Difference here, is that the ref yellow-carded the defender and awarded a penalty try to NZ. The same should have happened in Oz v Sa match. Poor referring in that match.
The ball can travel foreward relative to a stationary point on the pitch as long as it travels back relative to the motion of the passer. So if the passer is travelling foreward at say 10 meters per second, passes backwards but the ball is travelling forewards still at say 5meter per second, even though the ball goes foreward its a good pass.
