- Jeff and Rose and their 5 girls (ages 10, 12, 14, 15, 17) have been living off grid on their northern Canadian homestead for 8 years.
They started with a bare 20 acres, without even road access, and have since built their house, shop and all sorts of homestead type of infrastructure; animal pens, barns, guest house, rain water collection, gravity fed water storage, composting toilets, solar system etc.

Wow. I will turn 42 and we are about 80% in completing the homestead (house, root cellar, greenhouse, workshop, barn, chicken coop, sauna). It has been a lot of hard work and the system has made it quite difficult for us. We had difficulties with building permits and the property tax&home insurance alone is becoming stressful (we are in Nova Scotia. Very high cost of living with very low wages). We were starting to look at Ecuador but we are not financially independent enough yet. Also I am getting tired and don't know if I would want to start all over again especially at the age that you mentioned (65!). But glad to hear that you are doing well and I wish you the best! Hey, if you don't have a mortgage, like I don't, maybe do as I have done:
I don't have homeowners insurance!
Instead, I have $100K renters insurance. I own my home outright, but I created a living trust, it being the actual owner with me being the administrator and I "rent" my home from my trust for $1 a year (legal trick).
My homeowners insurance jumped from $1,200 to $3,900 for no other reason than greed on the insurance company's part.
My $100K renters insurance costs me $211 a year. The decision to switch was a no-brainer.
Plus, with homeowners insurance, losses are "adjusted" ( read that, bend over and spread 'em).
Renter's insurance pays replacement value on personal property losses, no "adjusting" and no hassle.
I built this house (all welded steel and concrete). I can just build another one, if an EF5 Tornado sweeps this one to Oz, for no more than $20K in materials. I'm a retired plumbing & electrical contractor and certified welder.
I homestead in North Texas.
I started out late ... I was the big corporate guy commuting to the Middle East or USA monthly, expense account, 6 digit salary...but it all changed 19 years ago. I realised I would always need the salary to live that way.. and I hated it. Now I live in a simple life - 2 bed cottage in Ireland on 12 acres and am retired at 55 on a far "less than minimum wage" pension for the rest of my life.....with sheep, horses, dogs, hens, ducks a cat and ....it was totally worth it !
I am about to do the same at 57. The area doesn't matter, what will be on offer does. It is liberating to think that i dont know where in the UK I will be this time next year. I am too late to provide the smallholding life to my 2 adult kids but my grandkids will have fun. That is if my kids produce any!

He found them when I suggested that he STOP WATCHING "NEWS" and obsessing about impending doom and START WATCHING HOMESTEADING and prepper videos that show us the way to freedom. First, I was blown away that he listened to me🤣 Then I was amazed that I hadn't found this channel first🤨 Then we just started binge watching these girls build tiny houses and pack out elk they shot, and catch 20lb salmon... 😳❤❤❤❤❤WTG GRIDLESSNESS!!!

I love there vids and homesteady too,me and my wife are starting late we are 65 and starting a 5 acre homestead 60 miles from the closest town of any size, we know it will be tough but our hearts are there already!!
And the only reason you can say "it will be tough" is because you have expectations, which you can either drown in or throw to the winds. God Bless, and love one day at a time.

First time HOMESTEADY, Long time Gridlessness watcher. I grew up on a working ranch so money came in once a year and work was never done you just start where you left off when it got dark. We are dept free and property and houses are our retirement fund. Every house we build and sell we reinvest and live simply. Willing to sacrifice is how we get ahead. All of our vehicles is over 14 years old. I lost everything and was homeless and never begged. My wife's family build there own house then lost it in a flood and lived in the barn till they built again. Knowing that you can do it from experience certainly helps. We also put our Faith in God's plan for us.
I enjoy watching Rose and Jeff's kids get after it and work well(and never letting Jeff off the hook). The opposite channel would be called Gutlessness. Be Blessed.
The world needs more people like you and your family. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones. ✌

I'm 54 from the states but have lived in Spain for many years. I have been talking with my 3 sons to make the move back to the states to buy land and start our adventure and homestead. Great video to see how others make it work. 🙏🇺🇸💪

Now you need to sink a well, get water filter, store food, toilet paper, medications, etc because we don't know what the Denty Twenties will hand out.
My husband and I are doing the same thing, in a little different way. Our land was "rough" land, and still is in many ways. We have done all of our clearing with a push mower and a sawzaw. We are transitioning to living there full time. My husband will continue to work for a few years after we move, but, I will be on the land full time. We are very close to our 50's, and it is a lot of hard work, but, so we'll worth it!

This is the best video I have ever seen. My wife and I are 23 years old and have a 9 month old daughter and live in Alaska. We live in the biggest city in Alaska, Anchorage. I am so tired of living and working my life away in this city and always being away from my family. Everything these guys have done is exactly what we want to do. SO great! It's so refreshing to see people like this. My husband and I know we have a good life from the outside looking in but it just seems like we are always going backwards financially. Luckily we bought in a good area and would be able to buy and built in certain areas of BC. It's amazing how we have normalized debt to be such a part of life, but it def. doesn't have to be. Love watching you guys add all the accomplishments as the girls grow and two beautiful young women. I got myself debt-free about 10 years ago and have been homesteading most of my adult life, the last 10 by myself. Yes it's hard work but infinitely rewarding.

I have been following both of your You Tube families for a few years and have throughly enjoyed the videos.
I'm 59 and have raised 5 wonderful adults, and am presently my mother's caregiver. When the next stage begins of my life, I'm hoping for it to be on raw land. My age and disabilities will factor into how and how long it takes to do things, but that won't stop me. Water, fire (heat) and shelter. Who "needs" crown mouldings anyway?

One of your videos came up on my recommended You Tube page and as soon as I saw the landscape I knew you where in British Columbia. I live in Abbotsford, BC. I'm hoping to start my homestead in 4-5 years.
Very new concept to me, all of this. My takeaway from it seems to be....the 3 P’s;
1) Perspective - how?
2) Position - finances?
3) Purpose - why?

This is awesome! I assume you home school your girls. Our mom and dad did the same thing with 2 girls and 4 boys. We lived in a family sized one room tent and us boys slept in a large leantoo that we built out of logs and and a tarp. We lived for six months in the s/w Oregon forest and 7 more months beside the Verde river in Arizona. It was AWESOME! Mom and dad home schooled all of us children until we graduated.
What you are doing is wonderful! For entertainment our mom read to us at night and we played SCRABBLE and various card games. We were closer as a family because of it.
What an inspiration you guys are for us, if God willing, 2021 will be the year for me and my family to jump into this adventure, along with other brothers and sisters in Christ.

I live in a little cabin off-grid. I haul water and fill a 250 gallon tank in my loft room and have gravity from there. Hot water from my very old McClary Charm kitchen wood cook stove. Wood heat. Small generator. Planning my solar system. Outdoor toilet.
Loved the video!! You can work to live,, or live to work!! Wife & i did it 20 years,, grew 90 % of our food,, started a co-op so we could buy Organic food that we couldn't grow,, it's all about having good food & plenty of it!! No paper down the hole in your outhouse,, saves room & keeps the smell down,, burn it ... Pee in a bucket pour around your fruit trees,, they'll love it,, but don't keep it over a day... Buying a tractor farm with a backhoe & buckett is cheaper than having someone build the driveway.,, build your own,, dig a well,, rock it up,, or use cedar logs,,, 15 feet deep should be be fine!! The world needs more families like yours,, greenhouse build onto the south side of your cabin would extend & help with the food production.. Fresh salad all winter.. love love loved it!!!

I saw your family hunting for mountain goat, but you caught nothing. Well sometimes that really happens. Your kids are awesome. So good for them to enjoy and learned many outdoor stuff. They are too fortunate to see natures beauty. I admired your decision to bring your family off-grid. I think life off grid is simple but less stress. In our place now, our govt is encouraging families to adopt their plan of "Going back to the Province" in view of the covid pandemic. Your videos seems right on time if we are to go off grid too. We just became debt free this year, and we are in the process of buying 10 acres down in Florida! It is a truly amazing feeling to not be tied down by debt, to not have that feeling that your lives are owed to someone. I am sharing our journey through CZcams to inspire others as well! It is possible, and it is worth it ❤️.
