I saw Elliott on the Figure Eight Tour at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville. He was playing there with the full band. I remember he said he was sick and you could tell he was kinda under the weather up there under the lights. Shortly before they got on stage a GIGANTIC thunderstorm hit out of nowhere and you could just hear it outside sounding like the fucking roof was gonna cave in. Then all the electricity went out, and the place was in complete darkness. They just sat out candles all along the bar, and a few up by the stage. The other guys just sat down and Elliott pulled up a chair on stage by himself with his acoustic, and I think maybe a security guy shone a flashlight on him or something. It was like he flipped a switch and the flu lost its hold on him. He just started doing his thing and everyone had to be very quiet to hear him with no microphone or anything, and the storm crashing down overhead. I had never seen anything like that, and he really pulled off a fucking cool-ass performance in the dark. It was such an eerie and amazing scenario, and that's how I'll always remember Elliott Smith.

My god he was so incredible. I miss him without ever knowing him. The way he quits playing when he gets distracted or fucks up.... I love him.

Yup. That quirk or whatever is a huge part of what I love about Elliott... like if my life/work/personal relationship/whatever was on public display? I always think of how many aborted attempts at doing - anything at all there are in my daily life, you know? It's all much less difficult than anything Elliot is doing. Like my aborted attempt to clean my apartment and watch Elliot instead. It's Friday afternoon, fuck my apartment.

I love the thumbs down people. I just cannot see an Elliott Smith fan ever thumbing down for any of his stuff, live or studio recorded. They must have stumbled across him and not liked him. Very odd.

Often times the thumbs down is a way to indicate to the algorithm what you don't want to pop up in your feed, or autoplay selections.
Perhaps these folks were looking to hear the studio record version from the albums, and kept getting full live shows, (often with several of the same songs overlapping each set list.) It could have absolutely nothing to do with their feelings about his music. 🤷♂️
Think in terms of very early Facebook; you could click [like] for a post, but not [sad] or [angry] or other emotive indicators. So you'd get posts like "grandma died." And ppl would [like] the post, but it was just an acknowledgement of having read the bad news. Not expressing their joy of learning your G-ma passed away...

@@xplormusic8241 The building is still there but it has gone through a bunch of different names. It was the conservatory and then the Avalon Events Center for a while and now I think it's just called the Stone Building.

I saw him play a week after this in Chicago at the Lounge Ax and he fucked me up forever. It was the heaviest metal show I have ever witnessed. His power was his truth.

I agree. The way he carries himself and talks up there, even the setting with the table pulled up next to him holding his drinks and cigarette. To a random person walking in you'd think he was just a "local"-open-mic performer. But he was and will always be one of the best singer-songwriters this world will ever see. Such a sweet and amazing soul he was.
Those people maybe didn't realize it, but they were so lucky to witness a pure artist's concert. Wish I could have been there.

I’ve only ever seen Elliott perform with an acoustic standing up once, when he played Miss Misery at the award show. I wonder if his playing style is too difficult to play while standing up.
I saw him with quasi just a week or so after this. With quasi me thinks. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Anyone else wonder why Elliot's playing a guitar with just a makeshift aftermarket pickup? I get that he's into minimalism and a stripped-down barebones sound. But man it would sound a lot better if he had a nice guitar with built-in pickups where you could actually hear the notes. Just curious what other people think about the sound setup he's using in terms of instrument? I mean he sounds pretty good. But it just seems like it could be a lot better. Was that just his own preference?
He used a Lawrence A-300 and hated the sound of piezo pickups. He said once he liked the "glassy" sound of the Lawrence pickup and used it till the end of his life.
I love his sound of the Yamaha FG-180 and the Lawrence A-300 pickup:

Considering the mic used to record this show, it wouldn't make much a difference to us. He chose sounds that matched how he attacked the guitar to match his soft vocals, while still standing out. Some of the best acoustic guitar I've heard, is Elliott playing, with his cheap gear. I'm not sure different gear WOULD sound all that different.

HAVE SOME GODDAMN RESPECT FOR A SONGWRITER OF ELLIOTT'S CALIBER, AND *_SIT THE FUCK DOWN_* WHILE HE IS PLAYING PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
He says "are you guys bored?" Because roughly a half dozen ppl are walking through during his set, popping in and out from their seats (and these are just the ones our cameraman has caught from this 1 angle....) and earlier on you can pick up background conversation that doesn't settle when he starts playing. I feel like I saw him staring down various noisy sections, maybe not in a challenging way, but definitely a WTF guys I AM NOTICING YOU kinda look...perhaps I'm projecting. Either way;
