100% the men’s gymnastics is hilarious. I was an athlete care nurse at Sydney and was courtside for gymnastics and Roy and HGs commentary was a stand out highlight!
Roy and HG have worked together since the 1980's. They both love sport, but are also brilliant improvisers. Generations of Australians grew up with the hilarious commentary provided by Roy & HG on many sports. I remember the commentary on Curling, making a usually dull game, edge of the seat exciting. One on the best bits is they're ability to make up stories, rules and phrases about a sport on the spot. Brilliant! 😂😂🎉🎉🎉
One of the most brilliant things they'd always do at every state of origin game, or the football grand finals, was to play that country song that the boxer Lionel Rose released in 1969 entitled 'I Thank You', when the TV telecast was playing the national anthem. As the TV camera moved along the players faces, it appeared they were intensely getting into this obscure country song. In this context, the lyrics of the song were hilarious.
The brilliance of these two is underrated , Roy might lead with a totally obscure and outrageous commentary and then hand off to HG and HG will pick up without skipping a beat. It's both masterful and hilarious
These legends still go on today. It was daily throughout Sydney 2000 and The Ice Dream at the winter games after. 2 hours a night , players would all be desperate to get on the show as guests. The nrl coverage was classic, they don't do it anymore, because digital TV made it too difficult to time the tv commentary with fm radio which they were on . They'd watch the TV broadcast and rip into presenters as well, they had little nicknames for most players . But they only did rugby league State of Origin and nrl and afl grand finals. They still do a podcast every Saturday called " Bludging on the blindside " , it's on Sydney abc radio so has a leaning to Sydney but quite broad really. Well worth listening to.
They were always trying to crack each other up, and make the other one lose his control live on camera. That, and their delivery style, just made it perfect.
As a 66yr old woman with virtually no interest in sports, especially football, I love to listen to bludging on the blindside! Have no idea who the players are, or what they look like, but through listening to Roy and HG I get mental images and totally crack up!
Roy and H G are magnificent and did commentary in the height of their career on ice skating, gymnastics, the State of Origin in NRL, - they made everything so much fun. I only really watched the State of Origin because of them. National treasures.
The commentary that shot them into the mainstream eye was the Men's gymnastics. Especially the men's Parallel bars event. Inventing official moves like the "Pardon me boys"
Do the clip about the Japanese synchronised swimming team "...every performance tells a story... this story tells of the Japanese love of the whale... the Minke whale..."
Roy n HG used to commentate the rugby league through one of the radio stations so we would turn the tv volume down and the radio up, they were so much more entertaining to listen to than the tv commentators.
I recommend you find them doing the 2000 Olympics, they had guests (like US athletes) queuing up to go on live during the games as well as highlights of the day's events! 😂👍
Yeah, I remember her on their show saying they were the best thing at the games, because they reminded everyone that sport is meant to be fun, not just all about sponsorship.
The boys started out with a radio program called This Sporting Life which lampooned just about every sport known to man...and some women...then a television show called Club Buggery in which sport stars and identities willingly subjected themselves to merciless pisstaking. The Dream (with their Olympic "mascot" Fatso the wombat) was a nightly highlight of the Sydney Olympics with new terms being coined for various athletic pursuits, particularly in floor gymnastics.
Yes mate they bounced off each other so well, Roy would lead HG into another rabbit hole and then HG would take a different tangent all together it was a scream. Glad your reminding us all of what a great year 2000 was and how we welcomed the world so well. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖💖💖

Roy Slaven is the ultimate Australian sportsman turned commentator. He has represented Australia internationally cricket, rugby league, rugby union, shooting, pig sticking, badminton, tiddlywinks and many more sports too numerous to mention. A sportsman of his calibre will never be seen again. HG Nelson is the numero uno sports commentator in the world. He is the commentator's commentator. His knowledge of any and all sport is encyclopedic and eccentric, and perhaps even a little erotic. Together they are a powerhouse in sports commentary. They started the reign of the radio airwaves on 'This Sporting LIfe' and transitioned to TV with such classics as 'The Dream ', The Ice Dream' and of course the unforgettable ' Club Buggery' We will not see their likes again.
Top Aussie humour. Rampaging Roy Slaven was also in the 2001 series 'Changi' which was interesting. My neighbour was a survivor of Changi and John Doyle would visit him, I'm not sure if it was for research or genuine Aussie friendship. Sadly my neighbour's house ended up as a hydroponic marijuana house, rest in peace beautiful man.
Well before the Olympics, Roy and HG had a show on the ABC called Club Buggery. All their work is brilliant but for an appetiser watch Roy and HG - the French. Some references are dated now but it a great example of their reparte'
They actually commentate on ALL sports. The people mentioning the NRL and rugby mention that because thats the sports those people follow. I love their AFL commentaries. The soccer world cup commentary was ‘the midnight run’ show (because of the time differences). The soccer commentaries are funny because they like to take lots of sly digs at how boring soccer is. If you want a really funny one, try the women’s rhythmic gymnastics. Hilarious. I still have no idea what a gymnastic ‘battered sav’ is (in reality its a sausage with batter you used to be able to buy from fish and chips shops). The diving was always good for a laugh too. They’ve even done commentary on the tour de france (lots of discussions about the most useful drugs for that one).
TMK they haven’t done the World Game. I’m not sure that it offers enough material TBF. HG is from South Australia where Aussie rules is played and he went to the big smoke in Sydney and met Roy who taught him about rugger. From the start the comedy duo laid the rule that HG asked the questions and Roy answered and they were never in dispute. What a formula! But that meant Rugby took first place. Remember Roy recalling his triumphs in a number of other sports including many track & field events as well as on the racetrack - trainer/owner/jockey. And HG was a great race caller come the Melbourne Cup. At their height they had a high class variety show called Club Buggery.
Watching this again is such a treat. If you really want a great laugh, watch the Womens Floor and Rythmic commentaries, they are so good. Top Video mate.
One election They even had Roy and HG commentate the election counting. And it was SO much more interesting than the other channels dry political commentary
Checkout the one on the 100 metres race being 99 metres or whatever it/was. Ironically the women’s vault WAS the wrong height, the little women were falling like skittles.
I remember a different commentary for the wrestling. They used the phrase .. ,, and he's assuming the position,, .. a few times . The American athletes on panel were in stitches . I believe they went flavour of the month in USA after the Olympics and did some stuff there .
They've been on the radio for nearly 40 years, and like you said it can seem like a real sports analyst talk show rather than comedy if you are just listening peripherally without paying attention, but the comedy is actually very very funny and very high level. Much better than their TV stuff IMO, which was still funny, but to an extent kind of dumbed down. Their characters tend to make light of something very very serious, like some heinous crime comitted by a footballer and they'll just be like "oh come on, boys will be boys", and then some minor thing like a golfer's ball not being cleaned properly and they'll go on and on with grim sincerity about what a travesty of justice it is. Once you get the vibe they are legitimately some of the best comedy ever, but they don't pander to the audience or make it easy. I think a good percentage of their fans aren't even necessarily really in on the joke sometimes. If you're really interested they still have a podcast that comes out weekly called "Bludging on the blindside" which you can listen to on most podcast platforms. They start slow with HG rambling on with sports news but then Roy comes in with his bizarre takes after about 15 minutes and it gets really funny.
The mens gymnastics is a complete crack up

Nothing has made me more proud to be Australian than this representation of our humour 😢

How's ya father. ;)
Any football grand final, you muted the TV and put on the JJJ commentary. Roy and HG at the card table.
The synchronised swimming is really funny... but even more hilarious with their commentary😂
The mens floor routine !!! I could not stop crying with laughter
Flatbag..flatbag..straight into a hello boys! And a battered sav!
The brilliance of these two is underrated , Roy might lead with a totally obscure and outrageous commentary and then hand off to HG and HG will pick up without skipping a beat. It's both masterful and hilarious
As has been said below. You must see Roy 'n' HG's commentary on the Olympic gymnastics at Sydney... brilliant.
Their dry delivery of the comedy lines is the best - I think it's what really sells it to the point of laughter 😆
YES! more Roy n HG!!! 👍
In the 90’s I used to listen to Roy and HG on the radio with earplugs at AFL grand final - brilliant
These legends still go on today. It was daily throughout Sydney 2000 and The Ice Dream at the winter games after.

definitely I'd suggested that as well, it was so hilarious
They were always trying to crack each other up, and make the other one lose his control live on camera. That, and their delivery style, just made it perfect.
Their State of Origin calls were Legendary!
During State of Origin, a lot of people would mute the TV commentary and put on JJJ to listen to Roy and HG.
The gymnastics commentary is by far funnier!
these two are legends, they try and make the other laugh as their way to "win"
Soo good, the men's gymnastics is absolutely the best!
Totally taking the piss man
As a 66yr old woman with virtually no interest in sports, especially football, I love to listen to bludging on the blindside! Have no idea who the players are, or what they look like, but through listening to Roy and HG I get mental images and totally crack up!
I used to listen to them on the radio & they could waffle on for hours. I'd be in hysterics 😂
Roy and H G are magnificent and did commentary in the height of their career on ice skating, gymnastics, the State of Origin in NRL, - they made everything so much fun. I only really watched the State of Origin because of them. National treasures.
The gymnastics!! "Dutch wink, and into the flat bag..."
I had forgotten how funny they are. That was great. I hope you do more. I vote the commentary on the gymnastics.
Thank you, great to relive that time!!
The commentary that shot them into the mainstream eye was the Men's gymnastics. Especially the men's Parallel bars event. Inventing official moves like the "Pardon me boys"
I can't wait for you to discover the battered sav.
I remember when during a cutaway to an ad break, they showed the wrestling with Barry White as a soundtrack
Do the clip about the Japanese synchronised swimming team "...every performance tells a story... this story tells of the Japanese love of the whale... the Minke whale..."

Australians do satire, very well. Roy and HG have always taken it to another level.
Good memories 😊
Worked next to them at a Sydney radio station ... they were always cracking each other up. So much fun on-air and off.

Roy and HG did similar show for Rugby World cup in 2003 held in Australia
The good old battered sav. Hello boys. Bring on the gymnastics
23 years on they do a radio show
"BLUDGING ON TH E BLIND SIDE"
Football NRL.
It only gets better.
LUV IT
When they used to commentary on radio of the state of origin series Rugby league I turned down the tv and listened to them doing the match. 😂
I think I recall that Billie Jean King asked for copies of the series - VHS videos no less - because she loved it so much
Yeah, I remember her on their show saying they were the best thing at the games,

I discovered them on ABC's "Blah Blah Blah" (Hosted by Andrew Denton) .. Thats late 80's for those that weren't born.......

Full name " Fatso the fat arsed wombat".
I always wanted one of their home abattoir kids, and an Ian Roberts Date Finger bar iirc.
Doing the dog!😂😂😂
The Dream, pairs ice skating and the "cop that".
I liked there Rugby quip, "Crouching Dragon, hidden finger" regarding the sledging antics of one particular player.
Roy and HG doing the gymnastics at the Sydney Olympics is the best 😆
What a bunch of porkchops lol Love Roy & HG.
They also used to commentate the rugby world cup and the rugby league state of origin. Pretty funny...
They also did some Melbourne cup horse racing calls😂
Their comms on Gymnastics is much funnier
I worked on the railway during the Olympics so most of the shows I watched were on The Dream. Roy and HG Nelson were the sound of the Sydney Olympics.
Simply the best duo ❤👌👌✌️
If you want to learn more, there's a decent 30 minute doco on CZcams called 'Roy and HG: The chemistry behind Australia's enduring comedy act'.
SOOO much to catch up on for "new Australians!!" The Brick with Eyes.for example. I still enjoy Bludging on the Blind Side to this day!
Roy and HG are still doing a sports show on ABC radio every Saturday from midday till 2pm called 'Bludging on the Blindside".
