancy.
