Look, as a member of the SNP I gotta say I understand your frustration, but we can't do that! First off it would simply lead to the same situation Catalonia is in, with our leaders being sent to prison. Secondly, if somehow this undemocratic secession from the UK was successful then we would be an unrecognised state, so we couldn't enter NATO, the EU, or form trade deals. Thirdly, there is a concept identified by political theorist and sociologist Max Weber called 'legal-rational'. This concept basically means that the legitimacy of a government comes from its basis in the law, and so if that government does not abide by that law, then in the eyes of the masses, it is illegitimate.
So yea, I understand your annoyance, but these legal cul-de-sacs are necessary to create a stable, prosperous independent Scotland.

@@alisdairmclean8605 The reason the 2014 referendum was legal is because Westminster gave temporary powers to the Scottish government to hold the referendum. They are refusing to do so now, which is why we are going to the supreme court.
By the way, I respect you for supporting independence essentially from day one, and I really hate to sound rude, but have you had your head in the sand or something? The SNP have already announced that there will be a referendum for independence next year if the supreme court rules that we have the power to do so. And if it rules the other way, then the next general election will be treated as a de facto referendum. This means that if the majority of Scots vote for pro-independence parties like the Greens, SNP or ALBA then we will have a mandate to declare independence.
To put it in simple terms, the SNP IS pursuing independence, so I would strongly advise you to continue supporting the SNP as they have done so much for both the independence movement and for Scotland. (Also the ALBA party is just a bunch of wackos.)

While I don't agree with his party or their politics, full credit to him for coming across coherently. He isn't rude, he doesn't resort to the typical sensationalist, laddish and smug jeering that so many other Tories do when confronted with difficult questions.

@@_stitch yeah, the Tories often try to make us feel grateful for things they say they have done when in reality they are probably claiming the credit for something they haven't done themselves. The whole system need a serious shake up. People are struggling, really stressed & worried and our politicians are still arse-ing about, throwing childish jeers across at each other across parliament. It's pathetic mate. We need calm, steady, sensible leadership to get us back on track as a Country.

Liz Truss is in office but not in power. Most MPs will be dreading a phone from her, not because they’ve done anything wrong, they just don’t fancy being Chancellor this week. She currently has the authority and gravitas of a post it note on a sandwich in communal fridge.

1:49 when I see people like this I fear for an independent Scotland. I am 100% certain that if Scotland becomes independent that within a couple of Scottish elections a group of super-rich, corrupt and detached from reality ex-Tory MPs will be in charge using the same tactics they use here in England. Divide and conquer and fear-mongering.
I grew up in Scotland and England and my family is a mix of Scottish, Welsh and English so from England I support Scotland staying but if I still lived in Scotland I would vote SNP because they are leftist. In fact, it's disappointing I can't vote them in, in England too as mad as that sounds. That said I think the left (not Labour) in Scotland can maintain power for longer and achieve more as part of the UK than if they get independence and the above scenario plays out.

That is why independence is just a start, and could be good or bad depending if the people organise amongst themselves against exploitation from the rich.

You say you worry for and independent Scotland but what you describe is exactly what we have now in the UK. The Tories are already putting steps in place to reduce the powers of the Scottish parliament and would remove it altogether if they thought they could get away with it. Devolution is no protection and against UK governments that wish to remove the devolved parliaments.
I grew up in England and have lived in Scotland for nearly 10 years but I can clearly see they many issues that Scotland suffers through being part of the UK. It took some time but as the years went by I couldn't reconcile the policies that could be in place with those that are imposed on Scotland from Westminster. Spending hundreds of millions every year to mitigate cruel tory policies could be better used to invest and build Scotlands economy in a way that suites the people of Scotland, not that of the city of London.
Scotland already has client media for the tories but still never votes them in, at least with an independent Scotland we can embed a fair voting system in, making it far harder for these things to happen. At the moment we have funding directly linked to the UK government spending in England. If this government push through their cuts then Scotland suddenly gets a lot less money despite not making that decision. Having to wait for the actions of another government before you can plan financially is no way to run an economy, Scotland can do far better than this current farce when independent.
