I have such a hard time comparing! I loved Arches’ Devil’s Garden Primitive Loop, Half Dome, Rainier’s Skyline Trail and Angels Landing hikes. There definitely needs to be different categories for all! I would like to do the Narrows from the top down like you. We only got to do a couple miles with the rest of population! Thank you for showing us and all the effort you put into your videos. I’m sure you hike more miles getting in all the views for us.

My hubby and I hiked The Narrows early June last year in the other direction you took - yes, VERY busy! One of our favorite hikes so far in the lower 48 is the Highline Trail to Granite Park Chalet in Glacier National Park (the East side was closed at the time due to COVID). We also loved Peekaboo Loop in Bryce Canyon, the hike and rock scramble to Butch Cassidy's Arch in Capitol Reef, the hikes to Alberta Falls and the lakes beyond and starting at Glacier Gorge Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park, and hiking amonst the red rocks around Sedona, AZ to Devil's Bridge.

I did the top down 36 years ago. Took 2 days. Stayed overnight in the grotto, an alcove about twice the size of the one you filmed. Had deer walk past as we were boiling water for dinner. I found Big Springs amazing. It was the best hike of my life. I also did Angels Landing that same trip. At 64 I am working to get back in shape because there are lots of hikes I have yet to do.

Thank you for this. You and I are of a similar mind when it comes to being alone on a hike, so I am glad to see your experience, but may not try this one myself. My favorites in National Parks have been Upper Muley Twist Canyon in Capitol Reef (lots of arches, great views over 8 miles, and never saw another person), Druid Arch in Canyonlands, and hiking up into Cedar Breaks from outside the park. In Grand Staircase, I greatly enjoyed going to Broken Bow Arch (again, never saw anyone else). The loop in Natural Bridges is also wonderful, especially if you know where to look for the hidden ruins and rock art that the NPS doesn't advertise. I very much appreciate your videos; they are giving me lots of good ideas for my next trip.

these old people hiked the paved trail to the entrance of the narrows (we are in our 80s) and the down side was the enormous crowds. However, the beauty of Zion is incredible and it was a special treat to see you in a place where we had stood and looked and wished we were younger and more fit and could go on. So delighted to follow you down from the top! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The narrows was so amazing. Renting the boots from the store and bringing our own trekking poles made a HUGE difference. The ankle support from the boots and having both trekking poles allowed us to move so much faster than the crowds and get deep into the canyon away from everyone and spend much more time there. It was incredible. Dont be a dupe and pay for a broomstick! Two trek piles will save you.

    • @SUVRVing

I've not hiked the Narrows. I admit that the risk of flash flooding gives me pause, and I noticed the wear of waterlines on the canyon walls at about the level of your hat. I don't have your level of fitness or experience, but I hiked Zion's Angel's Landing four years ago at age 54. It was strenuous, daunting, and exhilarating, and I'm so glad I pushed through--the 360 view of the canyon and river from the final platform is breathtaking and worth every ache and groan. I learned that I'm not bothered by heights and that it was important to be always cognizant of my footing and center of balance. If a chain was present, I had a death grip on it. That said, I admit that the short sections where no chain was possible gave me the biggest rush--there I felt freest and most fully connected to this wonder of nature. On the way down, at the sharp curve under the overhang, a very strong wind swept through, almost knocking me off my feet and into the cliff face. It lasted 2-3 minutes, and I hoped anyone up on the fin's edge had a good grip on a chain, a very scary place to get stuck.
A new video on SUV RVing has become the much-anticipated kick-off to my Saturdays. Many thanks, Tristan.

I did the through hike solo in Sept 2011’. The shuttles couldn’t make it to the trailhead due to the roads being too muddy. I decided to hike the last 15 miles to the trailhead anyways & literally had the top half of the canyon to myself. Didn’t see another hiker until about 11am the next day! Definitely my most memorable hike ever!

Very enjoyable! I appreciate that you do alot of "normal" exploration, hikes, etc. You travel much the way I did in my 30s and still try to when I can now. Practical, seeing "toursity" stuff if it's along the way, seeking solitude where you can but not avoiding stuff that you want to see just because there are other people. It's actually interesting and strange to see you hike in such a crowd, with all the chatter in the background and you looking a wee bit tense and ill at ease. So vastly different from watching you move through vast empty deserts, or scrambling up remote, obscure land formations without another human around for miles and miles. It adds to the great variety in your videos and makes them some of the best on CZcams, Tristan. Thanks so much for including this one. It's a gem.

Definitely one of the best hikes in the U. S. I was able to do it as a bottom up day hike in 2008 before the NPS closed the Zion road to cars. I was in the canyon at the crack of dawn and had it to myself all the way to the turnaround. Lots of people in the canyon as I made my way down canyon. You are right about it being a totally different (and much better) experience when you have the canyon to yourself. Half Dome compares to it as does Mt. Katahdin via the Knife Edge in Maine. Those would be my top three hikes in the U. S.

I really enjoyed the video! Thanks! I always wondered about a top down hike. Shuttle, difficulty, campsites, permits.
My bottom up four mile hike in April was great. Early shuttle and brisk hiking allowed me to get ahead of most people. Pants were waist high and I brought in water at that pool. I fell over once and my staff started to float away. I was impressed with how the wet foot Canyoneering Boots conformed to the river bed. The hike made for a top 10 day for me but I liked the Half Dome hike much more. Very fun and unique!
I think using a bicycle to begin bottom up hike at dawn would be a good plan. I forget stuff too!

One day you will look back on all of these epic adventures and be so very glad you did what you did. That was a fabulous hike. So beautiful! I was a day in and out hiker on that paved trail once. I sure missed a lot! You put so much work into going back for you camera. I can't even imagine. LOL

I love just about any hike in the eastern sierras. Also on a gorgeous clear day, any hike in mt rainier national park. Though not necessarily a day hike, Goat Rocks and Knifes edge is pretty spectacular. Hiking the sisters wilderness in Oregon is pretty incredible too.

Thank you for bringing us along. Utah never disappoints. Out of the nine hours how much of that would you estimate was backtracking for the camera ?

  • @asadventures_moriicoddiwomple

We're glad you did this one from the top down. We did it from the Riverside walk for a few miles up and loved it. We've camped in Zion in two seasons, the first week of June and the first week of January. The fall looks like a great time to go too. Such a beautiful canyon!

Fantastic scenery. Thanks for taking us along. I also love to be by myself in nature and am happy to trade a 10/10 hike with tons of people for a 7/10 hike with no crowds.

Your videos get better and better. Section 8, a day hike in Colorado Springs, is my favorite. About 6 miles but absolutely fantastic with great views and lots of elevation gain. J

That’s a hike I always wanted to experience. We use to camp in Zion when I was a little kid in the 1950s. When I went back as an older adult memories didn’t match up with reality. Not many people and no shuttles back then. Still love it though! Thanks for taking me there Tristan! I appreciate all your efforts to bring us your wonderful videos! God bless you and your family!

Excellent video. I felt like I was there. Love the sensory immersion including the audio with the water echoing. I would add as another great day hike the South Kaibab down and the Bright Angel Trail back up in the GC.
