- Jessi introduces what hedgehogs are, where they came from, when they starting living with humans, and how to take care of them as pets.
*Gloves are not recommended for normal interactions with hedgies. Jessi used gloves during this video because Groucho's quills are extra sharp and Jessi had an eczema flare up at the time. Jessi normally handled him without gloves and as Groucho aged he became more relaxed during handling, as a youngster us was unusually "grouchy". He lived to be 7.5 years old.

Huh. Never heard about people NOT liking hedgehogs in their gardens before.
Here in Sweden we are encouraged as kids to be nice to them, and finding one in your garden is equal to seeing a rainbow in the amount of happiness it brings to a child (in my experience).
Also, as a European, I find the domesticated hedgehog weird. It doesn't look right for me, as I am more used to the European hedgehog. But is's still cute.

I had one growing up in high-school. Mine was unusually social and loved to snuggle.
I was looking after a wild hedgehog just a few weeks ago! :D They're endangered in the UK and one was sniffing around my house in the middle of the day (nonono should never be out in daylight) so I warmed him up, weighed him and then after a quick snack he was out again. I put out cat food for him for a couple of weeks but he seems to be hibernating now :D
We used to live in Trondheim, Norway, and we had a European hedgehog that used to visit our garden some evenings. He was very cute and didn't seem afraid of humans. But he fell into the basement window well a few times and needed to be rescued - not the smartest hedgie on record.
Neither blue nor fast, are we sure that's a hedgehog?

We had a hedgie for over 7 years and LOVED HER! We're about to get our second. Minis was very friendly and curious. She never balled up once she was comfortable in our home after getting her as a baby. Just like any other animal, the more you socialize it, the happier it will be. Minnie was a very picky eater but she did well on great quality cat food and mealworms and occasional other other treats.

Not all chordates have vertebrae. For example sea squirts and hagfish, which just have notochords made out of cartilage. Vertebrates are chordates that all have a spine made out of vertebrae, though.
I really love the what, when, and how series! You guys should do more of these, especially since theres so many common pets that aren't just dogs and cats anymore! :)
The hedgehog is probably grumpy because he’s not used to your smell. Those gloves prevent him from smelling you, if you hold him with your hands he won’t be so grumpy.

A friend of mine used to have a really sweet and cuddly hedgehog that just absolutely adored him. He was pretty sociable with me and any other guests/friends who took the time to introduce themselves gently, but the hedgehog just loved the owner; it was really cute.

My hedgie he is the most miserable pet ever, but just when I get ready to sell him he becomes super cuddly. Drives me nuts, my guy hates insects but loves carrots??? She also forgot to mention you must clean the wheel EVERY day, they love to run and shit EVERY where on the wheel.
bayboy49 Their mood changes a lot. He's probable grumpy if you wake him during the day. After holding him for a while he should be more calm.

I saw your previous video on the basics of animal enrichment ( Behavioral Enrichment ). In a future video, I'd love to see more specifics, such as: Which animal needs the least enrichment? Which animal needs the most? And, if different, which animals love it most and which are hard to please? And where do you look for new ideas?
I'm always trying to think of new things for my cats to explore (both physically - via cardboard mazes and other structures - and with their other senses). It can be a challenge with our very elderly cat (17 years), but the younger ones (5 years and 8 years) are game for just about anything. I've actually been getting a lot of good ideas from places like Big Cat Rescue (it's amazing how much overlap there is between what big cats and little cats enjoy).
I have a pet hedgehog when I first got him he never came out of his ball but with a couple weeks of work he is very playful.
My daughter has one. We rescued him from a home he was being neglected by. We were instructed by many not to use wood shavings because they can get shards in their eyes. He doesn’t like people but we still take him out a half hour every night for the last 5 years. When we got him he was only fed dry cheap cat food, had an igloo hut he couldn’t fit in, no toys or heat source, nothing to roll under and hide. I spent $500 on him in the first 24hrs. My daughter named him Atlas.
Love these little guys, always have, and have considered getting one as a pet. Having watched this though, especially what you said at the end, I think I will reluctantly give up my dream of getting one! These videos are a great service, thanks :)
hedgehogs are now part of the order Eulipotyphla, meaning 'well fat and blind' and there closest relatives are shrews, moles and solenodons. The later three were originally part of the order soricomorpha, but from recent genetic testing, scientists found out that this group is paraphyletic. Meaning that from it's last common ancester it includes all of its descendants, but not all of its descendants, so scientists reclassified soricomorpha and erinaceomorpha into Eulipotyphla.
I've always loved hedgehogs but I don't have right temperament for them. Thank you for all your videos. Your passion are respect for all the varied animals you care for is truly amazing.

Also, I would recommend people order a couple of those build it yourself storage units, ye kno, the ones you can make the shape yourself and click it together? We ordered 2 for a reasonable price from amazon and now our hedgehog has probably more than triple the space of most hedgehogs cages I see on the internet and we also made it multi platformed for him to adventure around via ramps we made! :)

I had a hedgehog "pet" as a kid. With "pet" i mean it was a wild hedgehog that wandered in to our garden one day, and my grandma started feeding it and we built it a dark wooden box with hay it could sleep in, and it kinda just decided to stay =) we never took it indoors though, it was a wild animal after all, but it didn't mind being pet.

Guy, it's very easy and plain to take care of this little animals. They are very cute and friendly when they know you. Trust me, I've got one.
The reason why you might think they're not good pets. You just have to see more videos and eventually they'll be more comfortable with you.

Wonderful little creatures.
Their spines also make great shock absorbers. As hedgehogs are quite clumsy, this can be useful if they fall from a height - the gravity will automatically make them roll into a ball and evolution does the rest

After bathing an IR lamp at the right temp would be good or if they like it a fan at the right setting or make a burrow with some blankets and let them dry inside make the hole as small as you can or partially close it as soon as the hedgehog is settled inside. Remember the last one is just a temporary shelter because I don't know how the moisture might affect the permanent shelter in the cage.

Jessi, God knows I love your work, but allow me to be pedantic! "A vertebrae" is like saying "a cats." They do have a vertebral column made of many vertebrae.

I have had a number of hedgehogs in my garden this summer. I live in eastern England. I always leave food and water out for them. They only come out at night so can sometimes be difficult to see.

1997, Saudi Arabia, PAT SITE 2 - the hedehogs used to run through the concertina wire because it was harder for the snakes and other critters to get them there.

Hi Jessie! Wonderful video as usual! (ps I love sci-show talk show mostly because you are there with your amazing animals) I have a pet hedgehog and he is a wonderful little fellow, but I am concerned about bedding. He currently has the aspen bedding on his wheel and toilet side and carefresh on the other for lower dust when sleeping but sometimes he does get the shavings stuck in his penile sheath (not hard to remove but it is rather uncomfortable for him!) I am considering fleece as a liner for the cage but I am not sure as I want to encourage his natural digging and burrowing behaviour as well. The carefresh is nice so far but the only draw back is the price vs volume in the long run. My hedgehog (Charlie) has a very large cage to accommodate his needs after all. Any advice or insight is very appreciated! From a fan! -Cassandra

The bit about porcupines shooting quills is a myth too.
I don't think it is. See the video with Kemosabe, where the vet visits them. When she's distressed she does shoot quills at them.
Edit: A little research, I guess, I'm wrong. They don't "shoot" them. But they are detachable. Sorry about that. My bad. ;)
These videos are very interesting! Although it's probably a common request, do you think you will do a What, Where, and How on domestic cats? The information is very helpful, especially in regards to diet and habitat.

You forgot the part where they like to dig and poop all over their wheel which means both the wheel & their poopy paws need to be cleaned regularly! ....and yet I love them.
Switch them to Mazuri like she mentions. Does wonders for the poop factor and digestion overrall.

My mom had a hedgehog and she let it roam around the house because it was only 1 floor. She had a cat too, and the cat got pricked and never attacked again.

How do you get him to eat greens? I have had four and they are pretty resistant to anything other than carnivore based foods (though I have had some luck with sweet potatoes , pumpkin and some fruit sparingly.....

Just out of curiousity, what sort of weights of food to you feed hedgehogs? I know there is probably an equation to work out what weight of hedgehog needs what weight of food, but I haven't seen one for them.
There is hedgehog food you can buy but it's super unhealthy. Hedgehogs do best on a special mix of dry cat food supplemented by mealworms and produce.
Can you do a what,when,and how about budgies? If you already did one can you give me the link? I am thinking about getting a budgie and before I ask my mom I am trying to do all of my research I can. If anyone knows about budgie care plz reply because I need all the information I can get.
My cat was sitting next to me and when the hedgehog hissed he was terrified! I had to rewind the video and show him it was just a hedgehog so that he would calm down, I think he thought there was another cat in the house at first haha.
Also my cat is a hunting machine, he brings back rats, voles, mice, birds, (and once even a rabbit) all the time, I feel bad for the rodent population because he really must be decimating it. We already have a bell on his collar and keep him inside at night but it doesn't help, he can go outside and come back with a dead animal in minutes. Anyway I was wondering if you have any tips to try and prevent him hunting as often
The only sure way is to keep him indoors at all times. Although, since he's already an outside cat, that wouldn't be a good idea.
Hello, I could not find the answer when I searched. If melatonin helps us sleep at night, what is the equivalent of nocturnal animals that they process in their body to be able to sleep during the day? Maybe its different for them? Maybe they have or they produce something in their body during the day that keeps them awake?
I have a pet hedgehog she's really sweet but she has a little bit of sass and really hate nail clip time I have lost her a couple of times cuz they really fast when you're not looking
Great video, Jessi! A few things from my experiences as a former hedgehog owner as well...
First of all, you were right on saying they don't make very good "pets" in the traditional sense, and I think that's important to note. That doesn't mean the right person wouldn't love owning one but they have to understand that they involve a lot of work and there is very little "reward"-- in other words, if you own a hedgehog, don't expect it to play with you or even really want to be around you. You essentially just get to provide for it and observe it, which is certainly rewarding in it's own way. But people wanting to get a hedgehog shouldn't trick themselves into thinking they're going to be best friends.
Secondly, in all my research I did prior to taking in my hedgehog, I read that it's best to house them in a cage that had bars going vertical as opposed to horizontal. I kept mine in a single-story ferret nation cage. This is because they will climb the side of the cage like a ladder but not know how to get down so just end up falling. I never had any personal experience with this since I didn't have horizontal bars but I see that Groucho's cage is like that so I was wondering if you could weigh in on this! Have you had any problems with that?
Also, I wish you'd touched on self-anointing! I think that's one of the most interesting things hedgehogs do. Just another reason why they are so amazing!
Bar climbing mostly comes from boredom. It is also common in hamsters. It is mostly just precautionary.

a hedgehog was drowning in our neighbors' pool, we rescued him and blow dried him. when we left him alone for a bit, he wandered off. chances aren't too good that he made it very far, but maybe, just maybe, he did...
