    What she forgot to mention is hedgehogs can eat:
    -boiled, unseasoned chicken
    -cook, unseasoned eggs
    -berries
    -apples
    -bananas
    -Grain free cat food
    As treats, of course.

    The footage of the hedgehog outside is not of a pet pygmy hedgehog. That was a wild European hedgehog and nobody should have one of those as a pet, they are protected and in severe decline. Leave them in the wild unless they are sick, then get them to a rescue fast.

    They belong in the wild. We currently have two females living in our garden. We provide a nesting box along with supplying dust free hay that they take into the nesting box. We also provide daily hedgehog food under cover and film them every night watching for when they begin to hibernate.
    We have zero physical contact with them, they come and go to forage as they please, we are thankful they choose to use the nesting box allowing us an peek into their lives.

    If you want a healthy hedgehog DO NOT give a hedgehog manufactured 'hedgehog food'
    It does not contain enough protein. Imagine living off of a kale smoothie every day of your life for every meal.. that's what manufactured hedgehog food is like for a hedgehog. I recommend a dry cat food formula that has the neutrients for a hedgehog. If you search up a list of suitable cat foods one will come up. I love the blue buffalo brand for my boys if you are interested. It is worth spending a bit more of there food because as they are a small animal, they use up food a lot slower. Btw, I am not saying you should never give your hedgehog manufactured hedgehog food, and a little bit from time to time is fine, but it is not enough for them. It is designed for a few extra calories for wild hedgies. wow I can't believe you read all of this 😂

    Doc, be aware porcupines cannot "shoot out their quills"..ie cannot detach their quills like arrows. The quills are detached by an animal coming in direct contact with them. The quills have unique barbs making them painful and difficult to remove. As one who has removed hundreds of quills from dogs faces, trust me.

    • @ellis20022
      @ellis20022 Před 7 lety +15

      I think by "shoot out" i think she meant they can detacth from the porcupine, but hedgehog quils don't come off of their bodies. And Hedgehogs aren't relatted to porcupines, they're related to things like shrews and moles.

    • @jemma3304
      @jemma3304 Před 7 lety +12

      I'm really late but hedgehogs can lose their quills. Just like cats lose hair and snakes shed skin, they can fall out. Trust me. That's why if you get a hedgehog you need to make sure you vacuum afterwards if you have carpet flooring.

      You know it carries rabies? Really? How do you know it carries rabies? You should have researched all of this BEFORE you got it. Don't bath it unless it gets dirty and no more than monthly of you destroy all the natural oils.

    • @daniellewinn5774
      @daniellewinn5774 Před 8 lety

      Very rarely will a hedgehog bite because their instincts are defensive and they only want to defend themselves. Even if they are nervous or grumpy, they will probably not bite. They are however, pretty hard to take care of because they require that the temperature is always just right for them and their cages need to be cleaned often.

      my hedgehog bite me..but they just bite smoothly not the hard one..they usually bite when i play full day with them..it showed that they are tired enough and need to rest..but they surely bite..my friend's hedgehog also bite her..but sometimes it will be painful..but not until the blood comes out..but just endured it..

    I have a question;what do you do if your hedgehog unexpectedly has babies? I just got my hedgehog roughly 5 weeks ago and just today I returned home to find that she had given birth. I was feeding her when I heard one of them after she came out of her hide for a little food. She's my first hedgehog and I don't know what to do now that there's babies.

      Contact the place you got them from. Make sure the mom has plentiful food and water and extra shelter in the meantime

    Hey, i have a hedgehog, i got him around july, and he is still jumpy and defensive. I handle him as often as I can, but he lives at my moms house, so i only get to see him half the time, [shared custody] and once i pick him up, he unfurls immediately, but when i sneeze or cough or make a loudish noise or movement, he scares into a ball. How can i help???

    • @HogsBum
      @HogsBum Před 6 lety

      Stop sneezing and coughing on him. Loud noises scare them. They have really bad eyesight and rely on smell and sound. Be quiet around him, move slowly, turn off TV and radio then he should clam down.

    • @zoeybandhauer2054
      @zoeybandhauer2054 Před 6 lety

      Hogs Bum, i try my best not to sneeze or cough, and i dont do it on him, i always set him down if i can or at least turn away. I'm always quiet around him, and reduce the loud noises as much as possible, but most hedgehogs dont really flinch as much when there's a loud noise, so im not sure how to get him used to the noise.
