  • This video highlights the many sights in and around Mt Airy, NC (Mayberry), which is the hometown of Andy Griffith. We stayed at the Mayberry Motor Inn, and enjoyed the Andy Griffith Show themed stores and landmarks. Also, we hiked in Pilot Mountain State Park.

Maranatha! I am Toronto Canada. My wife and I enjoyed this video . We watched the whole thing on a peaceful Easter weekend morning (He is risen). Great video, thanks for sharing your experience! I’m a fan of the show, and actually live near Mt. Airy. Its where we “went to town” on Saturday when I was growing up. Russell Hyatt was a barber in the City Barber Shop next to Snappy’s, and cut my hair as a teenager. It was Russell that first started displaying Andy Griffith memorabilia in the barber shop. About three months later the trend went through town like a whirlwind, and everyone picked up on it. It revived the town from its loss of textile manufacturing, and breathed in a new life of tourism. No one is actually sure where Andy came up with the town name Mayberry for his show. Some think it may be a stretch of the name Mabry, which is an old mill house, now a tourist attraction itself, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. And close by it is a stream called Mayberry Creek. And by the way, the trail on Pilot Mountain is pronounced Jo-me-oh-kee.

There are SO many quotes from this show but ome of my favorites comes from the episode where Aunt Bea buys that miracle elixir that is basically alcohol and when they find it, Barney says "Where there's smoke, there's firewater." How he said it made it funnier.

On the Rance Howard trivia question: on the episode where Andy and Helen were on a getaway and Andy had to pay a fine for fishing without a license; Barney was convinced that they were eloping and had planned a party with Aunt Bea and Thelma Lou, inviting many in the town to go in on paying for the redoing of Andy's bedroom that would be more suitable for a new bride; Rance was in the group for the party at Andy's house. He remarked "Barney Fife, how could you!"

I never got to see it, but my brother stored it for him til my cousin could get it moved to Amarillo, Texas. I did see pictures of it back then. Well we had a Easter conversation the day after Easter and several of us remembered the worse candy ever. In the 60's ( I don't know if they made it through the 70's) there was a candy easter egg. They were beautiful to look at I suppose. Bright colors..especially the turquoise blue green one about half or two thirds the size of a real egg. The outside of the colored part was pure hardened icing type shell. The inside was the most sickening sweet gooey, but not marshmallow fondant type of white "stuff". One egg was enough sugar for a year. THAT was one if the worse candies ever! Remember that? They were however fun to decorate with and hide.

You are correct...TV shows back then, were FAR better than anything today. Back then, a show could be funny, and be clean, as well. Some producers today, don't understand that concept.
