    My hedgehog smears poop on his spikes. He's like a walking Vietnam war jungle trap. He never pooped on me though, thank goodness! He also hates crocs for some reason. Doesn't mind any other footwear, bu as soon as he sees crocs, he attacks them, chews them and throws them around.
    He's a European hedgehog. I have him because I volunteer at the local wildlife rescue organization, and he came in at just 100g, severely dehydrated and covered in maggots inside and out. For some reason he never grew to full adult size, so he can't be released. He won't survive a winter long hibernation, so he stayed to become an educational hedgie.

    I have a hedgehog (Sigmar) and she is a little over a year old now. She is litter box trained (80% accuracy for all poops that are not on her wheel) and when I take her out for socializing and play time she is asked to poop (i.e. she is placed in her box and given a treat if she poops and/or pees which is approaching every time she is first pulled out during a day) in her box. I understand not every hog (or animal for that matter) is going to trainable like this, but it is possible! Also wet paper towel to her plastic wheel once a day and scrubbing it once a week seems to keep her under control on that front. =)
    There has been a big scare in some news groups about salmonella from hedgehogs. I've been bombarded over the last few weeks by family members with articles and news clips and now they are uncomfortable handling Sigmar. Yes, they can carry it, but like all animals you should wash your hands after handling them. Good hygiene is an important part of living with an any animal.

    • @littlecritter13
      @littlecritter13 Před 5 lety +7

      Reptiles carry salmonella as well. Drives me nuts that people dont research farther then that. Wash your hands and make sure you keep their enclosures clean. Its really not that scary

      @liamhalliday8437 Před 5 lety +11

      I think this is a great reply and I completely feel the same, and totally share your point about basic hygiene an salmonella. Our hog (Euclid) is the same regarding the wheel, which we place above his litter box. It's funny that when we clean his cage thoroughly he will actively poo outside of the litter box (we assume to mark territory or something) but otherwise is well trained.
      When we take him out I place in our bath, run the sink and the sound of the water makes him go. I shower down and wipe down the bath with a wipe and then he's good to go for hours. He then runs and burrows and "flattens" himself over my wife and I as he sees fit for a solid hour (longer if he falls asleep) and then we put him back. He works well around our work likewise, as we're both back typically after 20:00. We take him out everynight. . Interestingly also he uses me for running and play and my wife for tummy strokes and cuddles, mostly.
      He used to eat directly off our hands but now he likes, and lol@"expects", worms in his tube when we put him back in his cage. He always goes to the same tube and will look-up expectantly and sniff until worms are deposited in the usual place.
      I think hedgehogs require some work but they are unique, loveable, and heart-meltingly adorable little creatures, if they feel loved back.

    • @FireCatRich
      @FireCatRich Před 5 lety +7

      @@liamhalliday8437 Sigmar is very similar! I actually got a trick from a cat friend that seems to work for Sigmar. If I leave a little of her old litter and mix it with the new litter (like 10:1 new to old) she doesn't seem to have the urge to go on her nice clean bedding. The feline friend said this was something to do with 'maintaining the potty spot' but what ever the reason it seems to work for my girl. =3
      Still there is some poops that happen outside the box. I've noticed sometimes Sigmar steps into her litter box and once her front feet are in she just starts going. I can't really blame her for that. She is trying, the back end is just not making it all the way in her pan. xD

    I can’t imagine! We’ve had a cat with cerebral hypoplasia that we had to express her bladder and poop for the first few months of her life; in TX we rescued a ferret that would literally roll in her poop directly after depositing it (past abuse?). Our dobi/lab lost control of her bladder and bowels after she became paralyzed in her back end. We carried her around with a towel in front of her back legs for over a year until (at 18yrs) she told us it was time to let her go. I just can’t imagine needing to let an animal go because of poop issues. How awful for those poor folks and how wonderful y’all were able to rescue her!

He is the third I have owned over many years, and i have learned so much about each one and can tell you I had one girl who did the same thing with the poop on her wheel but only when she was "upset" with something like trying a new food. We've had our hedgehog for five years now (our 2nd passed away recently) and I'm always telling others how "clean" hedgehogs are. Our hedgehogs sleep in sleep sacks and have "never" pooped in them. They are housed in a large plastic container with a corner litter. Since they like to snuggle in the litter fluff, the don't poop there either. They only poop in one corner of the cage, which we pick up and flush every morning. They do poop on their running wheel, which we have to clean every morning. They also "do not" poop on us when we handle them. They do poop / pee if we let them walk around the house so we keep an eye on them. When the weather is nice, we take them outside and they do their business straight away. I would consider our hedgehogs, extremely clean pets and very easy to care for :)

    I ended up taking in my sister's 2 year old hedgie back in July and I loved the little brat soooo much. I tried everything to make her happy. Her cage was just like Tickles and she had spent most of her time sleeping so the first thing I did was let her stay in her play pen (obviously made sure she couldn't escape) but when it started getting cold, we had to find a large storage container and get her a heat lamp because she tried to hibernate. I played with her daily to actually get her used to human contact (it put from from 15% social to about 75% which was awesome because she wasn't as skiddish anymore) but the whole time I had her, she kept getting diarrhea. During her last month, that's all she ever did and it was nasty. Do not get me started on hedgehog farts because they are absolutely RANK! The whole situation was just so up and down and just so stressful trying to figure out what the cause was and in the end it didn't work and she passed in November. I would love to have another one but I know I shouldn't because they're just too much and now I'm paranoid. But they're sooooooo cute and precious. To those of you that have hedgies and can keep them safe and happy and healthy, I salute you. To those that want one, do about 2 months worth of straight research before doing ANYTHING. Ask dozens of owners, vets, everything. Learn everything you can. You don't want to walk into that sort if commitment blind.

    My hedgehog only pees in one spot, near her wheel. She poops all over her wheel and runs over it but her wheel does not shoot the poop around so that is a plus. I have to wash Ginger's poop-boots off when needed. I take her for night walks and it helps to reduce or eliminate poop in her wheel.

We have been considering getting a hedgehog in the next few years when my child is older (now 8) but are not ready for a second pet quite yet. Currently very dedicated to our Conure, who had jealousy issues with our past hamster, so still in the brain storming stage of considering a hedgie. Good to get and idea about what their daily maintenance care will be like..Wow, THAT is a lot of poop!
    IF (and this is a very big "if") we were to get one, we would have to dedicate the spare room to it. Away from our bird, and have enough space for an adequate and large enough enclosure. In MI we would have to get a permit for a hedgie anyway, so we will see how life goes. Such a sassy cutie! Glad she ended up at Animal Wonders with your family :)

    I don't know if the owners story was true, that they 'rescued' her on craigslist from someone who only had her for a week. I wouldn't be surprised if they bought her at a pet store not realizing how much she would poop, then wanted to get rid of her by the next day.

    Fun fact: I'm allergic to hedgehogs. I'm not allergic to any other animal I've touched, but I react immediately when I touch hedgehogs. Guess what animal Pottermore decided my patronus is :P

    That cage was almost too small for a carrier. It is hard to imagine a hedgehog being happy in that thing.

      It's hard to imagine anything being happy in there. I wish pet stores would stop telling people those cages are big enough.

    I have two hedgehogs and I had two before them and none of my girls smear poop on themselves. Maybe I am just lucky. My first two hedgehogs did not even poop on their wheels. They had poop corners where they took care of business. My new ones do poop on their wheel but they only get poop feet and it’s never that bad. It’s just a little. Hedgehogs are weird but that’s part of the reason I love them.

    This is why no matter what pet, or touch, you should always wash your hands before you eat/make food

    Can you give us (The hedgehog friends) more content on Tickles? Maybe some Enrichment you use for her or tips and tricks? What are hedgehogs, where are they from etc. Like you do with your other animals?

    They also chew on things like dead toads and creasote (if they are allowed to anyway) and then anoint themselves with it. I love hedgies dearly, but probably not as a pet. I'll stick to my hedgie plushies. (of which I have many :P )

    Does Tickle get along with Prickle?

    • @animalwondersmontana

      They were housed separately and in separate areas while Tickles went through quarantine. After that, we never introduced them. Hedgehogs aren't a social species, so they don't need companions and will likely become stressed out if they have to share a space with another.
