Tofu60 2.0 ft Nixies on CF plate

  • Recently I have made some changes to the newest Tofu version, by swapping the 1.2mm PCB and the FR4 plate from the default package to the 1.6mm non-flex cut PCB, and a custom non-flex cut CF plate, which altered the sound in a surprisingly good way!
    So yeah, imo a keeb with a decent non-flex PCB and plate would significantly improve its sound that could match the high-end ones.
    Specs:
    - Tofu60 2.0
    - Plate: Custom non-flex cut CF plate
    - Switch: Nixies (burned-in 2m, L+F) and BCP on stabs
    - Keycap: GMK Striker
    - Artisan: It's a clone LOL, but I like how detailed it has been made
    - No foam or mod

    How would you say swapping to non-flex cut PCB & Plate changed the sound?
    I see people taping the flex cuts on the Tofu 2.0. So I wanted to know what’s so “bad” about it (bad is a strong word).

      I have also tested the default plate and PCB that came with the Tofu's package, and I must say they are not that "bad". The PCB, for instance, only has 2 flex cuts, so applying tape to them doesn't really affect the overall sound. When you mentioned the Tofu being "bad" here, I thought it could also be referred to as a somewhat "thin" sound. While I may not be an expert in describing sounds, I could explain that the term "thin" sound refers to a smaller, higher frequency sound produced when the sound escapes through flex cuts. Considering the price of the Tofu60, which is an entry-level keyboard, this characteristic is perfectly acceptable. In fact, it sounds much better compared to other entry-level keyboards I have tried foamless (which surprised me).
      To mitigate this issue, one can opt for long-poled switches or loud switches like Zaku or Neon instead of Nixies, Mx black, or Vintage black, which require specific configurations to produce good sound. However, more discerning users may notice that this "thin" sound quality might make it slightly challenging to fully appreciate the unique sound characteristics of the switches of a well-designed board would bring (well-rounded and clear sound). That's why I believe that the 1.6mm PCB and non-flex plate are the better alternatives compared to the original option provided by KBDfans.
      In conclusion, imo the Tofu60 2.0 is a well-rounded keyboard in its category, and with some minor adjustments to the PCB thickness and the number of flex cuts in the plate, it has the potential to achieve even higher quality in a higher class of keyboard.

I've been into mechanical keyboards for a while now but it's my first time having a keyboard with a flex-cut PCB. I'm still exploring whether I like it or not. Right now I have a Tofu65 2.0 with some Gateron Baby Kangaroos on the most flexy configuration I could get. After a while I might switch to my Alu plate to see the difference in sound of a "stiff" configuration

    Which 1.6 PCB did you use? Did you have to change the daughterboard as well?

      I used the zed60 from Mechlovin: mechlovin.studio/products/mechlovin-zed60-unikorn-compatible-pcb. You might need a slightly longer JST connector to match it also, no need to change the daughterboard.

      ⁠@@mjpty I used an alu plate for my Tofu 2.0 and it didn’t sound very thin, I think with some louder switches it can sound fairly loud
