Elliott Smith - KALI THE DESTROYER [hypothetical album, 2022] (

- Elliott Smith has so much incredibly beautiful unreleased material out there, or material that was unofficially released as part of the Grand Mal, or material that barely entered public consciousness via b-sides, and I've had this odd desire for a while to arrange some of my favorite tracks into a hypothetical final album. If such an album existed, what would it sound like? What would the title be? What would be the cover art?
For this hypothetical album, I've chosen the name 'KALI THE DESTROYER', which seemed such a natural choice that it was almost obvious. I like to imagine that at this stage in Elliott's career, he would have been dealing more openly with the traumas of his past (as in songs like "Abused") while also finding the healing to find something close to solace, love, peace, or, at least, mere rest in his maturity ("Place Pigalle" maybe?). But ineluctable is Elliott's awareness of the effects that his music has had on the people who listen to it, and their consequent expectations ("Suicide Machine"). These are just some of the thoughts I had while arranging the tracks; and, bearing these themes in mind, the name 'KALI THE DESTROYER' just felt especially fitting. With all this said, I want to be the first to point out that not all of these songs are ones that were recorded near the end of Elliott's life--nonetheless, I think that all these songs together still would make a banger of an album.
For the cover art, I chose this portrait of Elliott Smith that I discovered through the Elliott Smith Gallery group on Facebook. I'm not sure at the moment who originally captured this photo, so please let me know if you happen to know that photographer's name so that I can credit them. I'll research more in the meantime.

Great track listing. Grand Mal has so many amazing songs.
Why were these never released? How did you get them?
@@JohnnySheridan217 so some of these apparently were released as B-sides (I think 2 of the songs from this album), but the rest can be found through other means. If you haven't already done so, search for the "Grand Mal" compilation album-it's an ongoing project to collect Elliott Smith rarities into a single album and it's a gold mine :)

Man, I truly think if Elliott would’ve had time to lay vocals down for “See You in Heaven” it would’ve been one of his best songs ever. Maybe even “Ms. Misery” big. Also thank you for making this album. He’s my biggest influence of all time hands down but every once in awhile I’ll take a break from his music just to stay up to date with the alt-country/americana scene. This past time of coming back I’ve heard quite a few songs I’d never heard previously. Mostly from this album so big big ass thank you, brethren. You’re doing God’s work!
He would build a whole fucking city up just to highlight the flower in the center. Ive never known better.
Elliott is the most underrated musical artist of the last fifty years - his output of incredible music is extraordinarily- his posthumously released recordings alone are greater than the vast majority of top selling and well known artists - I have a very humble respect for his work.
he is the greatest songwriter of his generation. Maybe any generation.
@@ikeajohnyeah maybe expect bob GOAT dylan
Maybe underrated in terms of popular recognition in the media, but his influence on indie/alt pop/rock is arguably greater than any other artist in the past 50 years. So many popular artists cite Elliott as an inspiration for them.
i can so easily see him as an old man still writing and performing. he was melancholy, but didn't strike me as a doomed person.
Elliott just gets to me in a completely different way from other music, it feels like a personal connection
So true
i really miss the music that Elliott would have made in the future
The gods envy us.
It makes my heart hurt to think about it as I often have.
It is sad how the majority of his music still remains unreleased
He wrote countless songs what has been released officially is such a small percentage of his entire output
Yes. At the same time he released five solo records in his seven year career. Plus one well-regarded posthumous album. And you are likely aware of the excellent "New Moon" compilation which contains all unreleased songs. Cheers.
@@herbertrichard614 yep got all but one of his records all are fantastic the only thing I'm missing is the heaven adores you soundtrack
But even with all that has been made available there is still tons of unreleased material
I forget how many songs exactly are on the grand mal rarities but from my recollection there was at least 6 cds worth of music I think Elliott was at the very least one of the greatest songwriters ever and certainly deserves to have his entire recorded output released particularly for physical media
Just my opinion of course
his mixed picking and strumming style is so beautiful. It makes a nice texture
Especially the way it can be used between piano and forte. Really spices a composition up and gives it emotion. Super happy I caught the habit of doing that when learning his songs in my teenage years.
Growing up in Michigan and surviving winter after winter which seemed to stretch for years this guy was paramount and quintessential to the parsed sunshine, melding into gray.
Grew up in Florida, the opposite is just as bad. Sweating balls all year, no seasons just blinding heat n sunlight. The hurricanes were a relief.
I'm from Portland but living in Michigan and Elliott always reminds me of home
One of the best albums Elliott ever made and it wasn’t ever officially made into an album. So sad! I would buy the vinyl if I could. Such a testament to how underrated he was. RIP KING
I know it's been said before, but I am consistently amazed that the stuff he didn't think was ready or worthy of release blows away so much of the dreck that the industry craps out.
Absolutely! His demos alone are just on another tier.
100%
A lot of it, like Suicide Machine, were meant to be on From a Basement on the Hill, but were omitted by Smith's family and friends on the actual release of the album.
@@merilynne1548 to make space for Ostriches and Chirping and a song from 1996 lol
Maybe he thought they sounded like other songs hes released so he ommited them in order to keep all of his albums diverse and always evolving 👍
we miss you, elliott. every day.
I feel like this should be an actual record, I really do.
I feel like I can speak for anyone here listening to this when I say that I'd buy this in a second.
yeah it actully a very good piece i wonder how this game to be and not be release for its quauty is something else.
"If such an album existed, what would it sound like? What would the title be? What would be the cover art?"
Thank-you for putting this part in.. I'm keen to take a listen. Good on you for following a passionate idea and keeping his legacy going. Though this is a fan-made mixtape, you have gone the extra level in showing your inner ES geek to the world with prowess so I'll accept the idea of faux-album when listening and be grateful that.
Thanks so much for your comment, Adrian! I do hope you like the album. I put some thought into the songs/order, but it certainly could have been done better.
This man created the best songs overall when it comes to musical composition and lyrics and still isn’t as popular as he should be. We as fans have to make more people aware of his work.
Beautiful idea. I love his lyrics and he’s one of the few people I’ve never met and still miss.
I met him a few times back in Portland when my band recorded at fabulous jackpot studios . He was so ,so nice and just like whatever . Though this was the time when we used to go see him play in front of 12 people
@@scottgarvey669 thank you for sharing that. I’m sure he was a decent person and I’m happy you had the chance to meet him.
Wish he was still with us!
Thank you, this is so fu**in' good... and I'm glad I didn't know any of these songs. Sometimes I realize I'll never hear a new ES song and it hurts like hell, but today I feel like I have cheated death.
Genuinely such a cool project. Well put together, nothing but greatness. I love this
How can so much good music come from one man?
Right?!
It is so much better to bear the weight that existence sometimes is with the company Elliot´s compositions. This man did so much for us, I will forever be grateful.
I normally hate fan comp albums but this is a fantastic selection of songs that flows together really well. Good job!
Excellent collection, just when you think you’ve heard em all, a few gems pop out of nowhere.
Elliott has so much unreleased material out there its mindblowing, his official releases are just the tip of the iceberg, and thank god for this because he left such a void for all of us that its a bless to have all this, this selection is great, cheers man!
Right. Elliott recorded pretty much everything he wrote. That is from the age of 13. Similar to Vincent van Gogh, Smith worked right to the end of his life. Thanks, old buddy.
Wish he was still with us!
Elliott will never cease to put a tear in my eye, and a smile on my face.
Dude, this is incredible. Thank you.
this guy was in his own category and every song on here has at least one thing about it that makes the songwriter in me say holy shit that's genius and if you don't agree I'm sorry you have to go through life unable to see all the colors there are because this stuff is rainbows for your ears, son.
Good collection, i feel like he wouldnt have put abused up front, a living will i think #1 and then maybe place pigalle, so open up tempo, then romantic and more reflective probably, then more upbeat again but self deprecating like stickman would be a good opening order. Dancing on the highway halfway through to suggest a transition, then more personal songs like abused, close maybe with see you in heaven - i would have loved to know how he would have ordered the songs on basement, such a big part of his music i think was the sequence of songs and shifting mood in his albums. Every time i listen to basement i feel a slight regret also that this is unlikely how he would have sequenced it. Though i think opening with coast to coast was perfect, song rocks but also has a very disturbing quality, i think that is appropriate for how he was those final years
Can't tell you how much i love to see fellow fans put these things together, just a lot of people out there who won't let him be forgotten, i really feel a lot of joy about that
Also if i can make a suggestion add 'confusion' to the hypothetical mix. Such a great song, only elliott would doubt it to include in an album
'Stained glass eyes' as well, love the collection though
he's an artist that is there when no one else can be ♥️ thanks for this
It's hard not to resist wondering what a next album would have been like and I like the thought you gave it here. I have two critiques. One is the lack of his "noise songs". Those were truly representative of the direction he was going musically. He was listening to MBV and making some heavier denser music. Or at least more open, layered. I agree the lyrics might have gotten more direct in some ways. Based on Basement though, I think they could also become more surreal and harshly realistic at the same time. I'm thinking of the kind of things he says in Kings Crossing. A little of both there. Who knows!? Oh yeah, the other thing is I can't handle this picture for so long.
Hey im curious... what songs of his are "noisy"? I guess coast to coast comes to mind but if he has more noisy stuff I wanna hear it!
@@teddyrieck1758 ^^^^ elliott smith shoegaze???? yes fucking please !!!
@@ddude1212 In my opinion, From a Basement on a Hill would've sounded drastically different if he had been alive to finish it.
@@teddyrieck1758 "Don't Go Down" from On A Basement comes to mind. I am curious to know if he really was listening to MBV - is there a source on that?
@@alexmiller Yes! You could read the book "Torment Saint: The life of Elliott Smith". When he was recording From a Basement on a Hill, he was listening Shoegaze music.
Yooooooooooooo thanks dude!! What an awesome find! Love from Amsterdam!
never headr this guys before. OMG OMG OMG
Okay.... This guy... LoL..
There is another guy who a lot of people like too.. Not really my thing but you should maybe check him out. His name is Jesus.
How many of his songs are still new to me.. They keep apprearing like old friends. Just wonderful
"Suicide Machine" really fleshed out his Harrisonian progression aping and is such a tragically ebullient and misinterpreted denial of the caricature his less articulate critics painted him to be
IMO his other unflinchingly Harrisonian of Harrisongs is "Fond Farewell", to name one
Once I figure out what the heck you said I might feel some way about it.
@Lou sorry, m8. Lol I had just gotten my Adderall script right before I typed that :D
I've been binging alot of his unreleased songs and just. How is almost everything this man writes so banger?
This is a great compilation !
Just when I thought i’d head them all. Thanks for sharing.
I know right? I love it!!! czcams.com/video/R-rpE3gQBHM/video.html
Bold move this, it's obviously impossible to predict a future that sadly never was, but I appreciate both your bravery in trying and the fact 40+k people took the time to listen. I never forgot the music this man made and I'm forever glad his legacy is still going in so many shapes and forms.
Brand new game is fucking amazing 👏 🙌 👌 😍
thank you
There're so many stories to string together from Grand Mal. Thanks for sharing your own vision of how it could've gone! Goes without saying but he left us far too young.
He is so beautiful inside and out.
Thank you for doing this
Beautiful work. Thank you!
Thank you so much ! It is amazing !
thank you 🙌🖤
I discovered Elliott by accident. A DJ was talking about the song Late by Ben Folds and mentioned the 'mean guitar player' was ES. Curious, I bought a copy of Figure 8 and was immediately hooked. I agree with above comment that he created brilliant material comparable with the The Beatles, but he sang from such raw honesty that you've got to say he compares favourably to even the FabFour. Discovering Grand Mal was such a treat - Mr Goodmorning - a classic.
I discovered him on purpose. I was like, "Today I'm going to discover Elliott Smith." And the rest is history.
So wonderful thanks ❤
This is beautiful!
This is simply amazing. Thanks
thanks for putting this together
Very nice! good on you for making this compilation.
This dude has passion that’s rarely in music and I love it
Thanks for posting this. It's breathe of fresh air
This is wonderful
I like it. Thank you
Thank you for this …
this is beautiful
GENIUS...THIS IS!
Brand New Game is an all-timer for me.
I would dare posit that you're probably not a. ...
(Looks around mischievously)
...
...first-timer....? XD
thank you so very much for this, I didn't even know I needed it
Just wonderful.
this compilation is amazing
thank you so much for collecting these songs! I had no idea these existed until today
cool dude, thanks for curating this
what an artist, amazing
Finding this video has made my day, and quiet frankly my month
I'd never heard about half of these so thanks for making!
Man it's a good compilation but "From A Basement..." has my favorite DEFINITELY Elliott SMITH track, "Ostrich and Chirping"🔥
it sounds so good cranked in surround. The whistling harmonics are genius. I usually just loop it all day.... But jokes aside, I really love the way that fades into Twilight... All this crazy, old fashioned drums and whistling and.. chirping.. fades out to silence... the crickets, and then maybe one of his most pretty songs. Elliott's songs can be called lots of different things, but when it comes to "pretty.", specifically.. Twilight has to take the cake. I Didn't Understand and the Last Hour honourable mentions.
You're right. Ostrich and Chirping is the best song he ever wrote.
@Church of Film we were joking, but thanks for the info.
@Church of Film lol I dont know who david mcconnell is
wow. just wow. thanks whoever did this, it's like a new record from a place I only ever hoped for
These are pretty much the same songs I would have put together as well. Very nice! Thanks for doing this!!!
Thanks for uploading these. I haven't heard these in about 10-15 years. I dug a lot back then to find everything I could that he released. Dudes music brought me through some rough times. Love em.
Thank you for this comp... Some of my favs here.
You're quite welcome, glad you enjoyed, Matt!
This is superb artistic work! I think I shall be listening to this album many times over. It would be great to see also a video where you show the artistic development of your work.
Thank you fren
Thank you for bringing some new(to me at least) tunes from my boy. Consistently good material).
This is incredibly significant to me
Nice video dude love it n.n
keep up
This is nice
The title's dope asf and the songs are great, I really wish he was still around and always wonder what his future albums would've been like
This is great! ‘Nuff Said
Dancing on the Highway is one of my least liked ES songs, but Place Pigalle is in my top five! Thanks for taking the time to put this together and share it, Sfigato.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Place Pigalle is such a beautiful song, I thought it might be the best way to end the album.
Dang but it's one of my favorites, well hell I love them all, especially the early version of bottle.up and explode
I cant imagine there being anything not to like! Its a lot better than some songs he did release IMO
Oh man, that’s one of my favorites. Have you heard the version that doesn’t have the guitar loop from Figure 8 playing over the whole song? I prefer it, because it’s easier to hear the melody and differentiate the parts of the track.
@@ParleyPCat I'm going to have to hunt for that.
ive listened to this over and over and over, i love it so much. the order and composition is perfect. thank u for making it
I’m so happy you’re happy with this!!
I like your hypothetical album name, good one.
I love it
He is missed! How we need genius like his now, especially now! Forever ❤
great pics man thx im so old and listened to so many old bootlegs with the released so i tend to forget which is which
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Great work. I was signed by BMG back in the day, and saw Elliott for free about five times. Was at a party in LA a long time ago, and the host played me the studio version of Sorry My Mistake. It was quite like Independence Day. Amazing. It exists!
see you in heaven is like a bg music of a practicing safe job techniques video in a factory before the quiz.
THIS is a living will
Oh god, I love In the Lost and Found. Beautiful album :)
His most uplifting ❤️ ✨️ ♥️ 💖 💕 💙
Beauty 💕💕 😢
yes this is spot on. I can't believe how good the first song is no matter how many times I hear it.
well done.
excellent
Amo muito essas músicas 💨
🤩Excellent!!!! 😎 Big like!!!!!🤩
Oh my god I am going to devour this whole. In a good way tbc lol.
This is brilliant! I was vaguely aware of him, but never listened much...
Welcome to the rest of Your Life. Elliott is the best of friends and he won't ever leave your side. I promise.
Taking a fall is my favourite
this guy wrote alot of songs
this is really beautiful. the name chosen is still fascinating to me... For instance, I think Elliott Smith occasionally used and played with Hindu imagery ("Shiva opens her arms now..." in "Son of Sam" for example). Well chosen. :)
I thought the same!
